BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Released His RAMONES Single ‘HUNGRY HEART’ Today 45 Yeasr Ago

THE BOSS earned his first Top-5 hit in the US with HUNGRY HEART.
The single was released this day 45 years ago, on 21 October 1980.

The song was part of his fifth album The River.

One day Springsteen met Joey Ramone in Asbury Park, New Jersey, who asked
him to write a song for the Ramones. He then composed ‘Hungry Heart‘, but
decided to keep it for himself on the advice of his producer and manager,
Jon Landau.

Previously, upbeat and catchy Springsteen songs such as ‘Blinded by the Light’,
‘Because the Night’,
and ‘Fire‘ had been given away and become hits for others,
and Landau preferred the trend not continue.

Too bad, I really would have known what
the Ramones would have done with
the song.

The title is drawn from a line in Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892)
famous poem Ulysses: “For always roaming with a hungry heart”.

“Everybody’s got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody’s got a h-h-hungry heart

Ramones’ (the band name was inspired by Paul McCartney, who would check into hotels under the alias Paul Ramon) hero/frontman JOEY RAMONE (real name: Jeffrey Ross Hyman) died after losing a long battle with lymphatic cancer, aged only 49. In 2023 a block of East 2nd Street in New York City was officially renamed Joey Ramone Place.

Happy B. TO JOEY RAMONE!

19 May 2019

The late Jeffrey Ross Hyman aka Joey Ramone was born on 19 May 1951 in Queens, New York. He would have turned 68 today. He was unquestionably my favorite Ramone. Some (wankers) just viewed him as a tall, long-haired nerd. I taught he was awesome, just being himself, no macho rock attitude (unlike Johnny and Dee Dee), great rose-colored shades, a natural voice, and most of all he talked and looked like a totally cool dude. Here are three big Joey moments to celebrate his birthday…

1. ‘Blitzkrieg Pop’ at the legendary London concert on 31 December 1977

2. ‘What A Wonderful World’ – fun cover, great Joey footage

3. December 2000 interview
