THE NEW EVENS – Brighton’s Medieval Folk-Punk Combo Are A Must Hear/See Sensation

27 May 2024

Band: THE NEW EVES
Who: Must hear/see all-female indies from
Brighton (where everybody is in a band).

Sound: Astounding, razzle-dazzle, inventive and unique.

Concert: Le Botanique, Brussels, 24 May 2024

Last year I discovered these 4 truly amazing Amazons when their jiving single
Original Sin hit my headphones and I saw the accompanying comical clip. Last
Friday I saw them live for the first time. It was, by far, the best performance I
witnessed this year.

The New Eves are truly special. They look/dress/sound like a medieval folk-punk combo. And the historic basement of Brussels‘ wonderful Botanique building was the perfect location for them to play.

They design their own clothes. They mix different musical genres with multiple instruments, traditional pop/rock ones (guitar, bass, drum, harmonica) and
less traditional pop/rock ones (flute, contrabass, mini-accordion, violin).

They jump in one and the same song from fervent folk vibes reminiscent of British legends Steeleye Span to classical music fragments, to psychedelic Velvet Underground jangliness, to Dark-Age harmonies, to solo/choir chanting. Your ears/eyes are in constant motion. They make regular rock/pop bands look/sound old-fashioned.

Sonically, visually, and performance-wise, The New Eves are a singular sensation.
A must-hear/see spectacle. I hope they come up soon with their debut album.
