Manchester Indies CHEW MAGNA With Instant Rock Earworm ‘SECRETS’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

28 July 2023

Band: CHEW MAGNA
Who: Up-and-coming indies
from Manchester.

New single/video: SECRETS
Their ode to compulsive lying,
bull-shitting and hyperbole. Oops.

Laurie (singer/songwriter): “Secrets originally started life as an acoustic song
I wrote for my folk group, but we jammed it a few times, channeling bands like
Sebadoh and Superchunk and it transformed pretty quickly. Clocking in at just
over two minutes, what ‘Secrets’ lacks in duration it makes up for in volume!

Simon: We wanted it to be noisy to juxtapose the poppy melodies. Laurie
and I don’t play a single note in the verse, we just leave the guitars to start
squealing”.

TUTV: It’s one of those (not so frequent) tunes that you know you’ll love after
15 seconds. Secrets is a straightforward, solid rocker that leaves the gate with
greedy drum hits and screeching guitars in the back, but in an eye/ear blink the
engine starts up and races towards the jubilant chorus. A bit of Weezer and, yes,
Lou Barlow (Sebadoh / Dinosaur Jr) here and there.

Anyway, it’s an instant rock earworm. One little remark: it’s pretty short.
On the other hand, lets not forget that the Ramones made a living out of
2-minute songs and secondly, there’s always the repeat button. Click.

Waking Up With New Maddening Missile ‘SCERETS’ By Metal Freaks ONI Feat. IGGY POP

Works faster than caffeine

1 May 2022

Worshipped metal freaks ONI from Canada launched a new maddening missile called SECRETS from their new, forthcoming album Loathing Light, out on 17 June.

The song is a collaborative effort by frontman
Jake Oni and Lamb Of God leader Randy Blythe

It was Oni who came up with the idea
of a second vocalist. Enter Iggy Pop.

Oni: “Iggy’s vocals are so iconic and instantly recognisable, his style is what we were after.
But we figured, let’s see if we can get the man himself to check it out,” Oni explained in a press release. “He came down, we had some food and just chilled. And then he did his thing all over the song. He asked me for ideas about how to approach it, which was just crazy and cool. It all worked so well and came out sick.”

Press play and open the gates to hell…
