Back in time

Artist: ELVIS COSTELLO
Born Declan Patrick MacManus, 67 years ago
Active: Since 1970 / 32 LPs

Anniversary album: IMPERIAL BEDROOM
Released: 2 July 1982 – 40 years ago today today

Rolling Stone said: “Elvis Costello’s Imperial Bedroom is really a mansion, each of whose rooms is decorated with painstaking care and detail by the artist. In every aspect of this masterfully wrought, conceptually audacious project, he’s managed to bulwark his emotional directness with vision and clarity — and to make an album that lingers and haunts long after the last note has died out. Like a long, episodic novel — or a long, episodic relationship, you
can look back when it’s over and measure how far you’ve traveled.”
Score: 4/5.

TUTV: 5-star singer-songwriter. 1st class album.

Amazing Album Artwork Of 5 LPs Turning 40 in 2022

Amazing artwork of 5 LPs released in 1982

1. Plastic Surgery Disasters by DEAD KENNEDYS

The black-and-white photograph titled ‘Hands’ was taken by Michael Wells. The photo depicts the emaciated forearm and hand of a malnourished Ugandan child in the palm
of a European missionary to highlight the horrors of famine in parts of the African continent during the 1970s and 80s.

2. PETER GABRIEL IV by PETER GABRIEL

Peter Gabriel: “The artwork on album four was something I’d been working on with a sculptor called Malcolm Poynter whose work I thought was really strong; he used to do these things out of very dark heads, and then figures made out of toys soldiers.”

TODAY’S YESTERDAY ALBUM – ‘Imperial Bedroom’ – 7th ELVIS COSTELLO LP…

Remarkable albums from the past…

‘Imperial Bedroom’
ELVIS COSTELLO
Released: 2 July 1982
7th longplayer

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Having gotten country out of his system with Almost Blue, Elvis
Costello returned to pop music with Imperial Bedroom — and it was pop in the classic,
‘Tin Pan Alley’ sense. Costello chose to hire Geoff Emerick, who engineered all of the Beatles’ most ambitious records, to produce Imperial Bedroom, which indicates what it sounds
like — it’s traditional pop with a post-Sgt. Pepper production. Essentially, the songs on
‘Imperial Bedroom’ are an extension of Costello’s jazz and pop infatuations on Trust.”
Score: 5/5 – Full review here.
