PATTI SMITH – ‘Piss Factory’ (1974)…

Sonic knockouts from the past

Piss Factory‘ by PATTI SMITH
The first recording of a song she wrote herself (with music from her pianist Richard Sohl).
It was actually a poem which recounted her teenage experiences in a baby buggy factory, expressing her assurance that she would not let this awful time kill her ambitions. It was the B-side to her cover version of ‘Hey Joe‘ and released independently in 1974. It was ten minutes of what seems like a free jazz piano driven performance with Patti Smith reading, actually half-spitting, her poem over it. Pretty spellbinding, pretty special. Lyrics here.
