AMERICAN CULTURE – Denver Indies ‘SURVIVE’ On New Striking Stroke From Their Upcoming LP

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

26 March 2024

Press photo by Josh Massara

Denver‘s indie rockers AMERICAN CULTURE who describe themselves as C86ers
that sound nothing like C86 and a band serving as a Trojan horse for poetry since
2014, are gearing up for their 3rd LP. They named it HEY BROTHER IT’S BEEN A WHILE and will hit the streets on May 3 via Convulse Records.

Press info: “Hey Brother, It’s Been A While” is a record of invitingly idiosyncratic punk psychedelia, imbued with a real humanity and compassion that’s been hard earned through life and death stakes. Sonically, American Culture effortlessly weaves the band’s many influences into one cohesive sound, conjuring up an endless array of rock music fantasy scenarios.

What if The Stone Roses were fronted by Jim Carroll? What if Spiritualized and
The Replacements wrote music together? What if The Meat Puppets were a C86
band?. Lyrically the album is an unflinching exploration of a truly harrowing
period of time for co-vocalist/guitarist Michael Stein.

Album artwork by Michael Stein

Chris Adolf (co-vocalist/guitarist): “Michael was homeless last year–he was a missing person for three months. We thought he was dead. So a lot of his songs are about that experience, and then my songs are about the other end–thinking my friend is gone. It’s almost as if we were writing back and forth.”

We already could taste Let It Go, a splendid mid-tempo psych banger.
And here’s new track #2. SURVIVE is about Stein looking back at his
personal troubles and his wish to survive.

The band jingles and jangles all the way through your speakers with vibrant brio
like J Mascis did/does his whole career. Its subtle pop melodiousness sticks from
the kick-off while Stein tells us about his past demons and his future intention.

It made me think immediately of the uncertain future
of American culture within a devastatingly divided USA.
Will the country survive?

Wayward Singer-Songwriter Legend SCOTT WALKER Passed Away 5 Years Ago

25 March 2024

British singer-songwriter SCOTT WALKER was born Noel Scott Engel in Hamilton, Ohio on
9 January 9, 1943. The older generations know him best for his years with 60s gloomy pop trio The Walker Brothers (John, Scott, and Gary) and their two big 1965 hits Make It Easy On Yourself and The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.

After the brothers split up musically Scott started a solo career, made several LPs.
The siblings reunited between 1975 and 1978, for three albums and Scott concentrated afterward again on his solo journey, which included three of his most poignant,
wayward and fascinating longplayers.

Climate Of A Hunter  (1984), Tilt (1995) and Bish Bosh (2012). Three critically praised avant-garde pop records. His intriguing mystic, his surreal imagery and his unfathomable and arresting baritone voice dragged you into his complex and melodramatic world.

A rare, puzzling artist.

Walker passed away, aged 76 in London, on 22 March 2019 due to cancer. He had
one daughter. His death was announced 3 days later, on 25 March by his record
company 4AD.

ATOMIC LIFE – New Nu-Metal Indie Super Team Go Nuclear On Second Single ‘INCENSE & AIRES’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

25 March 2024

Photo: Julian Bracero

Band: ATOMIC LIFE

Who: A supergroup made up of pillars of the New York hardcore world.
This Long Island based alternative rock band features the incomparable
world-known drummer Billy Rymer (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ho9909,
Thoughtcrimes
), Cody Hosza (Glassjaw) on guitar, and Michael Sadis
(NK, The Rivalry) on bass.

Joining these titans is Adea Frances; a fresh talent and multi-disciplined
performance artist who compliments Atomic Life‘s high-energy songs with
her powerful vocals and haunting lyrics.

New single: INCENSE & AIRES

Adea Frances (frontwoman): “Incense & Aries is a foreboding shadow and chilling
reminder to tread carefully amidst the beauty of this world. Within enchanting facades
lie lurking thorns eager to draw blood, fires ready to consume, and the ever-present
threat of losing oneself in the relentless march of time.”

TUTV: Atomic Life‘s jaw-dropping debut single Hit Me First was a dumbfounding acquaintance with this very loud and very clear super team. And with their second
one Incense & Aires it looks like an ear-steaming relationship is in the making.

It’s a splintering mid-tempo slam dunk, again inflated by boiling guitars, nasty
percussion and Frances‘ commanding voice. Atomic Life goes nuclear again.

Nu-metal giants Korn should take them along on their upcoming tour.

ELBOW – British Reliable Pop Architects Deliver Another Solid Album With ‘AUDIO VERTIGO’

New notable longplayers

25 March 2024

British veteran pop-rock combo ELBOW have their 10th LP, named Audio Vertigo out.

Guy Garvey (voice/lyricist): “Audio Vertigo was built from ‘gnarly, seedy grooves created
by us playing together in garagey rooms’ and is both more direct and sonically varied by purpose that its predecessor.”

The Guardian (British newspaper): “The band’s 10th album incorporates African and South American rhythms and instrumentation alongside Guy Garvey’s darkest, funniest lyrics for years. Garvey tackles a diversity of topics, from the welfare state to memories of teenage wildness, with some razor-sharp writing. The singer is forever finding new ways to use his voice. He experiments with texture and even puts it through a vocoder but, for all Elbow’s adventures, the foundations are still classy songwriting, heart and soul.”
Score: 4/5.

TUTV: After 10 LPs chances are huge that you sound familiar. Which happens here
on Elbow‘s new one. And that’s okay as long as your new set of new songs is alluringly constructed, musically and lyrically, in a way that your ears’ attention is irresistibly
drawn, as happens here.

Elbow are reliable pop music architects for a very long time who work with two different
kind of sonic brisks. Wayward crooner wanderings such as Things I’ve Been Telling Myself
For Years, Very Heaven, Her To Earth and Poker Face
, and orchestral discharges such as Balu, The Picture, and my favorite one Good Blood Mexico City. Nothing really overwhelming, but solid songwriting everywhere (except for the two useless transition fragments). Another Elbow mission accomplished.

A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS Take You On A Ghostly Ride With Jittery 7″ Single ‘CHASING COLORS’

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

25 March 2024

Brooklyn‘s noise freaks A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS led by founder/mastermind
Oliver Ackermann
shared new single CHASING COLORS. The track appears alongside
I Can Never Be As Great As You in the second instalment of ‘The Sevens’, a series of four 7-inch vinyl records on white vinyl that unveil a treasure trove of previously unreleased tracks from their terrific 6th LP See Through You.

Ackerman: “When looking back at the recordings that were done around the time
of ‘See Through You’, there were a bunch of great tracks that just captured life back
then and really had something incredible going on. Even though they are a bit raw
and a bit personal, I thought it would be a mistake if they didn’t come out.

I thought it would be best to go back to my roots and put out a series of 7-inches the way
A Place To Bury Strangers started. That strange weird format where the tracks each speak
for themselves; no album context to muddy the water. These tracks are such a contrast to
the way I am feeling now and the current songs we’ve been working on so slip back into this moment in time.”

Chasing Colors is a jittery snorter of a track. Both nerve-racking
and strangely addictive with its mind-bending guitar distortion and
Ackerman‘s ghostly vocals. With APTBS you’re always disconnected
from reality, as we know it, and it feels fine.

Maybe 76-year-old singer-songwriter/producer T BONE BURNETT, born
Joseph Henry “T Bone” Burnett III, wasn’t the glamorous mega star as many
of his contemporary musicians were, like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard
Cohen
and Neil Young, to name just a few but his résumé is stuffed with great
musical achievements.

As a solo artist, he recorded/released several LPs. As a producer, he worked with
Los Lobos, Elvis Costello, Brandi Carlile, and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss and so many
more. He toured with Bob Dylan and other famous friends.

He won a bunch of Grammys, and he also won an Oscar for co-writing The Weary Kind
with Ryan Bingham, one of the songs that actor Jeff Bridges sang in 2009 film Crazy Heart.

As announced a few weeks ago, TBT has canned his 15th solo LP, his first new album in 18 years. He baptized it THE OTHER SIDE and it’ll come out on April 19. Pre-order info here.

Following the wonderful, universal love ballad Waiting for you we get a 2nd taster.
A bluesy groovin’ musing named, SOMETIMES I WONDER, featuring young songstress Weyes Blood.

Enjoy.
