PAUL McCARTNEY And WINGS Topped The US Album Charts With ‘WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND’ Today 50 Years Ago

Significant longplayers from yesteryear

26 April 2026

PAUL McCARTNEY and WINGS had a 10-year run, from 1971 until 1981.
Macca‘s then-wife, Linda Eastman (1941-1998) was the band’s keyboardist.
They released 7 LPs.

One of them was WINGS AT THE SPEED OF SOUND. It topped the US album charts, today 50 years ago, on 26 April 1976. Actually their fourth consecutive LP to do so. In the UK, the record peaked at #2.

In response to critics who believed Wings was merely a vehicle for Paul McCartney, the album featured every member of the band taking lead vocals on at least one song, and two songs from the album are written or co-written by band members other than the McCartneys.

Back sleeve

Melody Maker (legendary British music weekly) said: “This is not an album that hits
you with the sustained power of Band on the Run or Venus and Mars. Much good music
then on an album that will engender fierce comparisons with the past two albums but will increase the growing worldwide appeal of Wings.

PAUL MCCARTNEY – New Docu ‘MAN ON THE RUN’ Coming Up

16 January 2026

MAN ON THE RUN is a new documentary featuring rare unreleased music and footage from PAUL MCCARTNEY. It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado last August.

Now it’ll get its premiere on streaming TV, on Prime Video, on February 27th.

Man on the Run takes viewers on an intimate journey through Paul McCartney‘s extraordinary life following the break-up of The Beatles and the formation of
Wings with his wife, Linda.

Through unprecedented access to previously unseen footage and rare archival
materials, the documentary captures Paul’s transformative post-Beatles era
through a uniquely vulnerable lens.

WINGS – Macca & Co Released Their 4th LP ‘VENUS AND MARS’ 50 Years Ago Today

Longplayers from yesteryear

27 May 2025

In 1971, a year after the Fab Four split up, yesterday beatle PAUL McCARTNEY formed WINGS, featuring his wife Linda on keyboards, and former Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine.

Their 4th LP, titled VENUS AND MARS came out on 27 May 1975, today 50 years ago.
It followed their foremost album Band On The Run, that was released the year before.

It hit the #1 spot in the UK, US, New Zealand, Canada, Norway and Spain.

The record’s cover, which Paul summed up as “a package that would be nice to get, and also something recognizable” was photographed by Linda, depicting two billiard balls in a black background, which are yellow and red to fit the colours of the planets Venus and Mars.

AllMusic said: “One of McCartney’s more consistent listens, even though it’s possible to scan the song listing after several listens and not recognize any song outside of “Listen to What the Man Said” and the opening medley by title.” Score: 3/5.

For most critics and fans (including me)
Radiohead‘s 3rd longplayer is their best.

Mojo wrote: “Others may end up selling more, but in 20 years’ time
I’m betting OK Computer will be seen as the key record of 1997, the
one to take rock forward instead of artfully revamping images and
song-structures from an earlier era.”

‘MRS. VANDEBILT’ By WINGS – 45 Years Ago…

Knockouts from the past

27 July 2019

Today 45 years ago, on 27 July 1974 the best-selling artist ever PAUL MCCARTNEY & his WINGS hit the top spot of the albums chart in the UK with their third LP, bestseller ‘BAND ON THE RUN’. One of the highlights was/is the resistlessly catchy ‘MRS. VANDEBILT‘. The track was released as a single in Continental Europe and Australia, but weirdly not in the US and the UK.

C’mon sing along ‘Ho, Hey Ho’…
