Today 35 years ago, on 21 April 1990, the late, legendary, outspoken, controversial
and expressive Irish songstress SINEAD O’CONNOR (1966-2023) topped the US Charts with her gigantic hit NOTHING COMPARES 2 U (more than 450 million streams on Spotify).
A goosebumps ballad written by the late royal genius Prince who passed
away – as if it was, unfortunately, meant to be – 9 years ago today, in 2016.
Today 35 years ago, on 24 March 1990, the legendary, outspoken, controversial
and expressive Irish songstres SINEAD O’CONNOR topped the UK Charts with her
second and breakthrough LP I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T.
Together with her splendid 1994 album Universal Motherthe best work she ever accomplished (in my book). A highly evocative record filled with heart-and-soul-touching beauties, and of course, her massive hit single, Prince cover Nothing Compares 2 U
(more than 440 million streams on Spotify) which helped to increase the LP’s sales.
Rolling Stone wrote: “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got is less about O’Connor’s ambitions than the cost of those ambitions, and in almost every regard, it is an even better record than her first. The album seems the work of a transformed woman — someone who has put aside much of the anger and confusion that fueled her earlier songs and has found a hard-earned measure of spiritual happiness.” Full review here. Score: 4.5/5.

Last Wednesday, a tribute show forSINEAD O’CONNOR, who passed
away last July, was staged at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York. Also Shane MacGowan (who died last December) was celebrated at the event.
At one point, her 28-year-old daughter ROISIN WATERS, also a musician,
took the stage and sang a stunning version of her mother’s greatest hit,
written by Prince) NOTHING COMPARES 2 U.
Goosebumps.
😍😍😍 The Sinéad & Shane memorial concert at Carnegie Hall included (pictured) Glen Hansard, Josh Ritter, Sinéad’s incredible daughter Roisin Waters, actual Pogue Cate O’Riordan, Lisa Hannigan, Bettye Lavette, Amanda Palmer, Imelda May, and the Mountain Goats! pic.twitter.com/otOWPhUfjZ
It’s hard to say goodbye to such an unqiue artist, such an inspiring personality,
such an attractive human being, such a bedazzling voice. And if you go surfin’ on
the internet you’ll see a tsunami of love for her, even from some people who hated
her because of her controversial point of views, well, controversial in the opinion
of those critics.
Anyway, I’ll just focus on O’Connor‘s vocal
brilliance again (and again and again).
This 2007 live performance of her greatest – Prince written – hit NOTHING COMPARES 2 U (almost 295 million streams on Spotify)
sends shivers down your spine.
SARAH WALK is a Los Angeles based singer-songwriter with
a crystal voice balancing between chanteuses Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten.
She recently shared an amazing version of global hit Nothing
Compares 2 U written and recorded by the late great Prince
and made world-famous by Sinead O’Connor back in 1990.
Walk: “I didn’t want to get too inside the other versions that already existed because I wanted to make sure I approached it my own way.”
Her version is wholly affecting with an ongoing magnetic piano
touch, a heavy-hearted orchestration, and her goosebumps
voice. Mesmeric rendition!
It’s almost three years (17 May 2017) since troubled singer/songwriter and towering voice CHRIS CONNELL decided, due to severe depression problems, to leave this world. A really sad loss. He fronted grunge icons Soundgarden, founded Temple Of The Dog and made a lasting impression as a solo artist.
While surfing on the internet yesterday I came across his spine-tingling, acoustic version
of Prince‘s brilliant love ballad ‘NOTHING COMPARES 2 U’, made famous, worldwide, by Sinead O’Connor. His utterly gripping vox and the weeping cello bring you to tears. Get goosebumps right here…

Dublin born singer/songwriter SINEAD O’CONNOR‘s second, breakthrough album ‘I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T GOT’ hit the top spot of the UK albums chart 29 years ago, on 24 March 1990. Her cover of the Prince written ballad ‘NOTHING COMPARES 2 U’ was released as the second single off the LP and made O’Connor a superstar. I guess anybody with a little bit of interest for music knows the moving, accompanying clip…
