Press Info: This new LP takes aim at society, individuals, and the power of big tech, exposing the illusion of connection and the invasive grip of social media. Leg Puppy 2.0 pose the unsettling question: if nothing is real, what fills the shallow void but emptiness?
First, the bad news.
Leg Puppy: “Its my last album, as much I love making albums and calling out the bullshit in the world, its that very same bullshit that is limiting an audience for our art, only to be buried to an algorithm which favours stupid trending hooks and dumbness, hence check out the track ‘The Sheep of TikTok’.
I’ll still release singles but I cant keep going through that lead balloon moment on release day. I may change my mind, but right now I think 13 albums is more than enough material for people to discover or ignore.
TUTV:First World Problems isn’t really a 24-hour rave party record.
It’s conceived/constructed as the soundtrack for a yet-to-be-made Doomsday film.
Ambient muzak and techno bombast alternate seamlessly as sonic scenery
for the concept. Listening to First World Problems is like experiencing the EBM
version of The Dark Side Of The Moon. Leg Puppy‘s lyrical wittiness, hilarious
cynicism, and brain-breaking techno beats will be missed. Talking about a
big first world problem. Shine on you crazy puppy.
Pitchfork says:“They make weirdly danceable math-rock for muffled drums
and comically fretted microtonal guitar. Vol. II is a powerful argument that we
should all start seeing spots.
Album artwork
TUTV: I just discovered this sensational 2-piece via multiple reviews of their 2nd LP
on music websites. The first thing that attracted me was (of course) their wacky outfits, and I thought that this was just another kind of gimmick act making cheapjack music.
Not!
They move ‘n’ groove with a hair-raising and incessantly funk panache for 37 minutes, motorized by authoritative bass and drums firepower, while knife-edged guitar riffs
zigzag between the tireless rhythm section velocity.
At times, they sound as if bass-funk-punk legends Gang Of Four and Devo are on
mind-bending drugs. Except for some background screeches on the first 2 tracks,
the record is fully instrumental.
Vol.II is not an arty-farty experimental affair, rather an extraordinary and explosive sonic
tour de force. And, yes, for some inexplicable reason, their outfits fit the sonic turbulence. If you haven’t discovered them yet, this is your chance to do so.
Chloe Howard (frontwoman): “The album is about a night out, from start to finish.
As the night progresses, you’re having a great time, until your ex walks in with someone
else.
You hate the way you look but rather than going home, you press the big red button
and get even more drunk. Eventually, you take yourself home full of melancholy, chaos
and anger.”
TUTV: History has taught us that relationship breakups can cause great music. Maybe Not Tonight is one of those. This cathartic record is a bitchy, guitar-riffed
power-pop one.
Vocalist/songwriter Chloe Howard shoots sonic bullets from the hip at her ex.
I bet she can kill with her looks. She details the hate for the guy that dumped
her with clear-cut lyrics and clear-cut vocals. She doesn’t hold back. Nor do
the band. All burners on. Uppercut after uppercut. A spiky and jagged, but
also a punky-dancey affair.
Press info: “Johnny Moonshine is a poetic odyssey wrapped in restlessness, rebellion, love and loss. Chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring spirit of a small-town rebel, told through the lens of a close friend and narrator, the record follows the mythic arc of our anti-hero Moonshine — a backroad dreamer, moonshine runner, hopeless romantic, and overall tragic figure.”
Davis Black (vocals/guitar): “Johnny is a charismatic kid in a small town. He could really do anything he wants. But he runs moonshine in Choctaw, Oklahoma. There are epic dirt road parties.
Boy meets girl. Boy has dreams. Boy gets himself into trouble, then it may or may not go downhill from there, with moments of hope sprinkled in, because y’know, it’s not over ’til it’s over. Johnny Moonshine reminds me of a couple of friends from my small town who had incredible potential and lost it all.”
TUTV: You feel depressed? You need some comforting music to cry into
your beer to? I’m sure outlaw Johnny Moonshine can be your muse and
imaginary buddy.
Dirt Road Souls‘s melancholic sonority and their absorbing country rock and electric-powered folk-flavored wistfulness and affecting, ear-grabbing vocality are wrapped into heart-rending tunes, telling the story of an unfortunate desperado. Early Eagles nostalgia pops up now and then, but overall it’s heart-and-soul stirring Americana at its bluesy best. You’ll feel way better after a couplde of spins.
Press info: “Often labelled a musical chameleon, Jackson insists that most of his work belongs to his own “mainstream” – sophisticated pop songs with ever-shifting rhythms
and textures. After his playful detour with What A Racket! (a 2023 side project exploring early 20th-century British entertainment and music), he now returns to that core territory.
The result, according to Jackson, falls somewhere between Fool (2019), Laughter and
Lust (1991), and Night and Day (1982). Nine new songs in total – ranging from biting,
witty pop to moving ballads.”
TUTV: At the age of 71 and after an impressive 56-year career, Jackson has earned
lots of stars and stripes. This new LP will be another one to remember. The versatile
songsmith obviously wanted to have and make fun.
He returns to his swinging Latin-pop side with both jaunty and vigorous ballroom tunes: Welcome to Burning-By-Sea, I’m Not Sorry, Made God Laugh, Do Do Do, and Fabulous People (actually the first 5 tracks).
But with the closing quartet of songs, After All This Time, The Face, End Of The Pier, and See You In September, he leaves the cocktail party behind him and offers some good
old Jackson musings. It makes Hope and Fury an album with, sonically, 2 different
moods. I like the ebullient one the most, it smells like spring spirit.
TUTV: Wham Boom Wham Boom Bam! From the first chord on, you can stamp your feet, spin your head around, and punch your hands in the air. Lip Critic bop to the beastly beat, so does your itching body.
But as the track progresses, the funky ambiance gets ominous, aggressive, and brutal. Vocalist Bret Kaser goes nuts, the band goes bonkers, your stereo goes berserk, and
your ears go bananas. Hallelujah.
Band: TEMPLES Who: The glitzy British glam
rockers from London.
Track: JET STREAM HEART
Lead single from their forthcoming 5th full-length, the first
in 3 years, named Bliss. They will share it with the world
on June 26th.
TUTV: Frontman says James Bagshaw, the track sounds like Kylie Minogue
meets Daft Punk, meets Temples! My ears hear something a bit different,
more like good old T.Rex hanging out with Hot Chip at the disco. Most
important thing: T is back.
TUTV: Jumpy. Bouncy. Zippy. Cacophonic overtones, frolic organ blitz, sinewy vocals,
and psychobilly guitars drenched in an Eastern frenzy, blast out of your stereo. If this is what the Apocalypse will sound like, I wanna be there. Trust me, so will you.
“An energetic, confrontational track about power and the everyday things we tend
to take for granted. No preaching, but something we could all be a bit more aware of. Wouldn’t that be nice?”
TUTV: These Belgian motherrockers trigger your maddest pogo-stick moves and
your insatiable appetite for sweaty moshpits with this fervent flamethrower, fueled
by a bulldozing drum/bass artillery, schizophrenic guitars, and crackbrained vocals.
Consider it a privilege to be able to go out-of-your-mind to this punk dunk.
All together now, loud and proud, La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La-La.
TUTV: Fast forward from the kick-off with squeaky guitars, a cranky rhythm section,
and hurry-scurry vocals. Speedy punk Gonzales for all you sonic sprinters out there.
Band: VILLANELLE Who: Fresh Brit-rock trio led
by Liam Gallagher‘s son Gene.
New track: PLACEBO
Their 3rd one. It’ll feature on their
debut EP, which will land on May 6th.
TUTV: Placebo is a haywire riff wallop. Gene Gallagher doesn’t follow in
his father’s band footsteps. His motto is more like ‘tonight I’m a grunge star‘.
Yep, his band don’t look back in anger at the Nirvana days. They’re
definitely, maybe fans of Kurt Cobain‘s unpolished and unbridled
exuberance.
Band: JENNIFER TEFFT & THE STRANGE Who: A fired-up, energizing outfit who create earthy music
from its roots and breathes fresh, rock and roll life into them.
Tefft: “This song was written during a point in my relationship where I felt like it was
too one-way. Where I really wanted ‘A Little More’ from my significant other, communication, time, emotion, etc. – but I was afraid to say it out loud. I think it is a pretty common theme in relationships.”
Art by Stephen ‘Sharky’ Beccia; design by Jennifer Tefft
TUTV: If I tell you that riff-riveting blues rock duo The Kills are one of my all-time fav
bands, you’ll absolutely understand why I love this amazeballs crackerjack. Jennifer
Tefft voice matches Alison Mosshart‘s warm-blooded one. Both passional and sensual.
A Little More is a magnetic mid-tempo turn-on, energized by
a striking drum/bass artillery and sparked by anxious guitars.
Artist: PEACHES Who: The fabulous/controversial/notorious performer/producer and
feminist/gay activist born Merrill Nisker, 58 years ago in Toronto, Canada.
Artist: LEG PUPPY 2.0 Who: Seasoned techno freak from London who has released a ton
of longplayers (so far). Take a day off and move over to Spotify to
check out as many as possible.
TUTV: As my therapist once said: rich company owners are psychos. No morals,
no respect, no tolerance. Workers are tools abused to help them make even richer. Leg Puppy 2.0 translates this ongoing criminality into a brain-breaking midtempo techno club-hammer. It easily could be the theme song for George Orwell‘s yet-to-be-made
‘1984‘ movie.
Jacob Peck (frontman/lyricist): “ The song expresses our frustrations with
middle-class comforts, over-analysis without action, nimbyism, intellectual
cowardice as a stand-in for material change and all too easy deference to
business and power.
TUTV: These Manchester punk dropouts hit hard. All greedy sharks in
our collapsing society better run and hide. Hungry go on a roasting rampage,
powered by a propulsive bass/drum tandem, neurotic guitars, and cranked-up
vocals.
Band: MONT LOSER Who: A deformed creature born from the depths of a late-night Parisian haze, half kamikaze, half blood-drunk bat. ML invite you to dive headfirst into the void of a rock scene that always seems to rise from its ashes, when we sometimes wish it would stay dead.
Track: CONFESSIONAL
The title track from their upcoming
album, out on April 17th.
“It’s only reality tv confessionals — people alone in a booth, crying to
the camera, saying things they probably never meant to say out loud.”
TUTV: Ballistic guitars, chaotic screams, mindbending verve and head-twisting changes of speed combine for a roasting 5-minute rollercoaster. Be ready for a dizzying experience.
Band: GERECKI Who: Art rock ensemble from Serbia, known for blending 60s- and 70s-inspired
rock’n’roll with chamber-pop intimacy, subtle psychedelic hues, and jazz-inflected
textures.
Track: IT GETS DARK
New piece from their upcoming debut album, named Athanasios (Greek word for immortal), out May 7th.
The song draws from a quiet, deeply personal memory: a family visit to the zoo.
Seen through the eyes of a three-year-old daughter — curious, overwhelmed, moved to tears by the crocodile house, then distracted by ducks flying over seemingly empty cages.
TUTV: Gerecki produce a hook-hungry groove, reminiscent of The Beatles‘s classic Get Back jam. No kidding. That’s what my experienced ears (big Beatles fans) told me immediately. A-OK, right? Far and away. It Gets Dark thrives on it and repeats its infectious throb after slowing down here and there.
After the brutal killings, in cold blood, of two American citizens – Rennée Good
and Alex Pretti last month in Minnesota, several musicians called out Trump and
his ruthless Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
So did The Boss.
“I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it
to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of
Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent
immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.”
Band: KULA SHAKER
Who: British psych rock vets, fronted by charismatic
vocalist/songwriter Crispian Mills. Their 1996 debut LP,
titled K made them instant indie stars.
KAH: “I drew a man on his family farm wading across a river toward the final living pig, knowing he had to slaughter it. You can tell he doesn’t want to do this, but sometimes the
hard thing is exactly what must be done.”
TUTV: Arresting from the start. KAH’s puissant Americana voice and the song’s rock-solid Mellencamp flow merge seamlessly together, resulting in a stem-winding gem. Both electric and absorbing.
Verstegen: “As a songwriter, I have a love-hate relationship with the “blank page.”
As long as I don’t put anything on it, anything is still possible. It’s a promise of everything
song could ever be. But I also find that emptiness intimidating. What if I mess it up?
What if I have nothing meaningful to say?
That uncertainty and doubt reminded me of how I feel after a broken relationship.
You suddenly have to turn the page and write a new chapter. A head full of doubts
and a heart full of hope. And before I knew it, I had a page full of sentences about…
a blank page.”
TUTV: Dim the lights, sit down, relax, and let your thoughts run free. Verstegen will soundtrack it all with this new restful reverie. His near-whispering vocals and acoustic, sepia-colored sonority echo Matt Berninger‘s soft, romantic touch. Candelight music for relaxing moments.
Artist: RYAN THOMAS SMELLE Who: Canadian singer/songwriter with an acoustic approach to storytelling, using
hook-laden songs in the areas of folk, alternative, North Americana and pop.
RTS: “Some songs are stories of moments from our life. As a songwriter, this short
and sweet lyrical tale is a snapshot of a love’s farewell and how we can stew in the
feelings.”
TUTV: Vocally Ryan Thomas Smelle reminds me of The National’s Matt Berninger‘s tranquillising hush-hush timbre, which benefits the heartrending emotions and
the saddening nature of NothingLeft Of My Heart downright.
Acoustic and electric guitar sparks, think Mark Knopfler, paint cloudy images.
This is a melancholic reverie for silent pondering and soul-searching reflection.
A touching and moving ballad.
One of the 23 tracks performed by big-name bands/artists on a new album,
named Help, with all benefits going to War Child. An organisation that shapes
systems that protect and support the well-being of children affected by conflict.
Another batch of 5 new, stellar tracks are
added to Turn Up The Volume’s Jukebox.
All for your aural pleasure.

TRACK BY TRACK
Artist: LEG PUPPY 2.0 Who: Seasoned techno freak from London who has released a ton
of longplayers (so far). Take a day off and move over to Spotify to
check out as many as possible.
Press info: “It’s is a raw, heartfelt tale of ageism and fear. Set against a modern landscape of automation, algorithms & A.I., the story follows the quiet devastation of a loyal employee cast aside after 30 years of service. His decades of dedication are reduced to a final, hollow reward: A commemorative 30-year lanyard, symbolic of a system that no longer values human lives beyond their utility.”
TUTV: As my therapist once said: rich company owners are psychos. No morals,
no respect, no tolerance. Workers are tools abused to help them make even more rich. Leg Puppy 2.0 translates this ongoing criminality into a brain-breaking midtempo techno club-hammer. It easily could be the theme song for George Orwell‘s yet-to-be-made
‘1984‘ movie.
“Thirty years,
then told goodbye,
replaced by code,
he wants to die”
Band: STEREOLAB Who: Angelo-French electro-pop vets (1990–2009, 2019–present).
So far, they have released 11 LPs, with 2025’sInstant Holograms
On Film as the most recent one.
TUTV: On their last tour, they sold exclusively a 7″ vinyl single featuring two new
songs. They have put them online now so everyone can enjoy. Cloud Land is my
favorite. It’s a pretty swirling dance-oriented tune spiced with layers of synths.
Artist: FRED AGAIN… Who: Acclaimed English record producer, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist,
and DJ, born Frederick John Philip Gibson. He has recorded/released 4 albums so far.
Over the past few months, he has presented two songs/music videos under the banner “Brandon’s night out” featuring the nightlife adventures of actor Brandon Bendell.
Track: LIGHT BURN DIMMER.
The 3rd and final song of his ‘Brandon’s
Nights Out’ trilogy with Jamie T on vocals.
TUTV: Holy Moses! Fred and Jamie are on
a bubbling techno roll. Great pairing for
a big banger.
Band: WATERPISTOL Who: South Welsh indie squad who got together in late 2022. Combining the guitar textures of ‘90s shoegaze with golden age rock ‘n’ roll, they have been firmly set on embodying their influences in The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The La’s, and Liverpool
cult favourites Shack.
Track: FELIN
The song touches on the highs and lows of the creative process. The first
glimpse of a wider collection of material already taking shape behind the
scenes.
TUTV: Expect a jumpy indie guitar flurry, bouncing left and right, forth and
back. Felin is a full of vim-and-vigour pop tune invigorated by jangly guitars,
a tight drum/bass tandem, and reaching a climax every time the multi-voiced
chorus pops up.
Press info: “The song pushes deeper into Hillig’s emotional terrain, pairing alternative-country and indie rock with a writer’s instinct for metaphor, restraint, and uncomfortable honesty.”
Artist:LEG PUPPY 2.0 Who: Prolific boom-gloom
EBM act from London.
Track: ENERGY FLASH (034)
Title track from the brand-new 4-track EP
which you can stream here.
TUTV: Great news for all Oasis haters. Leg Puppy 2.0 will save you from the Gallaghers
mania with this giant wonderwall of techno lobotomy. It’ll feel like being at a revved up rave in a submarine while getting high on e-34. Supersonic shit guaranteed for all. Don’t look back in anger when the submarine gets torpedoed by the secret champagne supernova police.
Press info: “Codify depicts the gradual loss of self and identity; the control that we have over our own decisions, choices and lives ultimately. It speaks to how the sort of tech based society that we live in is not even hiding the fact that it’s manipulating and controlling representation
of ourselves and what we should find important so that our own autonomy is blatantly and unashamedly diminished.
TUTV: This techno maverick never lets your ears and your dark side of your mind down. No copy/paste for Leg Puppy. With this new ambient sci-fi hallucination – think Leftfield in slo-mo – he paints a pitch-black soundscape that drags you in his psyche and with poet MB’s hypnotizing spoken word performance Codify turns into a transfixing experience.
Codify,
Codify,

so I may not, I do not,

irrelevance, experiment,

you may crawl, through,
the intimate,
fought tongue hiding,

Unquestionable standout from the Irish indie
stars’ much applauded 4th LP Romance.
TUTV: Intense jam, rollin’ on with a bone-chilling flow and
frontman Grian Chatten raps all over it with his characteristic
uptight parlando and grasping for his breath every time the
refrain comes on.
Part of their upcoming 5-track EP
that’ll land early next year.
“Progress is a song about changing places, people and times.”
TUTV: Epic. Grandiose. Staggering. Amplified guitar-pop at its mind-blowing best.
One of those not-everyday puissant killer tracks overwhelms your emotions
from the first spin.
Piece from their forthcoming second longplayer, baptized Never Exhale. It’ll hit the streets on 25 January 2025.
TUTV: Taximan does your head in the way we, brainbangers, like it.
Bam Bang Boom. No mercy for the wicked. Manic mayhem as usual.
You’d better check out if Robert ‘Travis’ De Niro is behind the wheel
before taking a cab.
The song is about rediscovering old lovers after a night out from disco(theque) to disco(theque), with references to The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan and his excessive
drinking, and a legendary Belgian crooner.
TUTV: Full steam ahead from the get-go. All engines on. Decibels up, amps up.
The breakneck speed and the relentless synth/percussion riff make your head
spin 360°. I dare you to catch up with this missile all the way.
Band: LAMBRINI GIRLS Who: A two-motor punk bulldozer from Brighton, UK who have built
a notorious reputation over the past 2 years, on record and on stage.
Cut from the duo’s upcoming debut LP Who Let The Dogs Out. Out next year, on
January 10.
TUTV: Without a shadow of a loud doubt, one of the grrrlz’s best stormers so far.
An amazeballs wall-of-nasty-guitar/bass hullabaloo, a ruthless octopus drummer
and Phoebe‘s best vocals. Hell-tastic.
‘True love is nothing more than the wrong hill to die on”.
TUTV: The jaw-dropping vitality these volcanic Irish beatniks develop here is off the charts. They build a near-unbearable tension and explode insanely, time after time, along the rough ride. Vocalist/songwriter Karla Chubb knows terrifically well how to double your adrenalin production.
TUTV: Dog Dribble operates somewhere between Yard Act and Sleaford Mods.
Its limbs-activating groove is simply irresistible. Get up, stand up, and fight
for your right to bounce up and down like mad.
Band: FAT DOG Who:South London-based gang that made thousands
and ‘true love is nothing more than the wrong hill to die on”.
thousands of ears go bonkers with their first-rate debut
longplayer Woof.
TUTV: A ballistic disco-punk whopper to end and start all (il)legal
raves with. When the huge orchestral injections blast out of your
vibrating speakers you know that these misfits are your new
favorite dogs. Hallelujah!
One of the stellar singles from their
new, third, album Insight.
TUTV: Drums and bass team up for an incessantly beat that carries
this instantaneously infectiuos trip, along with a magnetizing Cure-esque guitar riff that gets you in a trance.
Truly hypnotizing from start to finish with velvety vocals
and darkwavish synths in the back adding a twilight tone.
TUTV: No, this is not a New Order song but it could easily be one, actually a stellar one. Summer Breeze sparkles from the very start to finish with scintillating guitar riffs, zealous percussion, shiny synths and Gibbard‘s eager vocals. It’s a pure pop pearl for all seasons.
Artists: ARROWS OF ATHENA (Boston, MA) Who: A pandemic project that found its two main players – multi-instrumentalist and producer Scott Lerner and vocalist and lyricist Jac-Lyn Gibson – reuniting after the latter spent some time away from music, Arrows of Athena are crafting a distinct sound on
their own terms, bridging usually disparate ends of the pop and rock spectrum for an illuminated sound of big dance beats, heavy riffs, and melodic intensity.
On this song the duo explores the mental and emotional work required
for a successful marriage, and how we’re often careless with love.
TUTV: I’m quite sure that Arrows Of Athena are huge fans of former Swedish glam and glitter pop duo Roxette. The bliss and blitz at play on Reckless Heart is sonically similar. Sizzling guitars, battering drums/bass grooves, sensuous vocals and a peppy chorus combine here for a power pop pearl that flames lustrously. Orchestral melodiousness, fiery 90s spirit, and musical. An invigorating joyride.
TUTV: This is a psychedelic shoegaze stunner, a multi-layered symphony
propelled by about a thousand guitars, a mindboggling bass riff, and combative
drums, while Rebecca Dow‘s ghostly vocals come from another galaxy.
TUTV: What’s in store for humankind. Nuclear war or peace and free love?
Or will we be just another brick in the wall? Whatever happens, never stop
pirouetting yourself dizzy to Leg Puppy.
We don’t need your education
We don’t need no your thought control
TUTV: The most energetic, exciting, pizzazy band around. Cooking on record and on stage. Sultry garage rock for party animals. This is my absolute favorite of this years Boomerang LP. Chipper tune.
TUTV: Think Cypress Hill fronted by Zack de la Rocha, rattling like
a rapid-fire riot-gun. An avid anthem that celebrates freedom and
invites you to shout along while pumping your fists in the air.
TUTV:Hallelujah rages against the anti-LGBTQ
haters with knives between their teeth and an
unstoppable drive.
“To express oneself, now expressly forbidden/ That’s a spiritual hell, that’s
a new prohibition/ And they’ll boil you down to reproductive function/ When
they see you as a vessel and not as a person!”
Track: Anna Save A Life
. TUTV: A manic motherrocker from a duo who sound as a 4-motor hit-and-run team. Riff-o-rama all the way while bashing drums do your head in. Garage punk ‘n’ roll at its filthy best. Call your own Anna and challenge the anti-decibels police.
TUTV: Wham bloody wham bam. Expect a sharp-splitting punk rock juggernaut. Amps up and full steam ahead. No rest for the wicked with this razor-blade cutting, head over heels bombshell spiced with sneering vocals. Wham bloody wah-wah guitars bam. Scrunched Up Fist hits your face really hard. Hurry-scurry stroke.
Band: SOFT SKIES INC Who: Philadelphia-based identical-twin duo and longtime musical confidants Ryan and Martin Rex, their shared sonic compass draws a straight line from the
classic alternative of their youth to the modern alternative and dream-pop of
today.
A song of hope, riding those tender waves of nostalgia, understanding that a loss of innocence comes with age but that we emerge from the other side with newfound perspective and awareness.
Melodic guitar pop at its Sebadoh best. Uptempo shoe-slacker-gaze
spiced with scintalling synths and ethereal vocals. Start dreaming in
overdrive.
TUTV: Just Like Everybody Else is a glorious, full-orchestrated pop gem, that transfers you in an eye/ear blink to a sonic dreamland with its affecting melodiousness, riveting chorus and warm-hearted vocals. Three highly-entertaining minutes and twenty seconds with Spielmann
Band: BABY SCHILLACI Who: Welsh alt-act producing a raw, unfiltered sound. Rooted in post-punk
and noise, the band’s aggressive yet intricately layered compositions evoke
comparisons to seminal acts like Mclusky, At the Drive-In, and Fugazi.
Track: BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA
From their upcoming debut album
‘The Soundtrack’ out next week.
A barbed slice of mayhew. Think Sonic Youth going forth
and back, and finishing with a flabbergasting finale.
Band: BLACK DOLDRUMS Who: British synth-pop-Goth trio, with key
members Kevin Gibbard and Sophie Landers.
Track: SUMMER BREEZE
Song from their their second longplayer In Limerence which lands on October 18.
No, this is not a New Order song but it could easily be one, actually a stellar one.
It’s a pure synth-pop pearl for all seasons. Uplifting, heart-warming, and gratifying.
The high-octane rock ‘n’ roll explosion tells the darkly humorous and gripping tale of a woman who has taken drastic measures against a deceitful lover. Noanne ventures into uncharted emotional territory, portraying a dramatic shift from dependence to outright animosity—and beyond.
Band: SOME REMAIN Who: Young punk gunslingers
from Ireland.
Track: DEATH DEFYING STUNTS
The first taken from an upcoming EP
slated for release early 2025.
Not only does it defy death, it pretty much defies description as it takes you on a glorious and wild ride through early UK punk (Read About Seymour – Swell Maps) and surf rock (Miserlou – Dick Dale) with some Dr Feelgood and The Cribs thrown in for good measure.
“A hectic party tune that leaves you feeling like you’ve
just landed a sick kickflip over a tank of sharks.”
CC have that uplifting drive of the Levellers and the eurythmic catchinesss of Mumford & Sons. Wash Away The Day is a brisk pop tune going forth and back, from
low-key to vivacious and back, while ardent harmonies and energetic violins complete
the swirling sonic picture.
Start dreaming in
overdrive. Right here.
Nicks: I wrote this song a few months after Roe v Wade was overturned. It seemed like overnight, people were saying ‘what can we, as a collective force, do about this…’ For me,
it was to write a song. It took a while because I was on the road. Then early one morning I was watching the news on TV and a certain newscaster said something that felt like she was talking to me ~ explaining what the loss of Roe v Wade would come to mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night.”
A vehement pro-reproductive rights anthem that
overwhelms on the chorus. Nicks‘s impressive voice
lights in the middle.
The first composition of the Goth icons’ upcoming 14th LP, their first
in 16 years, titled Songs Of A Lost World. It’ll drop on planet Earth on
November 1st.
Alone is an almost 7-minute funeral march, a slowly progressing lament, layered with mourning synths. Smith only starts singing halfway and augments the sombre atmosphere all the way through. After a couple of spins the songs keeps on coming back to haunt you. Sonic cure for restless minds.
Band: JOHNNY MARR AND THE HEALERS Who: Short-lived (2001-2004) Johnny Marr project
after he left The Smiths.
Track: THE WAY THAT IT WAS
Previoulsy unreleased song from the deluxe
reissue (released last week) of their one and
only album, named Boomslang.
A sweet 18-carat pop diamond with a melancholic resonance and impassioned
and affecting Marr vocals. No idea why this gripping reverie was hidden for so long,
but happy that my ears can enjoy it today. The Way That It Was wouldn’t have been
out of place on The Verve’s 1997 classic ‘Urban Hymns‘.
In order to not miss a beat Turn Up The Volume scans the musical
horizon daily (doing it for years now, actually) to stay in touch with
all new things sonically great and shares the results on a weekly
basis.

TRACK-BY-TRACK
Band: VERRA CRUZ Who: British trio who infuse their guitar-driven
sound with emotion, bravado and authentic
melancholy.
