Today, everlasting cool rock chick CHRISSIE HYNDE and her line-up changing PRETENDERS released LP #12. It’s titled RELENTLESS . You can buy it here.
HYNDE about the album’s title: “I enjoy seeing the various meanings and
origins of a word. And I liked the definition: ‘showing no abatement of intensity.’
So when it came to an album title, it seemed fitting. You know… to keep doing it.
I think anyone in a band is constantly questioning if they should keep going.
It starts as a youthful pursuit and eventually, it makes you wonder, why am
I doing this? It’s the life of the artist. You never retire. You become relentless.”
HYNDE – a year ago – about touring and the new album.
UNCUT Magazine says: “She has crooned before, but the freight of intimate emotion
here, letting low notes waver within the ferally alive arrangement, is masterful. Ending
an album of looking back, this is the new prime of Chrissie Hynde.” Score: 4/5.

TUTV: When I saw Hynde – the only original Pretender left – rockin’ out for a full 75 minutes, with old and new songs, in Belgium last May (review here) I thought the new album (at that point only the first single, smooth rocker Let The Sun Come In was out) would be pretty hot-blooded too. Now I know it’s the opposite.
Except for Losing My Sense Of Taste, Let The Sun Come In and Vainglorious, Hynde chooses
to sit down, relax and reflect on her past, her present and her future, with tender ballads, co-written with guitarist James Walbourne. And as she proved several times before, she’s a most affecting crooner. Relentless gets more heartwarming with every spin. Pretenders are the talk of the town again.

CHRISSIE HYNDE and her PRETENDERS dropped the news of the release of their
12th album, baptized Relentless, back in April. It will arrive on September 1st.

Today they treat their fans with another, the 3th, cut named A LOVE
Hynde: “I suppose ‘A Love’ is the most traditionally Pretenders-sounding song on
the album, in the vein of ‘Kid’ or ‘Talk Of The Town’ or any of the midtempo ones over
the years. I often see love/relationships almost in the same vein as drug addiction.
Although, having said that, I know I am jaded and cynical.”

New striking strokes

Last month CHRISSIE HYNDE and her PRETENDERS announced that their new LP,
the 12th, titled Relentless, will come out on September 1. The news was accompanied
by the jangly lead single Let The Sun Come In.
Soon after (30 May) I saw the band play a cooking show in Antwerp, Belgium,
with Hynde turning all cylinders on like an eager Riot grrrl, despite being 71.
And now the stars share a second appetizer named I THINK ABOUT YOU DAILY.
A romantic and nostalgic piano ballad. It also features a string arrangement from Radiohead‘s multi-instrumentalist Johny Greenwood, who also conducted the
12 Ensemble in the recording session.
Hynde about Greenwood: “I met Jonny a couple of times, and we’re obviously big fans
of him because he’s done some incredible music over the years. I saw him at the Phantom Thread premiere, where the film was running onscreen with a live orchestra playing. And we spoke afterward and he expressed an interest in doing something one day. I was thrilled and very surprised. He also came down to see a Valve Bone Woe show we were doing in the basement of a Pizza Express. So when we discussed the idea of getting strings on “I Think
About You Daily,” he was the first choice. Legend!”

Last week (30 May) CHRISSIE HYNDE and her PRETENDERS stopped
in Antwerp (Belgium) on their current EU tour. Hynde at 71 still is an
glamorous and arousing rock bitch filling the venue with her still
formidable voice.
Wow!
They played a straightforward, full-gass, hard rockin’ (emphasis on hard)
set with a rambunctious mix of new and old material. The new Pretenders
album, their 12th titled Relentless lands on September 1.

As the crowd did loud and clear, Chrissie loved every
second of the show too. Her performance was one you
label as dumbfounding. Keep on pretending in the free
world.
