We’re on our way, slowly but surely, to the end of 2025.
Instead of starting to think about this year’s best LPs,
let’s go back to 2024 and listen to TUTV’s 20 Best Albums
again and look back on what we wrote about each one
of them.

Today: No. 14

Band: FONTAINES D.C.

Album: ROMANCE
Their 4th LP

Pitchfork: “On its fourth album, the Irish group trades steely post-punk for stadium-sized
alt rock with a hefty dose of Y2K nostalgia. It’s an unexpected shift, but they handle it with panache.”

TUTV: The young Dubliners have become first-class songwriters (which they already
proved with confident style on previous LP Skinty Fia– still my favourite one). Frontman Grian Chatten‘s lyrics show (again) his observative view on this modern-day, confused world and how it affects his inner-self.

This is not their masterpiece yet to my ears, but it’s only a matter of
time that they will come up with a longplayer that will blow us all away.

FONTAINES D.C. – New Video For New Album Single ‘BUG’

Irish indie heroes FONTAINES D.C. are climbing higher and higher up the rock
star ladder after releasing their 4th LP Romance, which got raving reviews.

To keep the momentum going, they’re on the road (probably for a year
or two) and just shared a new video for BUG, one of the album’s singles.

The clip was directed by Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Fish Tank), who has
a new drama movie out this Friday, titled Bird. The video is billed as “a short
form reimagination” of the film.

This Friday, 23 August, Irish indie heroes FONTAINES D.C. launch their
4th album, baptized Romance. Here and there you can already read
raving reviews. Check NME‘s one here.

The final preview, named IN THE MODERN WORLD confirms what the other
3 shared pieces have already revealed. Fontaines D.C. have broadened their
sonic perspectives and boundaries, now becoming a more seasoned and
more mature band who deliver 24-Carat songwriting splendor.

Irish indie stars FONTAINES D.C. are on their way to launch
their 4th album. Romance comes our way on August 23rd.

Conor Deegan (bassist) “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance.
Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as
directly as Dogrel. The second album is about that detachment, and the third is
about Irishness dislocated in the diaspora. Now we look to where and what else
there is to be romantic about.”

Get ready for the album’s appetizer number 3, named HERE’S THE THING.
An a-typical poppy Fontaines DC jam. My ears are quite convinced after all
3 tasters that the Irishmen will surprise us big time with album number 4.

Grian Chatten: “It’s an anxious tune that twists and turns in
what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness.”

Following the first single, the layered rap and musing jam Starburster comes another preview. FAVOURITE is a jangly chant reminding my ears of earlier The Strokes riff rockers.

Grian Chatten (frontman) “This never-ending sound to it, a continuous
cycle from euphoria to sadness, two worlds spinning forever.”

The first single STARBURSTER is a tense jam, rollin’ on with a bone-chilling flow and frontman Grian Chatten rapping all over it with his characteristic uptight parlando.
