THE PRETENDERS Topped The UK Album Charts 45 Years Ago Today With Their Debut LP

Back in time

10 February 2025

CHRISSIE HYNDE (73 now) and her PRETENDERS had
instant success in the UK with their Self-titled Debut LP.

It topped the Charts this day 45 years ago, on 10 February 1980.
It peaked at #9 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum, over
the ocean, 2 years later.

Sounds (UK music weekly) said at the time: “Its success, which should
be fairly apparent through the next few months, will be valued not through
hype and wildly enthusiastic pen-happy journalists but through a number
of strong album tracks.”

It featured 3 of their best singles ever.

‘STOB YOUR SOBBING’ By THE PRETENDERS – 1979

16 April 2023

Power pop heroes PRETENDERS fronted by the utterly charismatic
Chrissie Hynde released their tremendously infectious poppy debut
single STOP YOUR SOBBING in 1979, amidst the punk explosion
in the UK.

It was a cover. The original was written by kink Ray Davies about
a crying girlfriend he broke up with. It was released as a single in
1964 only in… South-Africa!

Guess what? Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde had a relationship and
a child. No sobbing for them, until they split up sometime later.

C’mon Chrissie.
