While the title Songs of Love and Hate sums up the album’s themes accurately enough, it’s hardly as simple as that description might lead you to expect, in these eight songs… If Songs of Love and Hate isn’t Cohen’s best album, it comes close enough to be essential to anyone interested in his work.” Score: 9/10.

Reveries for the laziest day of the week…

Friends Bill Callahan and Will Oldham – Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – have been
pretty active the past months with covering songs from selected songwriters
like Johnnie Frierson, Air Supply, and Michael Burton among others.

And here’s another melancholic pearl. This time an emotive ballad by the late
great Leonard Cohen. They picked The Night Of Santiago, which came out
in 2019, three years after he passed away when his son Adam released it first
under the title Thanks For The Dance.

The Night Of Santiago is a song based on a brief affair, which Cohen adapted from
a Federico García Lorca poem. Oldham & Callahan invited avant-rock guitar wizard
and former Squirrel Bait/Gastr Del Sol member David Grubbs for this one.

As we all know too well time flies without mercy and doesn’t pause for just one second.
So, I was really surprised to find out that legendary and iconic Canadian poet, novelist
and supreme singer-songwriter LEONARD COHEN left Planet Earth already two years ago, on 7 November 2016. He was 82. To remember a one of a kind artist Turn Up The Volume selected three goosebumps Cohen moments performed live. Here we go…

HISTORY – 7 April 1969

On 7th April 1969, yes, a half century ago today LEONARD COHEN, the late, great Canadian singer/songwriter released his second LP, titled SONGS FROM A ROOM. American music weekly Rolling Stone wrote “Well, it looks like Leonard Cohen’s second
try won’t have them dancing in the streets either. It doesn’t take a great deal of listening
to realize that Cohen can’t sing, period. And yet, the record grows on you…”

This review says a lot about how the early Cohen records, before he became a bona fide icon, were perceived. Nobody really understood what this weird artist and his dark, lazy voice was about back then, although many understand this guy had something special.
The album reached #63 on the US Billboard Albums Chart and #2 on the UK charts.
