‘THIS IS MY TRUTH TELL ME YOURS’ – The Only No 1 UK Longplayer (So Far) For The MANICS This Day In 1998

27 September 2020

Welsh emotive rock legends MANIC STREET PREACHERS scored their one and only
No 1 UK album (so far) with the 1998 marvelous feat ‘THIS IS MY TRUTH TELL ME YOURS’, their fifth LP. It topped the Britannia charts starting 27 September 1998.
Twenty-two years ago.

With a little luck, they would have had several chart-topping longplayers as they had no less than five number two scores with Everything Must Go in 1996, Know Your Enemy
in 2001, Send Away The Tigers in 2007, Futurology in 2014, and their latest Resistance
Is Futile
in 2018. Pretty superb for a band that tackled social and all sort of unjust human issues with razor-sharp lyrics and a loud and clear sound. Not exactly birds and bees music for the masses.

James Dean Bradfield about TIMTTMY: “To be universal you’ve got to stain the consciousness of the people. You’ve got to dig out a truth that everybody knows, but they don’t want to hear, then tell it in a manner that’s so indignant, so beautiful, that they’ve got to accept it back into their lives again.”

Pitchfork about TIMTTMY : “They manage to infuse some quite dour lyrics with some of the most haunting melodies in rock this side of Radiohead. Bradfield and Moore seldom choose the obvious chords, arrangements and melodies, resulting in music that is heads- and- tails above almost any band on the planet.”

MANIC STREET PREACHERS – Welsh Legends’ Fifth Album ‘THIS IS MY TRUTH TELL ME YOURS’ Turns 20…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

12 September 2018

Band: MANIC STREET PREACHERS

Album: THIS IS MY TRUTH TELL ME YOURS
Their fifth studio LP and their first No 1 LP in the UK

Released: 14 September 1998 – 20 years ago

ALL MUSIC review: ” ‘If Everything Must Go’ found ‘Manic Street Preachers’ coping with Richey James’ sudden, unexplained disappearance, its follow-up, ‘This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours’, finds them putting the tragedy behind them and flourishing as a trio. Wisely, the group builds on the grand sound of ‘Everything Must Go’, creating a strangely effective fusion of string-drenched, sweeping arena rock and impassioned, brutally honest punk. Since the band never writes about anything less than major issues, whether it be political or personal, it’s appropriate that their music sounds as majestic and overpowering as their pretensions… it emphasizes the Manics’ uniqueness as one of the few bands of the ’90s that can deliver albums as bracing intellectually as they are sonically.” Score: 4/5 – Full review here

TURN UP THE VOLUME! says: With every LP The Manics turned more and more into intensely gripping-and-melancholic-sing-along-anthem-smiths. Glowing symphonies, human stories, and epic sounds touching countless souls. I clearly remember the concert they played in Brussels on 22 October 1998 in a small club (try-out for UK tour) and hearing those top tracks (see below) off the album live for the very first time. Eternal souvenir!…
