DAVID BOWIE Released His Cocaine Album ‘STATION TO STATION’ 50 Years Ago Today

Significant longplayers from yesteryear

23 January 2026

The thin white duke DAVID BOWIE (1947 – 2016) released his 10th LP
STATION TO STATION on 23 January 1976, today 50 years ago.

It peaked at #5 in the UK, and #3 in the USA.

During the sessions, Bowie was suffering from various drug addictions, most
prominently cocaine, and subsequently stated that he recalled almost nothing
of the production.

Bowie in 1987: “I was so blocked, so stoned. It’s quite a casualty case, isn’t it.
I’m amazed I came out of that period, honest. When I see that now I cannot
believe I survived it. I was so close to really throwing myself away physically,
completely.”

Rolling Stone wrote in retrospect: “An album that was both musically
accessible and lyrically elliptical, a transition between the plastic soul of
Young Americans and the chilly electronic hum of the Berlin trilogy that
followed.”

The cover art featured a still from the film
The Man Who Fell To Earth, in which Bowie
had the main role.

DAVID BOWIE – The Late Virtuoso Released Hit Single ‘GOLDEN YEARS’ Today 50 Years Ago

Top singles from the past

21 November 2025

The late musical virtuoso DAVID BOWIE released his hit single
GOLDEN YEARS today 50 years ago, on 21 November 1975.

It was the lead single of his 10th LP Station To Station.

It reached #8 in the UK and #10 in the US

The song utilises elements of several 1950s doo-wop tracks in its arrangement. Lyrically, the narrator offers a companion hope of entering a limousine and being isolated from the outside world. In other words, he assures his companion that she will always be protected by him and promises her a brighter future.

“I’ll stick with you, baby, for a thousand years
Nothing’s gonna touch you in these golden years
Golden years Golden years, gold, wah-wah-wah
Come, b-b-b-baby”

BACK IN TIME With GEORGE HARRISON – DAVID BOWIE – DJANGO REINHARDT And PETULA CLARKE

This day in 1976/1971/1965/1910

23 Jan 1971

GEORGE HARRISON (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was
the first Beatle to score a massive #1 hit single with My Sweet Lord.
No 1 in the UK, US, Ireland, New-Zealand, Mexico, and several European
countries.

It featured on his triple debut album All Things Must Past.

Later in the 1970s, the news spread that the song was subject of copyright
infringement due to its similarity to the Ronnie Mack song He’s Fine, a 1963 hit
for the New York girl group The Chiffons. Harrison had to pay a huge amount for
the plagiarism.

THE THIN WHITE DUKE Released His 10th Album ‘STATION TO STATION’ 47 Years Ago Today

Back in time

23 January 2023

Artist: DAVID BOWIE
8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016
Career: 26 studio LPs between 1967 and 2016

Anniversary album: STATION TO STATION – his 10th LP
Released: 23 January 1976 – 47 years ago today

The title track introduced Bowie’s new persona, the Thin White Duke
that became the mouthpiece for the whole longplayer. The late genius
used the moniker thereafter on tour.

Pitchfork said: “Arriving in the wake of 1975’s glam-rock-shunning, Philly-soul-fetishizing Young Americans, Station to Station offered proof that Bowie’s fascination with American funk and disco was no one-off lark. But if Young Americans often felt like a studied genre exercise, Station to Station filtered that rhythmic influence through some of Bowie’s other obsessions at the time: the austere Krautrock of Neu! and Kraftwerk, the occult, Nazism, and, yes, a whole lotta blow.” Score: 9.5/10.

Turn Up The Volume: Up there with his best work during his golden years.
