Album Tracks That Should Have Been Singles – ‘BIONIC’ By PLACEBO (1996)

23 October 2024

Band: PLACEBO
London‘s internationally lauded veteran post-punk-pop act – glamorous
singer/guitarist Brian Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal – who celebrate
their 20th anniversary this year.

Album: PLACEBO
Self-titled debut,
released in 1996.
Track: BIONIC

The record label put out 5 singles: Come Home, 36 Degrees, Teenage Angst,
Nancy Boy
and Bruise Pristine. Nancy Boy was by far the best of the pack. But
to my ears Bionic deserved the silver single medal, because of the ripper’s
spellbinding guitar hooks.

BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY Goes Country – Hear First Musing ‘OUR HOME’ From His Upcoming Album Featuring His Producer

nNew striking strokes

22 October 2024

Balladeer Will Oldham, also operating under his moniker of BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY started his busy journey back in 1993. He released a lot of solo work so far, collaborated with other songsmiths (and still does) and was also a member of a couple of bands.

The Kentucky crooner went to the iconic country city of Nashville for his next LP.
He recorded it with his befriended producer David “Ferg” Ferguson who co-wrote
several songs. It’s named The Purple Bird and will see the light of day next year
on 31st January. More info here.

New album artwork

Oldham: “I’ve made records with friends, collaborative records like The Brave and the Bold with Tortoise; the two Superwolf records with Matt Sweeney; The Wonder Show of the World with Emmett Kelly; Get on Jolly with Mick Turner. These collaborators get top billing because that’s how this business works. This record, The Purple Bird, is similarly a collaborative effort but the collaborator is the producer, David Ferguson. He’s a giant of a man, an epic musical force, a dear friend. Our work together on this record was the result of years of sharing hard times and great joys, songs and stories, of making music together and apart. There’s a lot of trust in this record on Ferg’s part and on mine, and the trust was hard- and well-earned. When I listen to the record, often times I can’t help but laugh in wonder that life allowed me to participate in such a thing.”

Here’s the first taster, titled OUR HOME and it features Grammy-winning mandolinist
Tim O’Brien. BPB’s warm voice matches Nashville musings superfine (as expected).

MAYFLOWER MADAME – Norwegian Mavericks Nail It Again With New Darkwavish Pearl ‘CRIPPLED CROW’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

23 October 2024

Band: MAYFLOWER MADAME
Who: A band from Oslo, Norway that specializes in a dark and distinctive blend
of post-punk, shoegaze and psych-noir. Their history, so far, includes two album
releases, Observed In A Dream (2016) and Prepared For A Nightmare (2020).

The Oslo-based dark-post-punk-wave outfit have their much anticipated
3rd album, titled INSIGHT out November 1st. Pre-order info here.

MM: “Insight’ is the album we’ve always wanted to create, but at the same time it’s
the most personal and emotionally hardest we’ve made so far. Lyrically, it delves into
a wide range of emotions, from somber reflections about loss and sorrow to feverish
depictions of love, escapism and catharsis.”

Ahead of the release, they present the final preview piece.

CRIPPLED CROW is the fourth triumphant track in a row. The band know
mesmerically well how to embed infectious, poppy melodies into trance-like orchestrations, creating a magnetic appeal from the kick-off. It happens here
again with this darkwavish pearl and its sparkling Interpol-like guitar lines.
The countdown for the album starts here.

AVALANCHE PARTY – British Bohos Crash Into ‘JOHN COLTRANE’S MOSCOW SKYSCRAPER’

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

23 October 2024

Band: AVALANCHE PARTY
Who: Hefty bohos from Yorkshire, UK.

Track: JOHN COLTRANE’S MOSCOW SKYSCRAPER
Definitely one of this year’s weirdest song titles.

And another shared piece from their new, upcoming 2nd
longplayer, called Der Traum Uber Alles out next year on
February 7. Pre-order info here.

New album artwork

TUTV: I have no clue what this vociferous punk headbutt has to do with
the late legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, but this deafening
wall-of-helter-skelter havoc we experience here isn’t exactly a bebop tune.

No, imagine two trains coming from opposite directions at an insane
speed crashing into each other. That’s what happens here. Say no more.

AMYL AND THE SNIFFFERS Unleash Another New Corker ‘JERKIN’ Plus 18+ Video Clip

New striking strokes

22 October 2024

Press photo by John Angus Stewart

Punk rock whirlwind AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS launch
their 3rd LP, baptized Cartoon Darkness this Friday.

But first, quickly, taster #4. JERKIN’ is another barbed wire haymaker to go
berserk to. It’s accompanied by an +18 (too much nudity) video. C’mon this is
2024. Restricting a clip in age will make lots of 18 minus youngsters very curious.

Amyl about the song: “It’s good to express your anger when someone’s been pissing you off and it’s good to have humor in life, especially as a woman, when you’re meant to just passively say ‘everything’s good’ to keep everyone else comfortable. The best part about this song is that a squirter can be anybody’s genitals. I wanted to write a song to big-up “the self” while putting down the “other” because sometimes, even if it’s just for a small window, that’s the best way to laugh something off and empower yourself. World’s pissing me off and breaking my heart more than ever right now, might as well poke it back. It’s pointless but it’s cathartic.”

DUMB POSH HIPPIES – Irish Punks Hit Your Face Really Hard With New Blowout ‘SCRUNCHED UP FIST’

Daily electricity to load your batteries

22 October 2024

Single artwork

Band: DUMB POSH HIPPIES (hilarious name!)
Who: Psych-influenced, three-piece punk band from
Dublin/Derry with a love for big riffs and pace.

Track: SCRUNCHED UP FIST

Ciarán Fitz (vocalist/guitarist): “This is definitely one of the most outright punkers we have, probably. ‘Scrunched Up Fist’ was literally written in the jam room in 10 minutes. Matthew and James were just playing this thing as I was coming back from a smoke, and I knew I had lyrics
in my phone that would work with it. Added some guitar but not much, and it was donezo”

TUTV: Wham bloody wham bam. Expect a sharp-splitting punk rock juggernaut. Amps up and full steam ahead. No rest for the wicked with this razor-blade cutting, head over heels bombshell spiced with sneering vocals. Wham bloody wah-wah guitars bam. Scrunched Up Fist hits your face really hard. Hurry-scurry stroke.

WARGASM – Nu-Metal-Rap Duo Drop Not One But Two Merciless Hammer Blows

Daily noise that works faster than a stream of caffeine

22 October 2024

Milkie Way

Sam Matlock

London‘s nu-rap-metal sensation WARGASM – Milkie Way and Sam Matlock – raised
to stardom in the UK last year with their vitriolic debut album Venom. A demonic
tsunami of deafening headbangers and sassy sucker-punches.

They relentlessly toured afterward but took time to write these
two new merciless hammerblows, CIRCLE PIT and BAD SEED.

“CIRCLE PIT – a rework of a track our Japanese family might already know – is
all about the cycle. You can’t break it, so why be part of it? Get in the pit, come
out to the coast have a few laughs.

“BAD SEED on the other hand… that’s for those that choose to make the cycle worse.
People who waste time being small and hating when there’s so much to create. We’re
going back to the start. There’s an intimate club tour coming up that craved some new
riffs.”
