Filipino Rock Heroes THE ITCHYWORMS Enthrall With Amplified Pop Earworm ‘PANIC IN MY MIND’

New striking strokes

27 March 2023

Band: THE ITCHYWORMS
Who: Four Western-rock-inspired musicians from the Philippines who started their journey back in 1996. They are not only heroes in their own country but they also have a lot of fans in the US where they just started a new tour. So far they recorded/released 5 LPs and several EPs.

New single: PANIC IN MY MIND

“The track encapsulates the never-ending thoughts of a fairy tale ending with that
special someone. Incorporating a retro pop rock melody into a groovy bass line completes its upbeat and classic sound, while the accompaniment perfectly layers in lyrics that talk about pining over someone in a world where they are the anomaly.”

Turn Up The Volume never featured pop/rock artists from the Philippines here on
the blog. But we don’t have boundaries whatsoever as long as the music excites us. This happens here with the famous Filipino rock heroes The Itchyworms and their new amplified power pop stroke.

Panic In My Mind‘s strumming drive and vitalizing chorus have an instant effect on your hungry ears. The melancholic vocals/harmonies add a sensitive still-in-love touch while glistening guitars and a funky bass riff combine for a perky vibe. So, no reason to panic,
all you music junkies out there, this tit-top tune will play in your head for a while.

Tune in.
Tap your feet.
Enjoy.

Gone But Not Forgotten – JOHN TOVEY Aka FAT GADGET (1956-2002)

Great artists from the past

27 March 2023

Artist: FAD GADGET
Who: The stage name of London’s
post-punk maverick Frank Tovey.

Albums: 4 under the Fad Gadget moniker
and 6 under his own name.
Full discography: here.

For all intents and purposes, Frank Tovey was best known as the man behind Fad Gadget, one of the most significant cult acts of the post-punk boom. As Fad Gadget, Tovey and his revolving door of conspirators released several singles and four full-length albums that stretched the boundaries of pop music during the late ’70s and early ’80s. And after Tovey started making records under his own name in the mid-’80s, he continued to remain as unpredictable as ever, working within the realms of Cajun, blues, and folk, in addition to furthering his journey into experimental electronics. – All Music.

Tovey was born on 8 September 1956. He died of
a heart attack on 3 April 2002, only 45. R.I.P.

Three great FAD GADGET moments.

– COLLAPSING NEW PEOPLE –
(From the 1984 ‘Gag’ album)

– KING OF THE FLIES –
(From ‘Incontinent’ album.
Live in Manchester 1984)

– LADYSHAVE –

JOHN DREDGE & THE BALCONY SHIRTS BAND With Witty Tune ‘DOUBLE AGENT, WORKING ALONE’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

27 March 2023

Artists: JOHN DREDGE & THE BALCONY SHIRTS BAND
Who: A group formed when singer/lyricist John Dredge met
guitarist/producer/shop owner Scott Balcony in the Balcony Shirts
garment printing and embroidery shop, in Uxbridge, UK. A bassist,
an additional guitarist and drummer were recruited from the shop
staff.

New single: DOUBLE AGENT, WORKING ALONE

TUTV: This is what jaunty pop music sounds like. Short, instantly sticky,
and entertaining. Double Agent, Working Alone (witty title) is a homage to
the stylish spy thrillers of the sixties. Sonically it has that characteristic
Teenage Fanclub strum and breezy vocality putting a smile on your face.
One word. Tune!

The accompanying video evokes memories of cinematic espionage,
with the inclusion of a secret message and a mysterious multi-story
car park.

Watch/listen.

Waking Up With Spanish Power Pop Fury HINDS

Daily noise that works faster and harder than any stimulant

27 March 2023

Since releasing their 3rd album The Prettiest Curse Spanish
power pop fury HINDS have been pretty quiet. No sign of new
music so far.

So, let’s go back to 2015 for some Hinds excitement with their cocktail
party cover of a 1992 song named DAVEY CROCKETT by British indie
misfits Thee Headcoats (1989-2000).

So perfect to punch this blue Monday in the face.

Flamboyant Hip-Metal-Hop Duo NOVA TWINS Dropped Sonic Bombs On Brussels

NOVA TWINS – Botanique venue, Brussels – 23 March 2023

Startling urban R&B punk two-piece NOVA TWINS – vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and
bassist Georgia South – from London, entered the scene back in 2014 playing wild gigs
and releasing a series of big bang singles, which featured on their praised debut LP
Who Are The Girls? in 2020.

But it was with last year’s post-pandemic follow-up LP SUPERNOVA that the utterly cool, human battle-axes raised with the speed of a comet to stardom. British newspaper The Guardian named them the loudest, most exciting new rock band in the UK and gave the
LP a 5/5 score.

Sledgehammer single ‘Choose Your Fighter’ from the Supernova LP

Last Thursday they invaded Brussels for a storming 60 minutes of robust hip-metal-pop rowdiness. The rap-punk-crossover-rock roller coaster caused a sauna-like temperature in the venue. Only now and then they interacted with the ecstatic crowd only to make them even more ecstatic with their Rage Against The Machine bombs. That’s why RATM’s guitarist Tom Morello is a big fan. Some time ago he said: “This is an incredible band who deserve to be huge.”

They appeal to young and old and any age in between. I saw 50-plus-year-old people going nuts as well as a couple of +/- 10-year-old girls on the shoulders of their parents having the time of their lives. Hail hail! Nova Twins rule!

“Look daddy, that’s my favorite band.”

As Kerrang put it: “They are no longer the fringe bad bitch
baddies hoping to be heard – they’re ready to be worshipped.”

Here’s an idea of their blustery live energy.
