BRONSKI BEAT And NEIL TENNANT And Remixer SUPERCHUMBO Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of Timeless Hit ‘WHY?’

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

9 August 2024

Legendary British queer dance-pop act BRONSKI BEAT‘s keyboardist/percussionist
Larry Steinbachek passed away in 2017, and Steve Bronski, the group’s cofounder in
2021, leaves the now 63-year old Jimmy Sommerville as the one original member.

The band’s biggest hit is, definitely, Smalltown Boy (almost 400 million streams on Spotify) but they had some more top crackers like the irresistibly swirling disco stomper WHY?

On September 14 it will be 40 years since that timeless gem was released.

For the occasion, the song is remixed by DJ/Producer/Remixer
Superchumbo
and features Pet Shop Boys‘ voice Neil Tennant.

Sommerville about the remix and Tennant‘s vocals: “I’ve known Tom [Stephan, aka Superchumbo] for a good few years now, and when I asked him if he’d like to do a remix of “Why?,” he said yes straight away. The song is a part of his story. I was so moved when he shared that story with me. The lyric is our shared experience, as it is for so many others… And forty years later, the lyric still tells the story of LGBTQi+…. the hate, the violence, the discrimination, the imprisonment and state-sanctioned murder of those who dare to be their true selves, and it’s happening somewhere right now as I write this…

I was fucking whooping like a banshee round my kitchen when Tom told me Neil would like to contribute! To speak the lyrics of “Why?” and to hear Tom’s musical reworking of the track is fucking mind-blowing. So to hear Neil, one of our greatest pop lyricists, speaking my words… It brings it into the here and now and also retains its history with my original vocal. I genuinely felt moved.”

Wake up people,
and let’s wonder WHY
there are still so many
homophobic idiots
around after 40 years.

Band: THE DAMNED FEW
Who: Hit team from The Netherlands playing pure rock’n’roll
with a twist of garage rock, blues and psychedelics from the 60’s
and 70’s, but on steroids.
FFO: Rival Sons, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless,
Dorothy and Black Sabbath
.

New single: WHY
From upcoming EP Black Blooded Woman

Turn Up The Volume: If the late great blues heroine Janis Joplin
would front famous Dutch metal band Within Temptation it would
sound really similar to this hefty haymaker. Titanic, bombastic and
sky-scraping.

Towering guitars, towering tune, and terrifically towering vocals.
My oh my. Metallic blues agony in howling motion. A wall-breaking
belter! Giant score!

Press play and go ballistic…

Liverpool’s OYA PAYA Regretful On New Groovy Single ‘WHY?’…

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

Turn Up The Volume featured colorful and multifaceted trio out of Liverpool before. Their musical vibe ranges from bluesy weirdness to funky hip-hop, all delivered with a twisted touch. New single WHY? is an equally cool humdinger yet the song’ story is less fun. The band’s drummer Ashwin was recently forced to move back to his native Singapore.

Facing this disappointment it spurred the friends into action: “We made use of the only
thing that still connected us (the internet) and started piecing tunes together across continents. It’s meant to resonate with anybody who’s ever felt lonely and isolated. It’s a convoluted way of asking life “why” does it have to be so difficult? The fruits of our labour have helped us understand that it’s not impossible.”

WHY? moves from smooth to groovy. From reflective to dancey. Underneath the playful beat you feel the pain and sorrow about losing a close pal and band mate. But the band’s thoughts go even further than that. People just can’t choose where they want to live. Me, myself and I nationalism is back in the Western world for some years now, unfortunately, getting stronger and stronger. No wonder the eternal question Why? returns on repeat. Here’s no answer but the hopeful spirit creates a little bit of light…
