Poignant Heart And Soul Intimacy With Midnight Hour Crooner OLI SPLEEN

Best longplayer of April 2022

30 April 2022

Artist: OLI SPLEEN
Who: Singer-songwriter
from Brighton, UK

New album: STILL LIFE

Oli Spleen: Ten years ago when I was in Paris finalising my debut solo album
“Fag Machine”, I would not have believed that ten years on I’d be five albums in.”

Cover artwork: The cover art is a painting by Sara Abbott of a baby albatross,
dead from plastic consumption. Based on a photograph by Clare Fackler (NOAA
Office of National Marine Sanctuaries
). In seafaring folklore, it is thought that he
who kills the albatross will be cursed. This image reflects how we as a species are
dooming ourselves and future generations in our relationship to the environment.

Turn Up the Volume: Oftenly, hard times can be an artistic inspiration for
musicians (for all sorts of artists, actually). It can work or not for the psyche
of the listener. Here it works magnificently.

Spleen constructed 10 sonic paintings about his struggle for life, about
soul-destroying and physical pain, and doubts about the present and
the future.

10 heartfelt, tender, and very intimate ballads, at times distressing, at times mournful,
but in the end, there’s hope, redemption, and lust for life. Spleen‘s voice is both doleful
and warm, just like star crooners such as Nick Cave, Father John Misty, The National‘s maestro Matt Berninger and most of all the midnight hour voice of Tindersticks maestro Stuart Staples sound.

Ten pearls about suffering and surviving.
A poignant and riveting work. Don’t miss it.

14 April 2022

Artist: OLI SPLEEN
Who: Music project of Darryl W. Bullock
based in Brighton, UK

New album: STILL LIFE

His fourth album, based in part on his experiences of nearly
dying of AIDS-related complications in the summer of 2000.

Oli Spleen: “The album is dark, mysterious and wonderfully atmospheric.
Ten years ago when I was in Paris finalising my debut solo album “Fag Machine”,
I would not have believed that ten years on I’d be five albums in.”

Cover artwork: The cover art is a painting by Sara Abbott of a baby albatross,

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR Released Their Acclaimed Album ‘STILL LIFE’ 45 Years Ago

Back in time…

16 April 2021

Band: VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR
Who: Highly acclaimed prog-rock band out
of Manchester fronted by Peter Hammill
Active: 1967–1972, 1975–1978, 2005–present / 12 albums

Album: STILL LIFE – 6th LP
Released: 15 April 1976 – 45 years ago

AllMusic / Steven McDonald wrote: “VDGG’s second step on the mid-’70s comeback trail
saw Peter Hammill attempting to meld the introspective and the cosmic throughout, though
this did not stop him from taking a dead run at a grandiose concept or two, the consequences of immortality on the title track, and the grand fate of humanity on the epic ‘Childlike Faith in Childhood’s End.’ The theme of humane cooperation informs the opening “Pilgrims,” while “La Rossa” is an epic tale of desire fulfilled (a story that would be concluded on Hammill’s solo album, Over). The true highlight, however, is the beautiful, pensive ‘My Room (Waiting for Wonderland),’ with its echoes of imagination and loss. Hammill did not achieve such a level
of painful beauty again until ‘This Side of the Looking Glass’ on Over.”
Score: 4/5.

Turn Up The Volume: Prog-rock with a heart and soul.

SUEDE Released Their Masterpiece Album ‘ DOG MAN STAR’ 25 Years Ago…

Classics from the past

10 October 2019

25 years ago, on 10 October 1994, British rockers SUEDE released their magnum opus DOG MAN STAR. Their second and final album with guitarist and co-songwriter Bernard Butler who left even before the final recordings were over. It’s a fabulous record with a series of outstanding songs that went much farther than the Britpop label. David Bowie and Roxy Music‘s glam and glitter influences were obvious but in the end it was a 100% Suede album in all its theatrical and melodramatic structure and resonance with Brett Anderson as the bona fide rock star in the middle. Definitely my favorite Suede LP.

All Music wrote: “As it stands, Dog Man Star is a strangely seductive record, filled with remarkable musical peaks, from the Bowie-esque stomp of “New Generation” to the stately ballads “The Wild Ones” and “Still Life,” which are both reminiscent of Scott Walker. And while Suede may choose to wear their influences on their sleeve, they synthesize them in a totally original way, making Dog Man Star a singularly tragic and romantic album.”
