TALK TALK Released Their Debut Album ‘THE PARY’S OVER’ 40 Years Ago

Back in time

7 July 2022

Band: TALK TALK
Who: Legendary British passion-pop group, led
by the late great songwriter and voice Mark Hollis
(4 January 1955 – 25 February 2019).
Active: 1981-191 / 5 studio LPs

Anniversary album: THE PARTY’S OVER – debut LP
Released: 8 July 1982 – 40 years ago today
Score: #23 in the UK

Allmusic/Chris Woodstra said: “Talk Talk began life as a slavishly derivative,
Duran Duran-styled new romantic synth-pop band, as their debut, The Party’s Over,
clearly shows. Much of the album seems to attempt to recreate Duran Duran’s debut,
but even with their most blatant rip-offs, like the single “Talk Talk,” they do it with a
naïve charm that makes for some really enjoyable music, even if it isn’t particularly
innovative or groundbreaking.”
Score: 3.5/5.

TUTV: The first step to later songwriting greatness when they left their early
New Wave/New Romantics inspired vibes behind them. R.I.P. Mark Hollis.

TALK TALK Released Puzzling Final LP ‘LAUGHING STOCK’ 30 Years Ago Today

Back in time

16 September 2021

Band: TALK TALK
Who: Art rockers from London
led by the late great Mark Hollis
Active: 1981–1991 / 5 studio albums

Anniversary album: LAUGHING STOCK
Released: 16 September 1991 – 30 years ago today

AllMusic / Jason Ankeny said: “Virtually ignored upon its initial release, Laughing Stock continues to grow in stature and influence by leaps and bounds. Picking up where Spirit of
Eden left off, the album operates outside of the accepted sphere of rock to create music which is both delicate and intense; recorded with a large classical ensemble, it defies easy categorization, conforming to very few structural precedents… A work of staggering complexity and immense beauty, Laughing Stock remains an under-recognized masterpiece, and its echoes can be heard throughout much of the finest experimental music issued in its wake.”
Score: 5/5.

Turn Up The Volume: Puzzling. Totally puzzling. Really dark stuff.
Fascinating, bringing Scott Walker’s mood swings to mind.

TALK TALK Released Majestic Symphony ‘SPIRIT OF EDEN’ 30 Years Ago Today…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

16 September 2018

Band: TALK TALK

Album: SPIRIT OF EDEN – their fourth LP

Released: 16 September 1988 – 30 years ago

ALL MUSIC review: “Compare Spirit of Eden with any other previous release in the Talk Talk catalog, and it’s almost impossible to believe it’s the work of the same band, exchanging electronics for live, organic sounds and rejecting structure in favor of mood and atmosphere, the album is an unprecedented breakthrough, a musical and emotional catharsis of immense power…” – Score: 5/5 – Full review here

TURN UP THE VOlUME! says: Rather a grand, majestic symphony for
the twilight hours than a ‘traditional’ pop/rock record. Grand musicianship!
