Turn up the heat and feel the beat.
It’s PART 10 of Turn Up The Volume‘s yearly hot summer playlists.
And, oops, it’s the final one for this season. Let’s go out it with
a big bang with these 15 firecrackers from 2023.
TRACK BY TRACK
1. ‘Feet Up’ by MY UGLY CLEMENTINE (Austria)
Ace single from this indie pop-punk trio’s
excellent, spicy debut LP THE GOOD LIFE.
Move your feet here.

2. ‘Milk’ by BLACK GRAPE (UK)
Happy Monday Shaun Ryder and his rap mate Paul “Kermit” are back.
This is the first awe-some single from their new, upcoming LP.

3. ‘Los Angeles’ by LOL TOLHURST – BUDGIE – JACKNIFE LEE – JAMES MURPHY (US)
New supergroup feat. former The Cure drummer Lol Tolhurst, former Siouxsie
and the Banshees drummer, and Irish music producer Jacknife Lee. For their
debut single, they invited LCD Soundsystem‘s maestro James Murphy.
Yep, party time.

4. ‘Casting No Light’ by NOBLE ROT (Canada)
Frontman Alex Edkins of Canadian noise engine Metz and Graham Walsh, keyboardist of dance punks Holy Fuck, got together for a project of their own. Their debut Heavenly Bodies, Repetition, Control last March.
This single is a motorik Krautrock-like mindfucker
that circles around like forever. Wowzers.

5. ‘Ring Wing Beast’ by SLEAFORD MODS (UK)
The Brit rap poets released their
12th LP UK Grim last March.
This is my absolute fav jam.

6. ‘Bullet Man’ by PARIS TEXAS (US)
These two sharp-shooting hip-hoppers hit
bullseye with their smoking debut album Midair.
Bullet Man is one of the riot-rap-gun bursts on that debut.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
7. ‘Gorilla Guerilla’ by MANTRA OF THE COSMOS (UK)
Another supergroup. Members: Shaun Ryder & Bez (Happy Mondays/Black Grape),
Andy Bell (Ride/Oasis) and drummer Zak Starkey, yes Ringo‘s son, who played with
Oasis and The Who among others.
This is a debut single you can start and end all raves with.

8. ‘Someone Up There’ by THE WAEVE (UK)
The Waeve is Graham Coxon (Blur’s guitarist)
and songstress Rose Elinor Dougall.
Their intriguing, notable self-titled debut LP came
out last February. You can stream it here.
Someone Up There is one of my fav tracks. It’s a stomping rocker.

9. ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ by OMD (UK)
No pension yet for this swirling synth-pop duo. This new single is TOP!
________________________________________________________________________________________________
10. ‘Carbon Dioxide’ by FEVER RAY (Sweden)
Karin Dreijer aka Fever Ray unleashed her 3rd longplayer
Radical Romantics featuring this vitriolic electro blow out.

11. ‘Ululation’ by YOUNG FATHERS (Scotland)
This swirling rap-hip-pop-soul collective have delivered one of the
best 2023 albums with Heavy Heavy with this spellbining chant on.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
12. ‘Everybody Chatter’ by ALGIERS (US/UK)
Atlanta’s versatile soul-pop-rap-punk outfit launched their
excellent 4th full-length titled Shook last February.
One of the standout tracks is this stellar groover.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
13. ‘Nookie’ by FIDLAR (US)
The Los Angeles‘ gunslingers obviously had fun with covering Limp Bizkit‘s
1999 hit (almost 130 million streams on Spotify). Their take is nasty punk
firework.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
14. ‘All You Fonies’ by DROPKICK MURPHYS (US)
The Celtic rock gang release their second Woody Guthrie tribute album.
On this one belter they all sing their lungs out. So should you too.
________________________________________________________________________________________________
15. ‘Plain Sailing Away’ by THE DHARMA VIOLETS (Wales)
These Welsh psychedelic band scored one of the best
indie LPs my ears heard all year with Back In The Room.
The guitar-riff-circling closing track Plain Sailing Away is one of my favs.
And a perfect one to close this final weekly Summer Patry Playlist series
of 2023.

ALL TOGETHER
