Last September, Liverpool‘s psych-folk-pop-rock ramblers The Coral
released one of the best LPs of 2023 with Sea Of Mirrors. Second best
in Turn Up The Volume‘s end-of-the-year-list. On the same day they dropped
a 2nd one, named HOLY JOE’S ISLAND MEDICINE SHOW
For the latter’s standout track THE SINNER the band
just shared an enigmatic video. Watch below.
James Skelly (frontman) about the song: “I was trying to imagine
Calm With Horses as a noir with a soundtrack by a nameless Merseybeat
group that only exists in a half forgotten dream.”
TUTV about the song: If David Lynch would make a Spaghetti Western then
this sweet little pearl should be on the soundtrack. I’m sure he would like
it for the melancholic vibe, the ghostly sinner (his favorite sinner) and for
the echoing guitar sparks, thinking that it’s a song by romantic rockabilly
legend Chris Isaak (note: Lynch directed Isaak‘s Wicked Game video that
featured flashes from his 1990 Wild At Heart movie).
LYRICS
I go by the name of the Sinner
I move through the streets like a ghost
I used to work for the family
Now I’m running like a devil for the coast
Chorus
Do you laugh, do you cry?
Will you sing a lullaby
For the Sinner?
I’m the Sinner
A deal gone wrong, now I’m on the run
I’m leaving Dublin behind
I catch a boat at Carlingford
And sail for Liverpool tonight
Chorus
He said betrayal’s the greatest sin of all
And it’s impossible to forgive a friend
She died like silence as it falls
I loved his sister until the end
I’ll bide my time like a memory
And move in the shadows like a thief
One day I’ll return to the Dublin
And I’ll slit their throats while they sleep
