2 November 2025

Americana star JOHN MELLENCAMP (74 now) released one of his hit
singles SMALL TOWN this day 40 years ago, on 2 November 1980.

It was part of his 8th LP, named Scarecrow. It went to #8 in the US.

Mellencamp wrote the song about his experiences growing up in a small town in Indiana, having been born in Seymour, Indiana, and living in Bloomington, Indiana, which, at the time of the release of the song, was larger.

“Well, I was born in a small town
And I live in a small town
Probably die in a small town
Oh, those small communities

All my friends are so small town
My parents live in the same small town
My job is so small town
Provides little opportunity, hey
Educated in a small town”

JOHN MELLENCAMP – Celebrated Singer Songwriter Rocker Released His 8th LP ‘SCARECROW’ 40 Years Ago Today

31 July 2025

Highly lauded and prize-winning singer-songwriter star JOHN MELLENCAMP (73 now) released his triumphant 8th LP SCARECROW this day 40 years ago, on 31 July 1980.

It peaked at number two on the US Billboard. The album has
produced 3 top-ten hits. ‘R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.’, ‘Lonely Ol’ Night’,
and ‘Small Town‘.

The overall theme of the record wad the fading of
the American Dream in the face of corporate greed.

Mellencamp said years later: “With Scarecrow, I was finally starting to find my feet
as a songwriter. Finally, for the first time, I realized what I thought I wanted to say in
a song. I wanted it to be more akin to Tennessee Williams, John Steinbeck, Faulkner,
as opposed to The Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan.”

Pitchfork: “The thing just leaps out of the speakers. The cool, natural efficiency of Mellencamp’s band combined with Gehman’s clean, muscular production adds up
to a platonic ideal of a rock’n’roll record: It’s direct, unfussy, and unpretentious,
barreling forward on the strength of a mammoth backbeat.”

Pysch Rockers WAND Share Moody Single From New LP – Here’s ‘SCARECROW’…

Brand new sonic impulses

Los Angeles psych rockers WAND already produced four albums and one EP since they entered the music scene back in 2014. They have just announced longplayer number five ‘LAUGHING MATTER‘. “A record about love in a time of terror” says the band. Ahead of its April release here’s first single ‘SCARECROW‘. Overall a moody contemplation accentuated by saddening vocals and wistful piano play, although strikingly whimsical guitar sequences add an opposing emotion. Wayward like many Radiohead compositions. Have a listen right here…
