The swirling 5-piece from Brooklyn led by charismatic frontwoman
Lydia Gammil released their 2nd album Package Pt. 2 last April.

Lead single Starting and Staring is a knockout.

Funkier than the B-52’s in their heyday, and they spin around
with more dash and class than Bodega and Parquet Courts.

Let’s roll.

2. ‘Mustang’ by KINGS OF LEON (Nashville, US)

The Nashville family launched their 9th album
named Cand We Please Have Fun’ last May.

Peak piece Mustang is a roasting steamroller that
turns up the heat even more when the cooking chorus
kicks in.

3. Ticking by SPRINTS (Ireland)

The flabbergasting energy these ear-splitting loud Irish beatniks develop on their ace debut LP Letter To Self is off the charts. The opener Ticking is what these 4 Irish indies
do on repeat. Building a near-unbearable tension and exploding insanely along the rough ride.

4. ‘U Should Not Be Doing That’ by AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS (Australia)

Since this Australian punk tornado released their 2nd
longplayer Comfort To Me back in 2021 they’re on an
endless tour around the globe.

Yet, in between all gig mayhem they found some time to write/record/release
two new searing sucker-punches with U Should Be Doing This as my favourite.

Amyl: ‘This song makes me laugh, but it’s also in a way poking fun at the shock that
people still feel at a little bit of skimpy clothing, and the bitchy high school way that
the music community still is.’

5. ‘Hallelujah’ by BAD MOVES (Washington D.C.)

Washington‘s flamboyant guitar pop quartet release
their 3rd LP, baptized Wearing Out The Refrain next
September.

On Hallelujah they rage against the anti-LGBTQ
machine with knives between their teeth and an
unstoppable drive.

“To express oneself, now expressly forbidden/ That’s a spiritual hell, that’s
a new prohibition/ And they’ll boil you down to reproductive function/ When
they see you as a vessel and not as a person!”

6. ‘Sink Ya Teeth’ by THE MYSTERINES (UK)

Sink Ya Teeth from their 2nd LP, named Afraid Of Tomorrows
which came out last month, is a a maddening master blaster.

7. ‘Body Of Mine’ by LAMBRINI GIRLS (Brighton, UK)

The feminist-punk duo went nuclear the past year following their
amazeballs 6-track EP You’re Welcome and this year’s bulldozing
and gender-themed missile Body Of Mine.

8. ‘Starburster’ by FONTAINES D.C. (Ireland)

Irish indie stars FONTAINES D.C. will share their 4th LP,
named ROMANCE with the world on August 23rd.

The lead single Starburster is a feverish corker
with a bone-chilling gush and frontman Grian
Chatten
rapping all over it with his characteristic
uptight parlando.

9. Danzig With Myself’ by THE DANDY WARHOLS (Portland)

Last March the Dandys came up with their 12th album, named Rockmaker.

Lead single Danzing With Myself features Pixies‘ general Frank Black and
is a gloomy and doomy groover. With its poignant progression, this piece
creeps under your skin in an eye/ear blink.

10. ‘Aeroplane’ by THE LIVING PINS (Austin, TX)

These two electrifying Amazons hit the bullseye with this
jagged jackhammer from their rawk-ing EP Let It Be So.

Imagine 60s British glam rock legends T. Rex and
American trash duo Royal Trux jamming together.

11. ‘Repeat After Me’ by RAPTUROUS (Kent, UK)

UK’s rock/hip-hop team Rapturous invite us to scream
our lungs out on their avid anthem that celebrates freedom.

“The song was inspired by the old blues style of call & response, we wanted to create something that could be easily sung back to us by the crowd. The song is about being free from anything that is getting you down, be it your job, finances, the world, or the weekend’s football scores. Freedom from misery, that’s the idea.”

Think Cypress Hill fronted by Zack de la Rocha,
rattling like a rapid-fire riot-gun.

Fat Dog are coming up faster than an out-of-control comet.

These bloodhounds are working on their debut LP.
One of the shared tracks (so far) is this disco-punk
axe.

13. ‘Oh Shit’ by THE LIBERTINES (UK)

British infamous mavericks dropped their 4th album
called All Quiet On The Eastern Esplanade last April.

Oh Shit was one of the singles. A shit-along crackerjack sung by
Carl Barât and joined on the chirpy chorus by his buddy Doherty.

Oh fun.

14. ‘A Foretold Ecstasy’ by MAYFLOWER MADAME (Norway)

This Norwegian band specializes in a dark and distinctive blend
of post-punk, shoegaze and psych-noir. So far they released two
albums.

On this new, superb single drums and bass team up for an
incessantly beat that carries this instantaneously sticking ride,
along with a magnetizing Cure-esque guitar riff that gets you in
a trance.

Truly hypnotizing from start to finish with velvety vocals
and darkwavish synths in the back adding a twilight tone.

Top-tier tune.

15. ‘Lights Down Low’ by DIE SEXUAL (Los Angeles)

This hepped-up EBM duo conjure their influences of EBM, techno and electropop,
their sound is an intoxicating mix of analog synthetics and seductive vocals, touching
on themes of desire and despair, domination and submission.

They have a new 3-track EP, titled Inservio out, with opener Lights Down Low
as my favorite. An electro booster with a mindblowing techno beat à la The Prodigy
that rotates irresistibly, non-stop.

16. ‘Big Time Nothing’ by ST. VINCENT (Oklahoma)

Glamorous songstress St. Vincent delivered
her 7th LP All Born Screaming last April.

High-spot cut Big Time Nothing is a 24-carat
pumping dancefloor knockout.

Party time.

17. ‘S o f t e r by VIRGINS (Ireland)

This Belfast-based shoegaze team made an impact on my ears
last April, with their notable debut LP nothing hurt and anything
was beautiful

Lead single Softer is a psychedelic shoegaze stunner, a multi-layered symphony
propelled by about a thousand guitars, a mindboggling bass riff, and combative
drums, while Rebecca Dow‘s ghostly vocals scrape the sky. A  titanic thrill.

18. ‘Peace Sign’ by RIDE (UK)

The shoegaze veterans scored an excellent
opus with their 7th LP, named Interplay

The album’s first single Peace Sign
is a sickly sticky pop earworm with
an orgasmic chorus.

19. ‘I Don’t Understand What Any Of You Are Doing’ by DEAD ANYWAY (UK)

This British duo combine the dark lyricism of Kate Arnold
against the music and soundscapes of Marc Symonds.
They caught my attention with last February‘s top album
Partially Eaten By Animals.

Highlight ‘I Don’t Understand What Any Of You Are Doing’ dives into trip-hop-pop territory with Arnold‘s crystal clear voice floating all over shiny synth dynamics. Catchy as hell.

20. ‘Welcome Tou Your New Future’ by LEG PUPPY 2.0 (London, UK)

This madcap techno act scored their best (so far)
album with Humanity 2.0 which came out last May.

You can shake your (p)elvis to single Welcome To Your New
Future
while getting nervous about the unknown tomorrow.

What’s in store for humankind. Nuclear war or peace and free love?
Or will we be just another brick in the wall? Whatever happens,
never stop pirouetting yourself dizzy to manic music .

21. ‘Just Like Everybody Else’ by SPIELMANN (Leeds, UK)

This cut features on Spielmann‘s new, splendid
EP, titled Fifteen Minutes With Spielmann

Just Like Everybody Else is a glorious, full-orchestrated pop gem, that transfers you in an eye/ear blink to a sonic dreamland with its affecting melodiousness, riveting chorus and warm-hearted vocals. Three highly-entertaining minutes and twenty seconds with Spielmann

22. ‘Just Another Rainbow’ by LIAM GALLAGHER & JOHN SQUIRE (UK)

New star tandem Gallagher-Squire produced/released their debut LP last March.

The lead-single Just Another Rainbow is partly Oasis, partly Stone Roses.
Liam sings like Liam (who else?) and Squire does his psychedelic 6-string
Stone Roses thing.

Infectious lads rock.

23. ‘Close Enough’ by STRESS DOLLS (Buffalo, NY)

Stress Dolls is the musical moniker of songstress Chelsea O’Donnell.
Last May she released her enchanting debut album Queen Of No.

Close Enough is one of my favorite tracks. A captivating pop song.
Tantalizing tunefulness, glistening guitar sparks, and gratifying vocals
combine for a top tune.

24. ‘Red’ by YOKOPHONO (Finland)

This is how British blues rock titans Royal Blood would sound if their
producer is a fanatic post-punk fan. Red is a riff-rough stormer.

The crude combination of hammering drums, stoner rock electricity,
and firm vocals create a shocking effect. Yokophono is a RED-hot 2-piece.

Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have canned album number 18.
It’s baptized Wild God and will show up on August 30.

The title track is a sublime composition. The first part is crooner Cave as we know him,
but quickly the vocal passion and goosebumps intensity go up and from halfway on, this diamond turns into an orchestral masterpiece, with a zealous hallelujah choir and an opera-like majesty.

Best piece they wrote in years. Breathtaking.

LEG PUPPY 2.0 – London’s Techno Act Gets Away With Bullshit

London‘s techno act LEG PUPPY 2.0 must be the hardest working one in EBM land.

Last May they released their umpteenth album in a very short timespan. It’s titled Humanity 2.0. Their best so far, thematically and sonically. You can read TUTV’s
review here.

And they already have a new statement to share with us.

The late genial pop-art artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) had a
pretty sharp vision on art: “Art is what you can get away with.”

LP 2.0 take the quote a step further now, and made a song
about it, titled ARTISTS GETTING AWAY WITH BULLSHIT.

So, if logic works here then ART = BULLSHIT.
And that is what Warhol actually meant, I guess.

And it sounds like this.

5 BEST ALBUMS OF THE MONTH – MAY 2024

Artist: BETH GIBBONS
Who: The voice/face of renowned British trip-hop outfit
Portishead who released (only) 3 LPs between 1994
and 2008.

Album: LIVES OUTGROWN

Gibbons about the album: “I realised what life was like with no hope. And that was
a sadness I’d never felt. Before, I had the ability to change my future, but when you’re
up against your body, you can’t make it do something it doesn’t want to do. People
started dying.

TUTV: Gibbons processes her pains of loss on this shadowy solo debut.
She still has that ghostly vocal vulnerability, as if she wanders, in slo-mo,
in a thick fog far away from the real world, to to get away from her
harming demons.

Musically, the tone is both delicate and tender, mysterious and introspective, with an overall sense of disturbing catharsis, accompanied by mourning strings, big drums and acoustic melancholia. You need several spins to connect with Gibbons‘ enigmatic world, but in the end, the result is truly affecting.

Two months ago renowned noise rock producer STEVE ALBINI
announced a new LP with his band SHELLAC, titled TO ALL TRAINS.
Their 6th and first in 10 years.

Unfortunately, Albini couldn’t experience its release (May 17)
as the fatal news came in, on May 7, of his passing following
a heart attack.

It wasn’t really certain if the release would go ahead or not. But here it is,
featuring his long-time, faithful friends/musicians Bob Weston (bass) and
drummer Todd Trainer.

The recordings already started in 2017 featuring several songs
the band used to play live for quite some time by then.

TUTV: It’s vintage Shellac/Steve Albini with its fractured song structures, its capricious and minimalistic resonance, its broken riffs, edgy hooks, sinewy drumming, Albini‘s poignant vocals and the raw and rough post-punk dynamics at play. Absolutely weird to listen to
it, with the incredible knowledge that Albini is no more.

The album closes with the ominous track I Don’t Fear Hell, including these lines
“I don’t fear hell. Their baseball team is undefeated. If there’s a heaven, I hope they’re
having fun. ‘Cause if there’s a hell, I’m gonna know everyone.”
Sounds quite bizarre and macabre at this very moment. Maybe, just maybe, Albini is happy, wherever he might
be. Rest in peace.

Who: 4 noise junkies
from Belgium

Album: FEAR IS A FUNNY THING, NOW SMILE LIKE A BABY

Info: “FIAFTNSLABB is not only an ode to celebrating naivety, the record is

that opts for simplicity and a wide color palette.

The maddening man in the middle, mental vocalist Jasper, screams and howls, and spits and sneers, with bone-chilling and psychotic horsepower.

Think Kurt Cobain with 4 lungs, fronting a hellish hardcore gang featuring 3 other ruthless punks on an ear-splitting mission. No brakes, no breaks. No rest for the wicked. Ronker is
a barbaric force, their singer is an out-of-this-normal-world performer, their debut is a flabbergasting monster.

All you loonies out there, get out of your straitjackets, escape from the asylum
and jump up and down on your way home like post-punk kangaroos on speed.

The four mustache horsemen of the Apocalypse have arrived.

No wonder these two masterminds show up on this record.

As Leg Puppy states about his UK country: “This used to be a hell of a great country.”
Again the narcissistic Tories fucked up. Brexshit is their awful work. Unfortunately,
they get away with their bullshit.

Sonically, Humanity 2.0 is heavily influenced by Puppy‘s natural musical habitat:
the 90s techno/acid house revolution, developed around the mid-1980s by DJs
from Chicago and British trance-dance and (il)legal rave-orientated acts such as
Chemical Brothers, The Orb, Leftfield, The Prodigy and lots of other e-tastic
crusaders. Throw all this together and you get Humanity 2.0.

roller coaster with mind-exploring, electronic symphonies
for a 2024 space Odyssey.

Who: The project of Brighton (UK) musicians
Mark Benton and Tom Chadd

Album: INTERNAL NOISE
2nd LP following their 2018 debut
Cabin Fever Blues.

Info: “The album explores the dichotomy between an inner turmoil that can plague a fragile mind and the euphoria of letting go and tuning out the outside world. The heavy burden of insomnia is a recurring theme while the album also celebrates the static hums and pulsating rhythms which contrast humans and machines.”

TUTV: Seadog alternate trippy synth dream-pop symphonies with delicate and subtle acoustic musings and with inventive, compelling compositions. Stylishly crafted melodies and crystalline harmonies are omnipresent, but in different tones and timbres, which makes Internal Noise a sonically multi-colored record.

Its production is spot-on, not over or underdone, the arrangements and orchestrations match the overall sparkling sonority. It’s obvious that a lot of work, creativity, energy and love went into this album. Give it a couple of spins and you’ll discover a high-songwriting-quality opus.

3. ‘R&B’ by ENGLISH TEACHER (UK)

These fast up-and-coming indies from Leeds (UK) fronted by wonderful
voice Lily Fontaine prove their huge talent once more with this new pearl.

R&B is another wayward slice of ET pop intensity. It starts a bit like a Dry Cleaning
song with a rigid bass riff and Fontaine‘s spoken word vocals, but turns quickly into
a strenuous stunner fueled by schizo guitar frenzy and jittery percussion.

5. ‘Red’ by YOKOPHONO (Finland)

Yokophono is a Finnish duo that hit the scene in 2020. Their music consists of energetic
dance-punk/indie rock songs. Their sound has been compared to the likes of Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys and even Queens Of The Stone Age. Consisting of just drums and guitar they also rely on their catchy melodies.

Their new single Red a is wham bloody wham bam disco-punk juggernaut.

This Finnish tandem make you jump around like a kangaroo on acid. Distorted guitars
and banging percussion work close together to create a filthy disco-punk juggernaut.

Red triggers your limbs’ actions from the kick-off until the final beat. Inbetween you
can go berserk every single time the clamorous chorus hits your greedy speakers.

6. ‘Douse’ by DOWN THE LEES (Canada)

After 3 albums the Canadian post-rock-noise project of seasoned Canadian singer-songwritter-guitarist Laura Lee Schultz, backed by a tremendous bass/drum tandem return with this scorching Herculean shocker from their new, upcoming EP, titled Dirt,
out on May 3.

The heaviest parts of this quiet/Loud/quiet/Loud uppercut resonate like if British blues rock turbo Royal Blood having a fierce sonic fight with post-industrial-punk legends Killing Joke.

7. ‘Dead Sound’ by SOME REMAIN (Ireland)

These 4 young Irish bullpits take you on a tempestuous ride with this new blazing blast.

Just like their countrymen Gilla Band, they look like 4 regular guys from around the block. But when they open the gates for Dead Sound they become 4 not-regular guys storming fast forward. A bumpy bass riff takes the haymaker on its back throughout the full course of its speedy rush.

The vocalist spits and sneers like Mark E Smith did his whole jarring career. This fresh 4-piece outfit from the North Wales nail
it right away with their first cut Mourning Sickness.

What a superb debut. It’s a slow-progressing psych guitar jam rotating around an intoxicating riff that creeps under your skin without asking. Think of early Radiohead
days. Engrossing and riveting.

There’s an eerie vocal and electrifying tension in the air that makes you wonder when
the song’s intensity will explode. But it moves on like a serpent on a mission until the last second.

The reincarnated Ramones are back among us as 4 Ramonas fronted led by Australian songwriter (now living in Los Angeles) and musician Romy Hoffman. They make schizo, synthy, paranoid, post-punk with a dash of dysmorphic desire.

They already have released 2 albums,
Fixations (2014) and No Nostalgia (2022).

They have a new rad sizzler out now.

Expect unbridled punky/poppy electricity delivered with genuine gusto and spontaneous bravado. Catchy as hell, inflamed with rough guitar riffs, bang-on drumming, Hoffmann‘s deadpan vocals and zippy harmonies. Spicy and saucy stuff.

14. ‘Into The Light’ by SUKIE SMITH (London)

Sukie Smith is a songstress from London who has collaborated widely with artists, musicians and writers creating cross-disciplinary sonic work, exhibiting and performing internationally. She has released three critically acclaimed albums with her band
Madam and toured throughout the UK and Europe.

Into The Light is a new compostion from her upcoming 4th album, named ‘The Glass Dress
and a Ringing Bell’
and will land on 8 March via Smith’s own label Shillingboy Records.

A song about leaving a turbulent relationship Smith found herself trapped in during lockdown, as Smith succinctly says, “I wrote this, then escaped,” with its focus a celebration of the jubilation felt in newfound freedom and the liberation found in the enlightening processes of recovery.

Into The Light grooves and moves pushed by dynamic eurythmics from the get-go, and keeps on cruising throughout its ablaze 3.07-minute duration. Glowing jingle-jangle guitar play, rock-solid drumming and Smith‘s impassioned vocals combine for a striking stroke.

15. ‘Green Banana’ by LEE SCRATCH PERRY feat. Shaun Ryder (Jam/Uk)

The iconic Jamaican pioneer of dub reggae passed away in 2021, aged 85.

His final album, titled King Perry is now posthumously released. It features
vocal guest performances from Greentea Peng, Shaun Ryder, Tricky, Marta, Rose Waite
and Fifi Rong.

16. ‘Spiral Down’ by EX-HYENA (Boston, MA)

The musical project of Bo Barringer and Reuben Bettsak, have since their project’s inception in 2020, surfacing through the haze of a global pandemic and illuminated by the city’s darkest corners, produced steady and prolific beats across underground dance floors.

Their 3rd album, called A Kiss of the Mind,
is waiting in the pipeline for its imminent release.

First new shared piece Spiral Down is vintage synth-pop pulsation. Utterly infectious. There’s a shadowy side to it, but its bootylicious vibes, its subtle guitar riff, its shiny electronic waves and moony vocals combine for a spot-on EBM thrill.

17. ‘What The World Could Be’ by COMMON CULTURE (UK)

Common Culture is a rousing, fiddle-driven alternative folk band from Barnsley, England.

They fuse traditional and contemporary elements into an upbeat and energetic
sound, their songs are full of catchy hooks, infectious rhythms and a party spirit.

What The World Could Be is one of the two singles they launched this month.

The song serves as a poignant lament for the Earth’s dwindling natural beauty and a stirring call to action in the face of greed and injustice destroying the planet. It’s five to twelve, indeed. The majority of political leaders look the other way when these world-crushing issues come up. Some even don’t believe that our climate is changing drastically. More red-alert songs like this one are always welcome.

18. ‘On The Road’ by BAD RITUAL (Poland)

Bad Ritual is a Polish trio formed at the beginning of 2020 by three architects.
They play songs immersed in a dark and unsettling atmosphere. Their music is
a blend of indie-folk, swampy blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. It often evokes associations
with David Lynch‘s films, spaghetti westerns, and film noir.

They have their arresting self-titled debut album out now. Stream it here.

Standout track On The Road gets you in Bad Ritual‘s sonic/cinematic world. Its melancholic timbre and shiny guitar sparks, make me think of romantic glam legend Chris Isaak. Bad Ritual‘s idol David Lynch directed Isaak‘s Wicked Game video that featured flashes from
his 1990 Wild At Heart movie).

19.’Nicholas Palace’ by IMUSTBE LEONARDO (Italy)

The Berlin-based, Italian singer-songwriter has, so far, 2 albums and 2 EPs on his résumé.

New single Nicholas Palace will be part of his 3rd album,
named not to be scared of the weekend.

Leonardo: “I wrote this song after reading Nick Cave‘s reply (note: read below) to some of
his fans, who had asked him why he was about to attend the coronation of the UK’s king as
part of the Australian delegation. I love most of Nick Cave’s records and I consider him one
of the greatest songwriters ever.

I’m also a long-time Nick Cave fan. A truly remarkable artist. But attending King Charles‘ coronation? Disgusting. That guy nor his late mother never ever had something done to earn their status, they were born that way, they didn’t pay taxes for many years etc… It’s just as disgusting as Johnny ‘Rotten’ Lydon (the Sex Pistols‘ album the best punk one ever, in my book) voting for natural-born charlatan Trump. What is wrong with those millionaire artists?

That said Nicholas Palace is an infectious groove, a jagged jam, driven by an addictive riff with Leonardo‘s augmenting the funeral vibe of the song, think The Velvet Underground on a rainy day. Around the 1.30 min mark aggressive guitar play accentuates the ultimate end of Cave‘s birthday party.

single Bye Bye she shared a second piece.

I’M A MAN is an equally slo-mo industrial shocker with Gordon‘s
spoken-word vocality adding a cold-blooded perturbation.

who also appeared the ‘Bye Bye’ video, and male model Conor Fay.
