DAVE GROHL And GREG KURSTIN Were Made To Love KISS

7 December 2021

To celebrate this year’s Hanukkah, the traditional Jewish
Festivals Of Lights foo fighter DAVE GROHL and producer
GREG KURSTIN teamed up for some hot covers. So far their
takes on Ramones, Van Halen, The Clash and 4 others
inspired Turn Up The Volume to headbang.

And here comes the finale. Cover 8 is their version of a KISS
firestarter. Not their huge hit I was Made For Lovin’ You but that
good old 1975 classic Rock And Roll Nite.

Grohl: “Ladies and gentlemen, we made it. Night 8! And what better
way to celebrate another year of Hanukkah Sessions than with Chaim
Witz and Stanley Eisen….two young lads from Queens that set the world
(and thousands of stages) on FIRE as Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley
of KISS!!!”

Northern Irish Songwriter LEE ROGERS Stays Alive With The BEE GEES

23 November 2021

Artist: LEE ROGERS
Who: Singer-songwriter from the small
town of Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland.

Early November this warm Americana voice from Northern Ireland
released an 6-track EP called DARK NOTIONS. An arresting extended
play of six sweet little pearls.

One of the songs is a BEE GEES cover of their 1977 STAYIN’ ALIVE and it’s quite striking.

No helium-affected vocals, no glamorous disco flamboyance. Rogers slows the classic down, drenches it in a nostalgic sepia bath, and gives it a haunting and soul-stirring
twist corresponding with the somber lyrics.

DAVE GAHAN Becomes A Soul-Stirring Crooner With Cover Of A 1966 Hit

26 October 2021

Band: DAVE GAHAN AND THE SOULSAVERS
Who: Side project of Depeche Mode’s frontman
that produced 2 studio albums so far.

New Album: IMPOSTER
A covers LP with Gahan doing Neil Young, Cat Power,
Gene Clark, Bob Dylan, and several other artists.
A total of 12 songs.

Release: 12th November 2021

Trailer for the album…

Gahan: “When I listen to other people’s voices and songs, more
importantly, the way they sing them and interpret the words, I feel
at home. I identify with it. It comforts me more than anything else.
There’s not one performer on the record who I haven’t been moved
by. I know we made something special, and I hope other people feel
that and it takes them on a little kind of trip, especially people who
love music and have for years.””

We already heard his Cat Power cover and here Dave Gahan turns into a soul-stirring crooner with his take of THE DARK END OF THE STREET. A sensitive 1966 ballad written
by a duo called Chips Moman and Dan Penn and covered, over the years, by several big stars such as Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Elvis Costello and Frank Black.

And now it’s Gahan‘s turn…

KURT VILE Runs, Rolls And Rocks On His VELVET UNDERGROUND Cover

4 October 2021

Two weeks ago album I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground
and Nico
came our way, with a group of big rock names honoring the iconic band
and more specifically their debut masterpiece LP of 1967.

As it goes with these sorts of albums, some covers work, but mostly it’s about
a couple of exceptions. Yet, here on this tribute of an (almost) uncoverable band
several interpretations actually work. Michael Stipe doing ‘Sunday Morning‘, Sharon
Van Etten
turning into a ‘Femme Fatale‘, Iggy Pop & Matt Sweeney trashing ‘European
Son’
, The National‘s maestro Matt Berninger with ‘I’m Waiting For The Man‘ and my
favorite: Kurt Vile‘s pumped up version of ‘Run Run Run’.

Let’s run, roll and rock with Kurt…

When CHELSEA WOLFE Covers JONI MICTHELL

22 September 2021

Although she wasn’t at the historic three-day Woodstock festival
in 1969, singer-songwriter legend JONI MITCHELL wrote a song
about it. It appeared as B-side to her single Big Yellow Taxi. Several
artists, including her friends Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young covered it.

Goth heroine CHELSEA WOLFE about why she wanted to cover Woodstock:

“While preparing for the ‘Birth Of Violence’ tour, I was watching a lot of Joni Mitchell videos.
One night after working on the live set I was just letting the Joni videos roll. “Woodstock” came on and I started singing along. After that I simply asked Ben if he’d be into covering it with me for the tour. The cover came together quite naturally and it was a treat to play on stage every night. Joni is obviously such a big inspiration to this side of my music, so it felt right to pay tribute to her.”

Here comes Wolfe‘s soft alter ego…

Pearl Jam Maestro EDDIE VEDDER Covers R.E.M. Hit ‘DRIVE’ For Sean Penn Film

24 August 2021

Inflammable actor/director Sean Penn orchestrated a new movie
called Flag Day, a crime drama. The film’s soundtrack features lots
of ’90s alt-rock.

Pearl Jam‘s maestro EDDIE VEDDER is part of it with a cover of the superb
R.E.M. hit DRIVE from their outstanding 1992 LP Automatic For The People.

Vedder‘s version resonates sonically almost identical to the original,
the only difference is that he, just like ichael Stipe, has a great voice.

It’s hard to cover this magic Bunnymen classic, but Chrvches‘s take
with its big orchestration and Lauren Mayberry‘s nightingale voice
is pretty good.

Have a listen…
