PREFAB SPROUT – Second Album ‘STEVE McQUEEN’ Released 35 Years Ago

23 June 2020

Band: Prefab Sprout (Witton Gilbert, UK)
Start: formed in 1978 by brothers Paddy and Martin McAloon
Album: Steve McQueen
Released: 22 June 1985 – 35 years ago

Pitchfork said: “McAlloon aspired to the standards of Stephen Foster, Gershwin, Sondheim, Quincy Jones, McCartney; saw himself as a contemporary of Prince rather than Lloyd Cole. He had a grand sense of pop music, and in 1985, that kind of grandeur seemed to be available via producers like Thomas Dolby. You can imagine these songs performed by, oh, Marianne Faithfull, Bryan Ferry, Will Young, Kylie Minogue, Rufus Wainwright, or Antony Hegarty. A handful of these songs have the quality of standards.”

Keywords: stream of pop delight, the Fred Astaire of words, feel good-better-best quality
Key tracks: Faron Young / When Love Breaks Down / Moving The River

PREFAB SPROUT Released America Influenced Pop Juice ‘FROM LANGLEY PARK TO MEMPHIS’ 30 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

12 March 2018

BAND: PREFAB SPROUT (Witton Gilbert, UK)

ALBUM: FROM LANGLEY PARK TO MEMPHIS

RELEASED: 14 March 1988 – 30 years ago…

ALL MUSIC wrote: “As suggested by the title, ‘From Langley Park to Memphis’ is Prefab Sprout’s spiritual journey into the heart of American culture. Obsessed with rock ‘n’ roll (‘The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’) and Bruce Springsteen (‘Cars and Girls’), fascinated with gospel music (‘Venus of the Soup Kitchen’) and locked in a love/hate relationship with New York City (‘Hey! Manhattan’), Paddy McAloon turns an iconoclastic eye to the other side of the Atlantic in order to make some sense of it all. An airy, lounge-pop feel permeates the record, which also sports cameos from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Pete Townshend.”

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: to match their previous, magnificent LP ‘Steve McQueen‘ was humanly impossible I guess, but this 3rd full length contains enough juicy pop moments, glossy musings and catchy sparks to dream away to all day long…

THREE HIGHLIGHTS: The King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll / Golden Calf / Hey Manhattan!

*THE KING OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

* GOLDEN CALF

* HEY MANHATTAN!
