SM For The Rich – Mean Machine BODY HORROR Slashes Merciless On Debut Single ‘THE GIMP’S GIMP’

19 April 2021

Band: BODY HORROR
Who: Up and coming noisemakers
from London.

Single: THE GIMP’S GIMP – debut single

Score: A chainsaw intro followed by manic drum thwacks
and a frenetic bass force, and a bit later a nightmarish voice
joining the freaked-out get-together. All this brain-breaking
stuff happens in under a minute. Hallelujah!

From there on this fanatical bulldozer tests your stereo’s flexibility
with furibund guitars going mental. Far-out funk for the wicked.

And as far as I can detect this hammering haymaker is about a sort
of take control sadomasochism for the rich. Damn you, bastards!

Hail hail mean machine Body Horror.

Alert your neighborhood before you press play…

GEORGE MICHAEL Topped UK Charts 35 Years Ago With ‘A DIFFERENT CORNER’

Top singles from the past…

19 April 2021

Artist: GEORGE MICHAEL
Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou on 25 June 1963
and passed away on 25 December 2016, only 53

Single: A DIFFERENT CORNER

Michael about the song: “I felt like shit. I went in and recorded exactly
the way I felt, and that’s the way it sounds. It was partly Wham! and partly
the end of a relationship. It was the farthest I’d ever fallen, and in a very
short period of time. I had to get rid of it somehow, I had to write about it.
That’s a really perverse side that I’m sure a lot of writers have -‘I feel like shit,
but maybe I’ll get a good song out of it.’”

Score: No 1 in the UK, in Canada, Portugal, Norway and… Zimbabwe (fact!)

Turn Up the Volume: Cheesy? Yes, but one of the best cheesiest songs
I ever heard. I’m sure The Bee Gees loved this magnificent ballad.

R.I.P. Michael…

WAKE UP World – It’s Time For A Change With Screamy Trio LOBSTERBOMB

Daily electricity to load your batteries…

19 April 2021

Band: LOBSTERBOMB
Who: A fresh new band from the Berlin underground.
Formed in a Berlin basement in 2020 by Nico Rosch, Vik
Chi and Crayon Jones
, Lobsterbomb makes raw, energetic
and danceable indie garage rock.

Single: WAKE UP

About: “It’s is a song about overcoming the frustrations of being
trapped in a monotonous and unfulfilling routine and overcoming
the pressures society places on us to live our lives in a certain way.
The song has an urgent energy that reflects the need to change
ourselves and the world around us in a positive way, for a more
sustainable and contented future.”

Score: Third smack. Third screaming triumph. As Turn Up
The Volume
wrote when debut single Yes Yes Yeah came
on the stereo this hit and run trio combines Bikini Kill‘s rough
outcries, L7‘s detonating gusto, and B-52‘s peppery liveliness.

WAKE UP WORLD! TIME FOR A CHANGE!
Give Lobsterbomb megaphones, they will
show us the way.

Funky Post Punk Firework – 4,000,000 TELEPHONES Back In Town With ‘GOATS’

Daily electricity to load your batteries…

18 April 2021

Band: 4,000,000 TELEPHONES
Who: Post punks from the 80s, back after 35 years with
four original members. Now a sextet creating a fascinating
melée of musical styles that delighted and baffled by equal
measure.

Pick: GOATS – first single of new, forthcoming album, originally
recorded in 1986 as part of a collection of unreleased material.

Score: Veterans? Come on. This experienced sextet moves and
grooves with the fervent force of a young mad for it squad. Goats
pounds like Talking Heads punked-up, like Gang of Four pumped-up,
like A Certain Ratio shacked-up. Hello? Feel the heat? Wowzah! Funky
as bloody hell. Get up, stand up and shake up your booty.

Right here, right now…

Creepy Experience – New KURT COBAIN Song Not Written By The Late Icon

18 April 2021

A new song by the late great Nirvana frontman KURT COBAIN?
Not written by him? Yep, and it feels otherworldly and creepy.

The song titled DROWNED IN THE SUN was written with AI (Artificial Intelligence)
software. But also new songs by the late Amy Winehouse and other deceased artists
(all at the age of 27) were made that way.

Toronto organisation Over The Bridge is the initiator of the project – focusing on the importance of mental health support – and created a compilation of new songs in the
style of musicians who died at the age of 27 like Cobain who passed away 27 years ago, early April. What about the legality? Royalties? His widow Courtney Love and daughter Frances? And the fans? Many of them reacted furiously on social media.

The big question: where will it all end?

And the weirdest thing is that it’s a top song.

Discover The Shadowy World Of Los Angeles Dreamers MIHI NIHIL – New LP Out

18 April 2021

Band: MIHI NIHIL (Mee-Kee Nee-Keel)
Who: An emerging band from Los Angeles, Mihi,
a former New York City Opera singer is backed by
three self-taught rockers.
Influences: Early Radiohead, The Clash, Ennio Morricone,
Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Neal Young, and The Pixies

Album: MIHI NIHIL
Released: 15 April 2021.
Order and stream info here.

Info: Mihi Nihil bridge the past and present musical zeitgeists.
Their music feels at once mysterious and familiar, as a fog curling
heavily around the listener only to be cut through by rays from the sun
.

Turn Up The Volume says: This time the cliché is totally true. This affecting
record grows on you with every spin (I need a couple of more too). Not that
it’s a sort of free-jazz exploration. It’s a puzzling one. At times melodramatic
(Gold / Ticking Clocks), one time vibrant à la Nina Hagen (I Eat You), but most
of all shadowy, hazy and meditative (Space Invader / Verberation / Falling Star /
Who Do You Think You Are? /Ticking Clocks
).

Mihi’s voice is the sparkling star in the middle! Balancing between Maria
McKee
and Kate Bush, while the electrical band produces a fitting, darksome
and Cure-esque orchestration. Emotive experience all the way.

Key singles: Be There / Falling Star

THE CHARLATANS Released Ninth Album ‘SIMPATICO’ 15 Years Ago

18 April 2021

Band: THE CHARLATANS (West Midlands, UK)
Active since 1988 / 13 albums (so far)

Album: SIMPATICO
– 9th LP
Released: 17 April 2006 – 15 years ago

BBC Music wrote: “When you’ve been around as long as the Charlatans, you
have to keep trying new things or your sound can become tired. Simpatico, though,
is an experiment too far. A new direction was needed, but that direction should not
have been a musical journey round the Caribbean. It’s time to set sail for home
and go back to the drawing board.”

Turn Up The Volume: Expect for a couple of top singles,
the album was anything but top.
