TODAY’S YESTERDAY ALBUM – ‘I Just Can’t Stop It ‘ – Debut Longplayer By… THE BEAT

Remarkable albums from the past…

‘I Just Can’t Stop It’ by THE BEAT
Released: 1 May 1980 – debut LP

ALL MUSIC wrote: “‘I Just Can’t Stop It’ was a late arrival onto the checker- boarded scene, the Specials, Madness and the Selecter had all beat the (English) Beat to the punch, but luckily this wasn’t a race. Besides, the band had already primed the pump with a trio of Top 10 singles – the double A-sided ‘Tears of a Clown’/’Ranking Full Stop’, ‘Hands Off She’s Mine’ and ‘Mirror in the Bathroom,’ their debut album followed hard on ‘Mirror’s heels, picking up the latter two songs and ‘Full Stop’ to boot. The album remained on the British charts for a whopping eight months, eventually peaking at Number Three. Time has not diminished its glory, the songs remain hugely as their continued inclusion in the band’s offshoot’s repertoire have proved.” Score: 5/5 – Full review here.

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: It was a red-hot party album then and still
is a red-hot party album now. C’mon, activate your dancing feet, folks!

JOHNNY MARR – Arresting Third Solo Album ‘CALL THE COMET’ Out Now…

OnRepeat

17 June 2018

Johnny

Living legend JOHNNY MARR just released his third solo album, entitled
CALL THE COMET.  His best accomplishment so far to Turn Up The Volume‘s
ears. True to his  ‘never do things the same twice‘ motto Marr went for a new,
more venturesome sound.  A gloomy modern-day glam rock stomp (especially:
Rise / Tracers / Bug and My Eternal) yet, despite the troubled times we live in,
with a hopeful look into the future.

Absorbing electricity with some contemplative reflections in-between (Hi Hello /
Spiral Cities / A Different Gun). Arresting richness on many levels. I’ll have Johnny
Marr‘s multi-layered ingeniousness, sonically and lyrically, on repeat many days
to come…

TODAY’S YESTERDAY ALBUM – ‘The House Of Love’ – By THE HOUSE OF LOVE

Remarkable albums from the past…

The House Of Love by THE HOUSE OF LOVE
Released: July 1990

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Following the combination of indie success and massive hype
leading up to the band’s first album proved to be too much for the original lineup,
with Bickers leaving after a series of problems and pressures once the group signed
to Fontana. Yet rarely has a fraught series of recording sessions resulted in something
so flat-out stunning. The House of Love’s second self-titled album in a row remains
something of a high-water mark in what can loosely be termed U.K. post-punk.”
Score: 4.5/5 – Full review here.

Gothic Twilight Duo SOCIAL STATION Turns Gloomy On New Cinematic Single ‘TRY (CROSS MY HEART)…

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

14 June 2018

Band: SOCIAL STATION (Washington D.C., US)

Who: “With a passion for analogue synths, hypnotic guitar, and undeniable melancholic
vocals, ‘Social Station’ started originally as a solo project in 2013 by singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist Paul Todd. With the addition of Alexander Minx on drums the duo released debut full-length Our Pleasure Of Solitude in 2016.’

Track: TRY (CROSS MY HEART) – this brand new single is a collaborative effort
by Paul Todd and classical musician Jacob Sebastian on bass.

Score: Try (Cross My Heart) feels and sounds like a troubled love reflection, full of doubt and fear. A cloudy symphony for the twilight hours. Heavy-hearted, yet with some spark of hope at the end of the day/night. The cinematic orchestration of the sad song adds soulful drama to the whole experience and so does the accompanying, vintage ‘black and white’ movie sequence of the video clip. 17-Year Old Singer/Songwriter GEORGIA FERN Demonstrates Stellar Talent On Debut Album ‘PERFECT ON PAPER’…

Sonic vibes that thrill us in a way we want to scream out loud…

14 June 2018

GEORGIA FEAR is a 17-year old singer-songwriter from Carmarthen, Wales. She started writing songs from the age of 9. Last March she released her remarkable debut longplayer, titled PERFECT ON PAPER. A truly inventive and highly varied collection of vivacious songs. Musically she mixes all sort of genres. Pop, folk, country, rock, jazz, soul, roots, actually any vibe that suits her lifelike musings. Here’s a truly gifted, outspoken, young artist with a particular vox reminding me of a young Kate Bush and most of all she has an ingenious vision and the fitting intellect for composing compelling songs. Assisted by experienced musicians she demonstrates her potential big time on this debut record. Different moods, different stories, different tones. Her sonic and lyric imagination is stunning. Yes, ladies and gents, Georgia Fern is a solid gold songsmith in the making. Find out why for yourself right here…

BOB DYLAN Released His 18th Album ‘STREET-LEGAL’ 40 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

13 June 2018

Artist: BOB DYLAN

Album: STREET-LEGAL

Released: 15 June 1978 – 40 years ago

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Arriving after the twin peaks of Blood on the Tracks and Desire,
Street Legal seemed like a disappointment upon its 1978 release, and it still seems
a little subpar years after its release. Perhaps that’s because Bob Dylan was uncertain
himself, not just writing a set of songs with no connecting themes, but replacing the
sprawl of the Rolling Thunder Revue with a slick, professional big band, featuring a
horn section and several backing vocalists.”
– Score 3.5/5 – Full review here.

TURN UP THE VOLUME says: An average Bob Dylan is still a great one
compared to countless other singer/songwriters’ work.
