Discover Belgian Funky Punky Collective LÉZARD Who Don’t Stop Making Sense

Up-and-coming

26 April 2024

Band: LEZARD
Who: Sharp-angled post-punk-disco outfit from Ghent, Belgium

Standing in a small club in front of a band you never heard of and get blown
away is always an aural thrill and puts a big smile on my music junkie face.

That magic feel hit me again last week when the Belgian collective named
LÉZARD played in my hometown of Ghent (Belgium) as part of the 4th edition
of indie showcase festival Badlands.

So what was it all about? Imagine Talking Heads reincarnated and only playing sweaty discotheques for people who love to move their feet, hips and butts when they hit town
at the midnight hours. That’s the idea of what Lézard caused with their addictive funky punky set, spiced with tantalizing tunes, boosting beats, burning down the house vibes and sparkling Freak Le Chic guitars here
and there.

Psycho killer

Lead vocalist Neil Claes rattles as manic as the young David Byrne did on repeat, soulful
co-singer Myrthe Marnef adds a sultry party-infused timbre, while the full band plays spot-on. No brakes, no breaks, no mistakes. They didn’t stop making sense. Bingo!

Part-yyyyyyyyy

So far they fabricated two songs. Two jump-up-and-down firecrackers, perfectly designed as a sonic introduction for what Lézard has to offer to your ears and all of your itchy limbs.

Veteran Motherrockers MELVINS Still Know How To Attack Your Ears – New Album ‘TARANTULA HEART’ Out Now

26 April 2024

Last year Washington veteran rockers MELVINS celebrated their 40th year as a band. They’re one of those group (the list gets longer and longer) who have no expiration date. Big-hair founder/vocalist/guitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Cover are still leading the troops.

Their new album, titled TARANTULA HEART
is destroying their fanatic fans’ stereos
since last week. .

Osbourne: “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written before we start recording. The majority ofTarantula Heart has dual drum parts,” added drummer Dale Crover. “Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern wise, then we’d just go for it. Improvising riffs and trading off on drum fills.”

TUTV: Melvins bulldoze their way with a mammoth amount of decibels through their
27th (!) LP. Insane and brutal sonic onslaughts attack your ears and stereo on repeat.

Only 5 tracks, only 39 minutes, but more than enough to wake up your neighbourhood. Louder and nastier than Black Sabbath, sharper and rowdier than lots of snotnose punk bands out there. Yep, the Melvins still are the Melvins , still blaring motherrockers.

THE JANITORS – Swedish Psych Droners Spread Gloom And Doom With New Eerie Nightmare ‘LIES’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

26 April 2024

Band: THE JANITORS
Who:
Swedish peddlers of heavy drones
and fuzzed nightmares since 2004

New single: LIES

This is the second shared piece from the band’s upcoming,
2nd album, baptized An Error Has Occurred, out on 24 May.
Pre-order info here.

“Everything’s been fucked since David Bowie
or they started up the Hadron Collider.

This feeling is epitomised in the album’s title.

New album artwork

Marking over two decades of activity for the Swedish psych-rockers, the recording is informed by heartbreak and loss as well as the dismal state of the entire planet. For the band, these two polarities intertwine constantly: “What’s personal is political and vice versa.”

To channel their frustration and anger, the band revived certain songs they’d shelved during the pandemic. They added others, written since, that suited the mood of sticking
a middle finger up to the oppressive world around us. Whereas previous recordings were often layered up gradually, this time the full band (Henric Herlenius, Jonas Eriksson, Anders Thorell and Wilhelm Tengdahl) rehearsed intensely together before laying down everything live, over two days and nights, in a converted missionary church.

TUTV about Lies: This is pitch black psychedelia at its eerie and hallucinant
best. Macabre tension is in the air from start to finish on this Apocalyptic jam.

Lies creeps behind your back like a vicious serpent on a deadly mission.
A monstrous wall-of-psychotic sound surrounds your mind and turns it
upside down.

It all sounds very 2024 to my ears. Catastrophic wars, devastating human intolerance, mental and physical aggression, dark clouds everywhere as we know it. The light at the end of the tunnel gets smaller and smaller. Gloom and doom is just around the corner.

GIRL IN RED Covers TALKING HEADS – A Sexy, Trippy And Chirpy Girlfriend Is Better

Daily noise that works faster than any stimulant

26 April 2024

Last year, film company A24 launched a restored version
of Talking Heads’ 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense.

A24 has now fabricated a tribute LP, named Everyone’s Getting Involved:
A Tribute To Talking Heads
. I’ll be out on 17 May and features BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, the Cavemen, Chicano Batman feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, girl in red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, the Linda Lindas, Miley Cyrus, the National, Teezo Touchdown, and Toro y Moi.

We already heard Lorde‘s take on Take Me To The River (actually
an Al Green original, covered by TH early in their career) and Paramore
doing Burning Down The House and now it’s Girl In Red‘s turn to do
a TH classic.

She picked GIRLFRIEND IS BETTER from their 1983 album
Speaking In Tongues and it sounds trippy, sexy and chirpy.

Watch NEIL YOUNG And CRAZY HORSE Play ‘CORTEZ THE KILLER’ (Adding A Missed Verse) In SAN DIEGO Last Night

25 April 2024

Last night (April 24), living legend NEIL YOUNG and his long-time compadres
CRAZY HORSE started their Love Earth Tour with a concert at San Diego’s
Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre.

The Crazy Horse line-up included guitarist Micah Nelson, stepping in for Nils
Lofgren
who is currently on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

They opened the show with a 15-minute rendition of CORTEZ THE KILLER from
their 1976 album Zuma. It allegedly featured a missing verse that was cut from
the original recording, and recently rediscovered by Young.

I’m a huge Young fan, but I have no clue what verse he’s talking/signing about.
Do you? Anyway here’s last night’s performance thanks to fan Todd Norris.

CUT THE KIDS IN HALF – New Jersey Upstarts Make Your Head Spin With Their New Riff-Ripper ‘A GOOD MAN DIED’

New striking strokes

25 April 2024

Band: CUT THE KIDS IN HALF
Who: Trio of 3 youngsters, including 2 brothers, Charlie and Jack Silver, named
after Radiohead‘s line in Morning Bell. They bring a fresh approach to the age-old
genre with songs sure to make their predecessors proud with catchy hooks and
an emotional tenderness.

New single: A GOOD MAN DIED
Only their second one, following the 2022
debut of The Quiet Life Of August.

Jack Silver: “‘A Good Man Died’ was born out of a horribly toxic relationship.
It’s about two people who have given up but are too attached and afraid to
make their escapes. It’s an intense glimpse into a love story approaching the
edge of a cliff.”

TUTV: This is vivid vintage rock ‘n’ punk roll from the past played by young, hungry upstarts in the present. Their new riff-ripper is just irresistible. A head-spinning groover that gets under your skin from the get-go, a fervid feet-stomper that rotates on and on,
a bang-bang-bang booster with a jump-up-and-down with your fists in the air chorus
that doubles your adrenalin production for 4 and a half hit-and-run minutes.

Think of the early zealous gusto and the overwhelming oohm of NYC’s celebs The Strokes. In a normal world, this revved-up stunner of a tune should top all indie charts all over the globe. I know a good man died here, but don’t cut this kids in half, they will make your day on the spot. Fact!

New DAVID GILMOUR Album ‘LUCKY AND STRANGE’ Out In September – Hear First Taster ‘THE PIPER’S CALL’

25 April 2024

Artwork and photography by legend Anton Corbijn.

Former Pink Floyd guitar hero DAVID GILMOUR (aged 78 now) has finished
the recordings of his 5th solo LP. It’s titled LUCKY AND STRANGE and will
land on September 6 via Sony Music.

The 8-track album is Gilmour’s first album of new
material in nine years since Rattle That Lock.

David Gilmour about producer Charlie Andrew: (alt-J, Marika Hackman). “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.”

The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson,
Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years.

“It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.”

First taster is THE PIPER’S CALL. A both gentle and electrifying musing that
brings that iconic band, named Pink Floyd, in the late 70s era, to mind.

PINK SUITS – Two British Punk Hellraisers Run Amok On Their New Doomsday Album ‘DYSTOPIAN HELLSCAPE’

Top longlayers

25 April 2024

Band: PINK SUITS
Who: A British rowdy queer
punk duo from Margate, UK.

New album: DYSTOPIAN HELLSCAPE
Their second, following the 2021 debut
Political Child.

Amazing album artwork

TUTV: Rumour goes that this is a lost album by legendary blues-rock duo The White Stripes,
yep our beloved Meg and Jack. It went missing just after the recordings were finished.

The tapes showed up recently in a public dustbin somewhere by the sea in Margate (UK), where they were found by these two pink punk madcaps. They took them to their creepy bat cave, where they trashed, slashed and smashed the whole shebang until it all sounded like THEY wanted. Unpolished, queazy and out-of-their-fucking-heads.

Imagine Meg replaced by Bikini Kill‘s Kathleen Hannah in her teens, bashing the shit out of
a drum and screaming like she’s forced to listen to Taylor Swift on repeat, and Jack White replaced by the Damned’s Captain Sensible back in the days when he was a new rose in town. Together the pink suits fabricate 50 minutes of barbed wire garage punk anarchism and wailing duet chaos.

Deafening loud and deafening clear. To hell with the Brexshit Tories, to hell with Fascists,
to hell with all right-wing scum and to hell with football. Advice: before you throw these two hysteric hellraisers on your stereo, in your bathroom, make sure that you warn your neighbours. Then lock yourself up, turn up the volume to the max so you won’t hear the anti-decibels police when they try to smash your front door in. Hells bloody bells yeah.
Run amok. This is your new Doomsday soundtrack.
