When legendary grunge Nirvana broke up, following Kurt Cobain‘s
suicide (5 April 1994) drummer Dave Grohl started to write and record
songs of his own as a cathartic experience to recover from the fateful
Cobain passing.
It led to the self-titled debut album of his new band FOO FIGHTERS.
The record was released on July 4th in America, today 30 years ago.
It reached #23 in the United States, #2 in the UK and New Zealand, and #5 in Canada.
The name Foo Fighters was taken from the description World War II aircraft pilots would
use to describe various UFOs. This science fiction theme is further continued with the name of Grohl’s Capitol Records imprint, Roswell Records, a reference to the city of Roswell, New Mexico, known for the Roswell UFO incident of 1947.
The album cover was designed by Grohl‘s then-wife, photographer
Jennifer Youngblood, featuring a Buck Rogers XZ-38 Disintegrator Pistol.
Rolling Stone: “Dave Grohl could turn out to be the ’90s punk equivalent of Tom Petty, whose vocal timbre and wry manner he occasionally approximates here. Like Petty, Grohl displays a good-natured humility that belies his talent for nailing the raw emotional substance that lies just beneath the surface of the average rock cliché… If Foo Fighters has a theme, it’s that music remains the ultimate anodyne.”
