PINK FLOYD Released Supreme Debut Album ‘THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN’ 55 Years Ago

Back in time

4 August 2022

This day 55 years ago, on 4 August 1967, art-rock icons PINK FLOYD launched
their debut LP, the stunning ‘THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN’.

An indefectible, influential psychedelic classic with most of the songs written by troubled genius Syd Barrett. A year later he was fired for his erratic and uncontrollable behavior due to too many drugs.

NME‘s review: ” ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ has inspired plenty of people – Blur, The Coral, Klaxons, The Horrors, Devendra Banhart, pretty much every Home Counties art-school band ever – which makes it all the more ironic that one of the few bands that haven’t copied it is Pink Floyd themselves. It’s down to one man, of course: before he lost his mind, Pink Floyd’s main songwriter was Syd Barrett, a sensitive, good-looking middle-class art student from Cambridge. His songs on ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ assemble a cast of cats, silver
shoes, unicorns, mice called Gerald, bikes, gnomes and the I Ching, and put them to some
of the most inventive and surprising psychedelic music ever recorded.”

Poster This! Historic PINK FLOYD Concerts In London In 1994

PINK FLOYD started a 15-night run at Earls Court
in London on 12 Oct 1994.

Less than a minute after the band had started playing
‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’, a scaffolding stand holding
1200 fans collapsed.

Ninety-six people were injured, with 36 needing hospital
treatment. The show was immediately canceled and
re-scheduled.

PINK FLOYD Released Their SYD BARRETT Written Single ‘SEE EMILY PLAY’ 55 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

16 June 2022

55 years ago today, on 16 June 1967, mega legends PINK FLOYD released
their 2nd single SEE EMILY PLAY. A psychedelic pop pearl written by the late
great SYD BARRETT. He played slide guitar on the cracker using a plastic ruler.

Emily tries but misunderstands, ah ooh
She’s often inclined to borrow somebody’s dreams till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let’s try it another way
You’ll lose your mind and play
Free games for May
See Emily play
Soon after dark Emily cries, ah ooh
Gazing through trees in sorrow hardly a sound till tomorrow
There is no other day
Let’s try it another way
You’ll lose your mind and play
Free games for May
See Emily play
Put on a gown that touches the ground, ah ooh
Float on a river forever and ever, Emily (Emily)
There is no other day
Let’s try it another way
You’ll lose your mind and play
Free games for May
See Emily play

First New PINK FLOYD Music Since 1994 In Support For The Ukrainian People

Daily electricity to load your batteries

19 April 2022

This is the first new original music that PINK FLOYD have
recorded together as a band since 1994’s The Division Bell.

HEY HEY RISE UP is written by David Gilmour and released in support of the people of Ukraine, featuring an extraordinary vocal performance by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of popular Ukrainian band BoomBox. All proceeds go to Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief.

David Gilmour: “In 2015, I played a show at Koko in London in support of the Belarus Free Theatre. Pussy Riot and the Ukrainian band, Boombox, were also on the bill. They were supposed to do their own set, but their singer Andriy had visa problems, so the rest of the band backed me for my set – we played ‘Wish You Were Here’ for Andriy that night. Recently I read that Andriy had left his American tour with Boombox, had gone back to Ukraine, and joined up with the Territorial Defense. Then I saw this incredible video on Instagram, where he stands in a square in Kyiv with this beautiful gold-domed church and sings in the silence of a city with no traffic or background noise because of the war. It was a powerful moment that made me want to put it to music.”

The track uses Andriy’s vocals taken from his Instagram post of him in Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square singing Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow a patriotic Ukrainian anthem that emerged during the first world war. The title of this new Pink Floyd song is taken from the last line of the song which translates as ‘Hey, hey, rise up and rejoice’. The melodramatic opening choral parts are by the Ukrainian Veryovka Folk Song and Dance Ensemble.

You can watch singer/soldier Andriy Khlyvnyuk singing the song for his unfortunate
countrymen (that inspired Gilmour to write the gripping goosebumps piece) here.
