British multi-instrumentalist MIKE OLDFIELD (aged 73 now) had phenomenal
success with his debut LP TUBULAR BELLS . It topped the UK Charts 50 years
ago today, on 6 October 1974.

Tubular Bells initially sold slowly, but gained worldwide attention when its
opening theme was used for the soundtrack to the horror film The Exorcist.
This led to a surge in sales which increased Oldfield‘s profile.

It also hit the top spot in Canada and Australia and #3 in the US. Worldwide it
sold more than 15 million copies over the years. Oldfield who was only 19 when
he recorded the longplayer went on a very triumphant odyssey with no less than
26 albums with Return to Ommadawn as the most recent one (2017).
