THE JAM – Legendary British Mods Released Their Raging Debut Single ‘IN THE CITY’ 40 Years Ago…

quotefield-kopie

Forty years ago – on 22 April 1977 – boiling three-piece THE JAM released their smashing debut single IN THE CITY. It was the British mods’ fiercest punk moment and the start of
a brilliant journey which saw the band evolving spectacularly, resulting in several top LP’s. The successful UK trio broke up in 1982 when angry young man, frontman and fabulous singer/songwriter Paul Weller, looking for other challenges, called it a day and started, after his The Style Council project, a tremendous solo career. And the iconic Modfather
still makes amazing records today (his last three albums are top!). The Jam were and still are one of my favorite bands from that glorious era of inventive teenage musicians using classic rock and roll, soul and blues to create something fresh, brisk and exciting out of it for their generation. Here’s that first cracker, still sounding razor-sharp and furious…

THE AFGHAN WHIGS will release new album IN SPADES on 5th of May via Sub Pop
Records
. The record is described in a press statement as: “a searing and soulful rock
effort that emphasizes its pop instincts while contrasting with the seductive themes found throughout. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting its halls, ‘In Spades’ casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery.”
After sharing impressive first single DEMON IN PROFILE a few weeks ago here’s second track ARABIAN HEIGHTS. A highly ardent stroke pushed by an ongoing groove that creeps slowly under your skin…

Wayward Punk Legends THE SLITS Gave Motown Hit A Trippy Dimension…

Legendary female punks THE SLITS formed in 1976 and after some line-up changes it was clear that the remaining trio of Ari-Up, Viv Albertine and Palmolive had no intention to jump on the punk train. I know, they were part of the same circle of young, noisy brats like Keith Levene, Johnny Rotten Lydon, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones among others and they toured with several big punk bands but they definitely were very different in sound & image than all those noisy boys gangs. They didn’t play fast, loud and furious, but developed their proper DIY sound around hyperkinetic rhythms, stripped to the bone dub reggae and weird funk patterns. If you never heard them check their sparkling 1979 debut LP CUT, featuring Neneh Cherry and produced by reggae virtuoso Dennis Bovell here. And this is what happened when they covered a mega soul hit…

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
Originally written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966.
The 1968 version by Marvin Gaye is the most famous rendition of this fabulous song…

ANTON NEWCOMBE – The ‘Record Store Day UK 2017 Champion’ Is Making Art Everyday…

Vibes that thrills us in a way we want to scream out loud…

shoutout

Sometimes I wonder if the days in Berlin count 48 instead of 24 hours because the longtime psychedelia explorer Anton Newcombe who lives in Germany’s capital for
some years now is unquestionably the most productive and creative artist on this
planet. He’s the mastermind of The Brian Jonestown Massacre (four albums in the last
four years), the inspiring soul of several collaborations and the producer of many like-minded musicians. His motto is ‘MAKE ART EVERYDAY’ and that is exactly what the Californian 24/7 sonic addict does. Experience here two new trippy works in progress…

Man þegar þeir stoppuðu tíma?

As part of Anton‘s official involvement with the 10th birthday (next Friday, 22 April) of Record Store Day UK, he will re-release The Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s 1991 Pol Pot’s Pleasure Penthouse LP for the very first time on vinyl. Years ago, the album was only released on cassette format (limited to 500 copies) via Burger Records. The music was recorded back in 1990/91 at Newcombe’s home in San Francisco. “I used to make up songs everyday on the 4 track just to teach myself how to write. I understood what I liked about music, I just didn’t know how to pull it out of the ether and bring them into being. I would make demo tapes and share them with friends, endless demo tapes, I would send them to magazines and record labels with no return address, just for the fuck of it. It was never my intention to actually release this music. For instance if I came up with a country song, I would finish it just to learn more about writing. I didn’t want to be in a classic country group, this is a document of my learning process. Good times…”

IGGY POP – Brand New Stripped To The Blues Bone Track… ‘ASSHOLE BLUES’

Fresh sonic vibes…

7sevenmix

Out of the blue here’s a brand new IGGY POP track. It was recorded for Jacuzzi Boys’ Mag Mag label’s flexi disc series and will be out just one day before Record Store Day on April 21. Speaking to Rolling Stone Magazine the Godfather of punk said about the new release: “I wrote a blues song about an asshole who’s out to get me. It’s full of negative energy. Listen at you own risk. It’s fun to play the blues.” Raw, original sounding blues it is, definitely inspired by blues pioneer legend Robert Johnson. Mean and to the bone…

Yes, Iggy Pop sounds like the ghost of Robert Johnson (8 May 1911 – 16 August 1938)…
