CHRIS BAILEY was born Christopher James Mannix Bailey in The Colony of Kenya 65 years ago. He spent his childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and moved afterward to Australia. Three days ago he passed away. R.I.P.
A message on the group’s FB page broke the sad news: “It is with great pain in our hearts that we have to inform you about the passing of Chris Bailey, singer and songwriter of The Saints, on April the 9th 2022. Chris lived a life of poetry and music and stranded on a Saturday night.”
With his Brisbane schoolmates Ed Kuepper and Ivor Hay he formed legendary punk rock band THE SAINTS in the early 70s. Their debut LP I’M STRANDED (1977) is still an all-time landmark punk album with its rolling and roaring title track as their best-known cracker…
And here’s another great Chris Bailey moment to honor this great musician.
In 2003 he joined his friend Nick Cave for Bring It On. A towering goosebumps
single of the Bad Seeds‘ album Nocturama.

‘I’m Stranded’ by THE SAINTS
Released: 21 February 1977
ALL MUSIC wrote: “The Saints were to Australia what the Sex Pistols were to Britain and
the Ramones to America. Picking up the germ planted by the defunct Stooges, MC5, Velvet Underground, and New York Dolls, the Saints sparked the Far East punk rock movement
with a blasting, blistering, scorching sound no one had heard before. Moreover, The Saints
were blitzing the unsuspecting in their home of Brisbane in 1973, long before the Sex Pistols
or the Ramones had even begun.” – Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here.
TURN UP THE VOLUME says: So many didn’t/don’t know that these Aussie punks, led by the charismatic Chris Bailey were already producing rattling havoc before the Ramones let their hair grow and before Britpunk started.”
