KIM DEAL is best known as the utterly cool bass player of indie
icons Pixies and from her own band The Breeders, featuring
her twin sister Kelley.
In the past she wrote/shared some of her self-made songs but without any real
attention from the outside. That’ll change, now that Deal has launched her debut
solo album NOBODY LOVES YOU MORE.
Press info: “Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s debut album although it’s not the first
time she has gone solo. She self-released a five-part, ten-song seven-inch vinyl series in 2013.
In keeping with Deal’s meticulous approach to her art, the album was refined over several years. Its oldest songs, ‘Are You Mine?’ and ‘Wish I Was’, were written and originally recorded
in 2011 shortly after Deal came off the Pixies’ “Lost Cities Tour” and relocated to Los Angeles (early versions of those songs were included in said vinyl series).
The last recording for Nobody Loves You More took place in November 2022 with legendary engineer and close friend Steve Albini, who helmed final track ‘A Good Time Pushed’ at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Along the way she has brought in a variety of collaborators from Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, twin sister Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, Britt Walford), to Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan.”

MOJO (British music monthly): “Nobody Loves You More is a singularly uplifting, life-affirming listen, where joy and despair, love and loss, are irrevocably entwined, and kept afloat by Deal’s unfailing lightness of touch.” Score: 10/10.
TUTV: Kim Deal on her own, expresses mixed emotions about past and present
personal experiences on this record. Mostly with meditative, moony, and subtly orchestrated reveries such as the title track, Coast, Are You Mine?, Wish I Was and Summerland. All charming songs for a quiet winter night in.
Deal‘s slightly hoarse voice is instrumental. Its tender-hearted aura creates a relaxing ambiance, interrupted now and then by more uptempo, upbeat tracks like stand-out
vibe Crystal Breath, the vigorous guitar-frisky Disobediece and the buzzing Big Ben Beat
jam. The critics jubilate euphorically, a bit too much for my aural liking. Mind you, Nobody
Loves You More is a riveting record, but not an overwhelming triumph as stated by many.

American rapper, songwriter, actor, and film producerICE CUBE (born O’Shea Jackson Sr.
55 years ago in Los Angeles) released his 11th album yesterday, his first in 6 years, with
the 19-track MAN DOWN record. As the cliché goes, it’s ‘only for fans’, but there are some highlights on it. Like single EGO MANIACS featuring his buddies Busta Rhymes and Killer Mike.
As part of their OASIS reunion tour in 2025, the Gallaghers have announced
2 shows in Japan at the Tokyo Dome on October 25 & 26 and one show in
South Korea on October 21.
The announcement comes in South Korean language. Well done, brothers. LOL.
Grunge rock titans PEARL JAM fronted by Eiffel Tower voice Eddie Vedder
released their 3rd LP VITALOGY on 22 November 1994, today 30 years ago.
The record has been identified as a punk rock album by both critics and members
of the band, departing the grunge sound of the band’s previous work. Many of the
songs on the album address the pressures of fame and dealing with the resulting
loss of privacy.
The album’s title Vitalogy, which literally means “the study of life”,
came from an early 20th-century medical book that Vedder found
at a garage sale.
It hit the top spot in the US, Australia, Ireland, Sweden
and New Zealand. It peaked at #4 in the UK.
Rolling Stone said: “A wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful. Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record.” Score: 4/5.
In order to not miss a beat Turn Up The Volume scans the musical
horizon daily (doing it for years now, actually) to stay in touch with
all new things sonically great and shares the results on a weekly
basis.
Band: SLOW READERS CLUB Who: Who: Alt-pop rockers
from Manchester, UK.
Track: ANIMALS
Taster from their 7th album, titled Out Of A Dream.
Slated for launch on 14 March 2025.
“‘Animals’ is us doing full on euphoric guitar pop, full of energy and drama.
It’s a celebration of intense, all-consuming primal love. Infatuation as a magic spell.
It’s about a longing for togetherness and sanctuary, as an escape from the bleak
reality of the outside world.”
Artist: GHOST ON TV Who: Musical project started by Boston multi-instrumentalist
and songwriter Paul DePasquale during the pandemic. He released
two records in late 2020.
Track: DAILY LAWS
First shared piece of upcoming, new album
‘Mister Silence’, ready to roll out, early next year.
“‘Daily Laws’ is about the art of negotiation with yourself and others. We always need to make sacrifices in life when dealing with other people, but it’s important to make negotiations with yourself. Know when to be kind and compassionate and know when to be unapologetic when being or doing what is best for yourself.”
A bass-booming trip-hop trip
that hypnotizes and mesmerizes.
Feverish vocals. Intriguing tune.
Band: PANHEAD SHARPS Who: Indies from Dunfermline, Scotland.
Track: WHEN YOU ARE FALLING
A song that speaks to those moments of struggle and resilience.
With haunting lyrics like “When you are falling, I will be there when
you hit the ground” It’s a beautiful reminder that we’re not alone
in our toughest times.
Empathetic emotions bottled up in a bass-pushing
mid-tempo grungy blues-rock burst stoked with
fanatical guitars and compulsive vocals.
Track: PAUSE AT YOU
First preview from ‘Lust for Life, Or: ‘How To Thread The Needle And Come
Out The Other Side To Tell The Story’ (yep, that’s the full title), their 3rd LP, out
14th of March.
“‘Pause At You’ is a culmination of everything we’ve been working on over the last
few years. An observation on night time paranoia mixed about with night out ecstasy.
Light outing, floor filling, tie undressing, rock.”
Band: WYLDERNESS Who: Welsh shoegazers from Cardiff
with 2 full-lengths under their belt.
Track: BIG IDEA
First taster from their forthcoming new EP
entitled ‘Safe Mode‘ which will be released
in 2025.
Starry-eyed guitar sparks set the glistening tone
for this sonically colored rainbow, all the way
through. Woolgathering vocals and attractive
melodiousness.
Dim the lights, sit down, relax and let the moody and bluesy vibes
at work here take over your stream of thoughts. Echoes of the late Jeff Buckley will massage your ears.

Chicago‘s indie guitar rock trio HORSEGIRL drew lots of attention when they entered the scene 5 years ago with a series of singles. A year later came their first EP, followed by their debut album Versions Of Modern Romance in 2022. Rolling Stone Magazine, Stereogum and many new fans were impressed.
Now, LP number 2, named Phonetics On And On is completed (produced
by Cate Le Bon) and ready to hit the streets on Valentine’s Day next year.
Along with the news comes lead single 2468.
A non-stop jangly jam that makes your head
spin 360°.
Wake up people,
get on your horse
and start counting.
Band: THE STONE ROSES Who: Manchester’s indie heroes who made one
of the best-ever debut LP’s (1989) in my book. Active: 1983–1996, 2011–2017 / 2 studio LPs.
5 years (because of legal label battles, drugs, too much money, etc)
after their debut longplayer the lazy bastards came up with this new
rad single as the harbinger for their sophomore album Second Coming.
Its lyrics are a telling of the Passion of Christ, reinterpreting Jesus as a black woman. The song peaked at #2 in the UK.
Who: Belgian noise rock trio whose sound draws influences from bands such as Black Midi, Tool, Battles and Swans, blending dissonance with a strong sense of identity. Their music balances chaos and control, mixing unsettling atmospheres with hypnotic rhythms and sharp distortion.
Works: They have two albums on their résumé. Heisa (2018) and joni (2020). And #3 in the pipeline.
Track: THE HARMONIST
First piece from their 3rd LP, coming
our way in 2024. Details coming soon.
Press info: “It’s an eerie, hypnotic track that explores themes of isolation,
introspection, and escapism. Starting with a minimalist groove, it crescendos
into an all-out jubilant, earsplitting waltz.”
TUTV: There’s an enigmatic tension in the air throughout this new Heisa brainbreaker. After a near-whispering foreplay with sparkling riffs and steady drum beats the twilight jam grows slowly but surely towards a demonic climax, with primal screams coming from out of the darkness and schizophrenic guitars going ballistic the Fugazi way. Get the volcanic picture? A perfect hellraiser for your Doomsday playlist.
