This day 40 years ago, on 19 May 1979, British prog pop rockers SUPERTRAMP, co-founded by their two chief singer/songwriters Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies, topped the US Albums Chart with their sixth album BREAKFAST IN AMERICA. It was recorded a year before in Los Angeles, won two Grammy Awards and went quadruple platinum – more than 4 million copies sold – in America. It went to #3 in their native country and scored big time all over Europe.

Fantastic enduring songs from Supertramp’s founder and voice, Roger Hodgson. He gave us all the hits off the album – the title track, Breakfast in America, along with The Logical Song, and Take the Long Way Home. His other songs on the album are Child of Vision and Lord is it Mine. Many people are not aware that although Roger and Rick shared writing credit, they actually wrote separately and sang their own songs. For anyone who was or is a Supertramp fan, you’ve got to see Roger and his current band live in concert. His voice is incredible and his band sounds even better than Supertramp in their heyday. If you go to only one concert this year, let it be Roger Hodgson. Check this out – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fVQ2Rq2U0o
1/ As a teenager I saw Supertramp playing in Brussels at Forest-National 10 October 1977 (‘Even in the Quietest Moments’ tour), that same night after the concert I met my first wife. 2/ Then many years later (1995) I saw Roger Hudson several nights in a row as part of ‘Best Of The Proms’ shows in Antwerp. I remember his voice was fabulous every single night of the series of concerts (10 or 12, can’t remember well) although I must add he didn’t need to perform but for about 35 minutes, so we got all the hits night after night.
OMG what a sleepy Sunday mistake I made there. Of course it’s ROY HODGSON not Hudson. Need to stop to do three things at the same time (one eye on the PC, one on the TV and talking to someone at the same time, especially on a Sunday)
Breakfast in America. A classic one. The songs included in this album are timeless, I’m never tired to listen to them. We have a huge opportunnity to celebrate this anniversary with the very Roger Hodgson in one of his astonishing shows worldwide. Don’t miss it if you were a Supertramp fan you won’t to miss it. Roger Hodgson’ best performances I ever saw were back in 1995. I saw him about 10/12 nights in a row when he played the ‘Best Of The Proms’ in Antwerp, Belgium. Stunning voice, magical songs.
