‘Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)’
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND
Released: October 1978
Tenth longplayer
ULTIMATE ROCK CLASSIC wrote: “After Beefheart and old friend Frank Zappa made an album together (‘Bongo Fury’) in 1975, the Captain recorded an LP called ‘Bat Chain Puller’ for Zappa’s label. But a legal dust-up with Zappa’s manager resulted in Zappa withholding the master tapes to the record. So Beefheart, with yet another new Magic Band, re-recorded the songs and released them as ‘Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)’ in 1978. It was his best album since 1970’s ‘Lick My Decals Off, Baby’ and the start of a creative rebirth, following 1974’s double duds ‘Unconditionally Guaranteed’ and ‘Bluejeans & Moonbeams’) that lasted until his retirement in the mid-’80s. (Incidentally, the original Zappa version of the album eventually came out in 2012.”
TURN UP THE VOLUME: One word = genial.
