OASIS – Their Millionseller Album ‘(WHAT’S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY’ Topped UK Charts This Day 30 Years Ago

Significant longplayers from yesteryear

14 January 2026

Manchester‘s giants OASIS topped the UK Charts with their
2nd LP, millionseller (WHAT’S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? .

The record jumped to No. 1 on 14 January 1996, today 30 years ago,
for 10 weeks. The album sold a record breaking 345,000 copies in
its first week and stayed in the charts for a phenomenal 145 weeks.

It also led to the band’s breakthrough in the US, reaching #4
on the Billboard 200 and being certified 4× platinum by the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Rolling Stone Magazine wrote: “What’s the Story is more than a natural
progression, it’s a bold leap forward that displays significant musical and
personal growth. Tension and instability have been inherent traits of great
rock teams. For Oasis, the addition of shared genes gives their songs extra
impact and dimension.”

TUTV: I saw Oasis 28 times (so far), including
Wembley Stadion, London, on August 3. I guess
I’m a fan.

Noel Gallagher: “Those songs are just a privilege to be a part of. It’s like when
you do great gigs, you come off stage and say well it was a privilege to be at that
gig, regardless of my part in it.
‘Wonderwall’, ‘Don’t Look Back’ and ‘Champagne
Supernova’ when I play them sometimes I think ‘wow it is a privilege to be a part
of this.”

Liam Gallagher at the time: “Without my voice he’d still be ironing
Clint Boons knickers.”
A reference to Noel’s past as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets.

OASIS Released Their First No 1 Hit Single In The UK ‘SOME MIGHT SAY’ This Day In 1995

Top singles from the past

24 April 2025

OasissOME

30 years ago today, on 24 April 1995, Manchester‘s rock kings OASIS released
SOME MIGHT SAY from their million-seller LP (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
It was their 6th single and first No. 1 in the UK.

The single was also the last to feature all five original members,
as drummer Tony McCarroll was fired shortly after its release.

The sleeve artwork was created by Brian Cannon. It was shot on the
disused platform of Cromford, a railway station in Derbyshire, England.

This is how cool rock ‘n’ roll clips look like.

Their Top Of The Pops appearance was definitely cool too.

THE KILLERS With Own Version Of Artwork Of OASIS Masterpiece (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?

Los Angeles‘ mega rock stars THE KILLERS played some big arena shows in London
last week. In between, they hit town for some fun, like creating their own version of
the artwork of OASIS‘ 2nd LP, mastertroke (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?

They went to Berwick Street in Soho, the same street
where the photo shoot for Oasis‘ album took place.

The Killers‘ charismatic frontman Brandon Flowers posted himself in
the middle of the street with the now boarded-up Selectadisc Record
Store
to his left.

In the caption on their Instagram account, the band wrote: IYKYK, which stands for
(If You Know) You Know (???) in the same white font as on the original LP cover.
