Vitalizing tunes that work faster than a stream of caffeine

It’s already 30 years (time flies indeed) since Athens, Georgia-born Kevin Barnes
launched his band oF MONTREAL, named after a failed romance between him
and a woman ‘of Montreal‘.

Barnes just announced their 20th LP, titled Gethermead.
It will show up on 6 June. Tracklist and order info here.

The album was made following a lot of personal upheaval including a breakup
with his then-fiance which found him relocating from Vermont to Brooklyn.

The lead single, named WHEN is a flaming, riff-packed rocker.

Barnes: “‘When’ is mora a song about yearning, sadness, confusion, frustration, than it is a song about having sex. I’m hiding behind a shield of sexual bravado and pretending as if my only needs are physical. It’s very transparent that I’m longing for much more than just libidinal fulfillment, but those other things are being withheld.’”

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

of Montreal fans know, of course, that this band is not from Montreal, but from
Athens, Georgia (where that other pretty famous band came from, named R.E.M.).

It was founder/singer-songwriter/orchestrator Kevin Barnes who came up with
the name, referring to a failed romance between him and a woman “of Montreal”.

That said, the news came in that Barnes and his band have bagged their 19th LP.
They named it LADY ON THE CUSP and will drop it on planet Earth on May 17.

And here comes the first appetizer, titled YUNG HEARTS BLEED FREE .

Barnes: “Influenced by the Leos Carax film Boy Meets Girl, Bootsy’s Rubber Band,
and my recent purchase of a Yamaha TG33 and a Kawai K1M. I wanted to make a
strutting, sexy little vamp of a song that just kind of chugged along and felt relaxed
and playful and free.”

Wake-up people, here comes a funky mid-tempo
pump up the bass stomper.

Just like with the album’s title and the first single’s title
Marijuana’s A Working Woman I have no clue what it all
means. This is probaly what happens after too much
stoned lockdowns.

Expect a harmonies designed Beatles-esque trip
and a video clip as quirky as the song’s title and
these lines…

“I was creaming when I wrote this so forgive me if it makes you wet /
If there’s any position you can’t cum in I haven’t found it yet.”

It’s the third longplayer in 3 years. If the lockdowns had one advantage
it was that many artists were never as productive with all the time on
their hands when sitting at home. I still wonder what plumbers did
during the lockdowns.

First single: MARIJUANA’S A WORKING WOMAN – single title of the year?

Barnes: “Like all the songs on the album, this one was informed by pandemic isolation
and the psychological struggle inherent in that kind of existence. The lyrics are a free flowing collage of all that I was perceiving and absorbing during that time period. I swapped alcohol
for weed midway through the pandemic and that is what the title of the song refers to.”
