NEW ORDER Released Their Fifth Album ‘TECHNIQUE’ 30 Years Ago…

Going back in sonic history looking for memorable albums…

29 January 2019

Band: NEW ORDER

Album: TECHNIQUE – the band’s fifth LP

Released: 30 January 1989 – 30 years ago

ALL MUSIC wrote: “Tastes and sounds were changing quickly in the late ’80s, which prompted New Order’s most startling transformation yet — from moody dance-rockers to, well, moody acid-house mavens. After the band booked a studio on the island hotspot of Ibiza, apparently not knowing that it was the center of the burgeoning house music craze, New Order’s sure instincts for blending rock and contemporary dance resulted in another confident, superb LP. ‘Technique’ was the group’s most striking production job, with the single “Fine Time” proving a close runner-up to “Blue Monday” as the most extroverted dance track in the band’s catalog… Placed in the perfect position to deliver the definitive alternative take on house music, the
band produced another classic record.”
Full review here. Score: 4.5/5

Turn Up The Volume! says: New Order was like a musical chameleon evolving from their early gloomy post-punk days to this Ibiza dance extravaganza. With flair and spot on.

BEASTIE BOYS Released Fulminating ‘SABOTAGE’ Single 25 Years Ago Today…

SABOTAGE is definitely one of the best BEASTIE BOYS slams ever. A scathing rapcore
blast with Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz‘s screaming hysterically ‘Oh my god, it’s a mirage I’m tellin’ y’all, it’s sabotage‘ over a rock injected rap blow-up. It was released 25 years ago today, on 28 January 1994 as the first single from their fourth longplayer ILL COMMUNICATION. Funny thing is Ad-Rock revealed afterward that “ the track was recorded as an instrumental, and the vocals weren’t added until two weeks before the record was completed. It was the last song on ‘Ill Communication’ to be finished.” The hilarious accompanying video was directed by Spike Jonze. A parody of the 70s American macho TV crime series.

Toronto’s RUNNING RED LIGHTS Look Back – Here’s New Affectional Single ‘CALLS OF PRUDENCE’…

Relaxing vibes for the laziest day of the week…

27 January 2019

Toronto’s quartet RUNNING RED LIGHTS, centred around the duo of vocalist/guitarist Scarlett Flynn and drummer/guitarist Kevin Howley have an idyllic new single out called CALLS OF PRUDENCE. A delicate, affectional and nostalgic musing written by Flynn. Its romantic, retrospect feel and gripping vocals will make your thoughts drift away to your
own past. Also the overall soulful tone and the saxophone sequence create a Sade like
tenderness with a touch of Portishead‘s moodiest moments. Evocative accomplishment.

“It was penned during a moment where I felt myself longing for the vibrancy of youth, the thrill of experiencing things for the first time. One day, I was feeling particularly nostalgic and found myself reflecting on the days when I was young and could get blissfully drunk without having anyone or anything to answer to, without regard for the time that I was wasting” says Flynn.

27 January 2019

The great late British singer/songwriter IAN DURY and his BLOCKHEADS scored a No 1
in the UK 40 years ago. HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK topped the singles chart
on 27 January 1979. The anti-violence song was a stand alone single written by Dury and his band’s leader Chaz Jankel. A remarkably solid gold composition with an awesome flow, snappy chorus and great lyrics. It became a million-seller over the years. Ian Dury was on holiday in Cannes, France the day the single landed on number one and was at the beach when the hotel staff brought him a bottle of champagne and told him the good news. Here’s that classic diamond…

In the deserts of Sudan
And the gardens of Japan
From Milan to Yucatan
Every woman, every man
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
Hit me! Hit me!
Je t’adore, ich liebe dich,
Hit me! hit me! hit me!
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
Hit me slowly, hit me quick.
Hit me! Hit me! Hit me!
In the wilds of Borneo
And the vineyards of Bordeaux
Eskimo, Arapaho
Move their body to and fro.
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
Hit me! Hit me!
Das ist gut! C’est fantastique!
Hit me! hit me! hit me!
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
It’s nice to be a lunatic.
Hit me! Hit me! Hit me!
Hit me! Hit me! Hit me!
In the dock of Tiger Bay
On the road to Mandalay
From Bombay to Santa Fe
Over hills and far away
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
Hit me! Hit me!
C’est si bon, mm? Ist es nicht?
Hit me! hit me! hit me!
Hit me with your rhythm stick.
Two fat persons, click, click, click.
Hit me! Hit me! Hit me!
Hit me! Hit me! Hit me!

Nevermind Nirvana Here’s Sonic Trash Youth… PEUK

PEUK – Charlatan, Ghent, Belgium – 25 January 2019

After a series of rip-roaring gigs last year and an explosive EP, it was crystal clear why rowdy Belgian newcomers PEUK, a blusterous in your face trio led by youthful primal screamer and emotive songwriter Nele became the talk of the town. Remember Sonic Youth? Remember Nirvana? Remember early Hole? Well, Peuk is a scorching three-headed dragon combining all the mad rage, blazing anger and reality anxiety those
three aforementioned bands were adored for by troubled hearts & souls worldwide.

Yesterday the band released their self-titled, blistering debut LP and played a glorious
big bang gig in Turn Up The Volume‘s hometown to celebrate the newborn. As well live
as on record this noisy threesome’s intensity equals a fire-spewing volcano with psychic problems. Mental conditions such as exorcism, catharsis and soul-purification come to mind when you see Nele giving it all in her zone of her own on the stage. Totally arresting! Fully bewitching! Smells like blood-curdling teen spirit. Here’s an idea of Peuk Live

And what about their debut album, I hear you ask.
Here are the keywords: Melodic trash / Barbed wire punk / Riotous grunge / Fierce body-piercing howls / Kim Gordon’s coolness / Courtney’s sneering and spitting / Mind-crashing drums / Furious bass / Fast slow / Quit, loud / Clamorous tumult / Emotional outbursts.

With all that information, you’re
sonically armed to meet the beast.

London’s Post Punks CROWS Share Steamy Single ‘CHAIN OF BEING’ From Upcoming Debut LP…

Daily fuel to load your sonic batteries…

25 January 2019

After listening over and over again to their two hair-rising 2016 EP’s Cold Comfort  and Unwelcome Light and seeing them play a memorable club gig in my hometown
that same year (review here) London’s rowdy post punks CROWS are finally back with
fresh dynamite. They have signed to Balley Records, the label run by boisterous Idles frontman Joe Talbot that will launch Crows‘s debut album SILVER TONGUES on 22 March. Ahead of it here’s first single CHAIN OF BEING . A relentlessly drums driven missile with
a terrifically heavy guitar charged fanfare growing nastier and heftier with every second while frontman James Fox‘ voice rolls all over it. Impressive and turbulent stroke. Here we go…
