JAKE BUGG – When Tristesse Touches A Broken Heart…

MondayBlues

I saw young (still only 22) Nottingham troubadour JAKE BUGG playing at Rock Werchter Festival in Belgium last Thursday. Without a smile – as we know him – but with a devoted heart, an outstanding voice and moving stories. He’s a great songwriter and a captivating performer. And I like his ‘I don’t care what the critics say’ attitude. The highly talented loner is confident, honest and he already build a tremendous repertoire to be damn proud of. His most striking ballad is BROKEN from his self-titled 2012 debut album. He didn’t play it last week, but I want to hear it today and dedicate it to my very sick father. I hope he can survive and enjoy – even just a little bit – this summer without much pain. For you, dad…

I’ll wait here for you for I’m broken
Down, coming down this town
For my heart lies

Far and away where they took you down
Led them over to your house
Where I’m broken

Run to the lobby where I saw you try
Don’t give a damn for your reasons why
Why my heart beats for you

Have become all I lost
And all that I hoped for
But I must carry on
Always one never broken

Down by the people if they let you breathe
Don’t give a damn if you still can’t see
See I’m broken
Down in the valley where the church bells cry
I’ll lead them over to your eyes
I am one
I am one

Break a story of peace and love in a future
Bright sacrifice came around
Never broken

Down by the people if they let you breathe
Don’t give a damn if you still can’t see
Travellin’ a street that I did not know
Wheels like tong to the winter lope
Down in the valley where the church bells cry
I’ll lead them over to your eyes
I am one
I am one

Stellar Covers – JAKE BUGG goes JIMI HENDRIX…

CoverBlack

Not many artists covered guitar legend JIMI HENDRIX just because the man’s virtuosity
is matchless and frightens musicians to interpret one of his powered exploits. Except
for young British world troubadour JAKE BUGG. The quiet and highly talented songsmith isn’t afraid of playing songs of giants. He did Neil Young, Donovan and Johnny Cash amongst others with flare, respect and his own touch. He covers songwriters just because he loves their timeless classics. He don’t care about the purists who condemn his audacity and guts and who think that icons should only be admired and nothing more. I must admit myself that covering Hendrix was maybe a bridge to far. I thought wrong. His live rendition, a shortened version, of VOODOO CHILE is quite special. Get electrified…

classic with verve…

Donovan

This one’s for my dad
who is in great pain.
May he go in peace…

He’s five foot-two, and he’s six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
And he’s all of thirty-one, but he’s only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.

He’s a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn’t kill,
But he knows he always will,
Kill for me my friend and me for you.

And he’s fighting for Canada,
He’s fighting for France,
He’s fighting for the USA,
And he’s fighting for the Russians,
And he’s fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way.

And he’s fighting for democracy,
He’s fighting for the Reds,
He says it’s for the peace of all.
He’s the one who must decide,
Who’s to live and who’s to die,
But he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Labau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He’s the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can’t go on.

He’s the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can’t you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.
