‘LET’S DANCE’ By DAVID BOWIE – No 1 Hit In The UK 40 Years Ago Today

21 May 2023

One of the greatest hits of the late great musical genius DAVID BOWIE was
LET’S DANCE (more than 248 million streams on Spotify), the classic title track
of his 1983 album. The single hit the top spot of the UK charts on 21 May 1983,
40 years ago today.

Video: It was shot in Australia, together with the other LP’s hit ‘China Girl‘.
Co-directed by Bowie and frequent video collaborator David Mallet, the clip
starred, besides Bowie, two students from Sydney’s Aboriginal Islander Dance
Theatre
.

DAVID BOWIE – His 15th LP ‘LET’S DANCE’ Came Out 40 Years Ago

Back in time

16 April 2023

40 years ago (14 April 1983), late musical genius DAVID BOWIE
released his 15th longplayer, named LET’S DANCE.

As a whole, it isn’t one of his best, to my ears, but it featured 3 topnotch singles
with the title track (produced by Chic Le Freak‘s legend Nile Rodgers, who played
guitar on most of the tracks, and also unforgettable for its masterly video clip)
Modern Love and China Girl that helped big time for the commercial success of
the album.

Rolling Stone said: “Let’s Dance sounds great; it’s all beat, brains and breathiness.
The album’s most intelligent strategy is its utter simplicity: Rodgers serves up guitar
lines in thick slabs, and Bowie’s voice cuts across their surface like a knife slicing meat.
His mannered whine is alluringly distant — charming but formal, inveigling but austere.”
Score: 4/5.

It peaked at #4 in the US, #1 in Canada and the UK
and also the top seat in several European countries.

Thirty-five years ago today – 21 May 1983 – late genius DAVID BOWIE hit the top spot
on the UK singles chart with timeless diamond single LET’S DANCE, from the same titled bestseller album. It featured the late legendary blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan . Here’s that still amazing beauty and the iconic girl with the red shoes…

Let’s dance
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues
Let’s dance
To the song they’re playin’ on the radio
Let’s sway
While color lights up your face
Let’s sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space
If you say run
I’ll run with you
And if you say hide
We’ll hide
Because my love for you
Would break my heart in two
If you should fall into my arms
And tremble like a flower
Let’s dance
Let’s dance
For fear your grace should fall
Let’s dance
For fear tonight is all
Let’s sway
You could look into my eyes
Let’s sway
Under the moonlight, this serious moonlight
And if you say run
I’ll run with you
And if you say hide
We’ll hide…
