Cleveland‘s sonic underground misfits PERE UBU, led by eccentric singer/songwriter and performer DAVID THOMAS were and still are one of a kind phenomenon in alternative music’s history. The band rose out of the ashes of Rocket from the Tombs in 1975, and
more than four decades late with (after/with different line-ups) this outlandish unit still fascinates with its headstrong, engrossing sound. Its deranged, life-like stories and, of course, Thomas‘ distinct vox. Although not all Pere Ubu albums are streaming on Spotify
I still managed easily to fill the Wurlitzer with 15 crackerjack songs. Here are TURN UP

One of the media’s former favorite targets and so-called psycho (read: bipolar, hurt, abandoned by her closed ones as a teenager, confused, outspoken, confused, straight
in your face, yes like so many of us, totally HUMAN) COURTNEY LOVE can fill a shiny Wurtlizer, easily. If you can’t believe this I guess you were paying too much attention
to all the sensational bullshit stories on her private life invented by the pathetic gutter press (she had a fucked up teenage life, no doubt about that, just read the right biography to find out why, not the fucking paparazzi rubbish). And yes, she wasn’t a great musician, but bloody hell, she wrote a series of smashing killer crackers nobody can ignore!! From the brutal Teenage Whore to the heartbreaking, confessional ballad that Letter To God is. And she was one of the hottest rock and roll performers I saw on a podium. A genuine primal scream grunge legend in my own borderline book. Oil your vocal chords, you’ll definitely need them to clamor along with L.O.V.E…

This episode was actually planned to be featured in a couple of weeks. But by now all fans definitely now that Mark E. Smith, the wayward mastermind of incomparable Manchester post-punk outlaws THE FALL died yesterday – 24 January – only 60. Smith was no less than a troubled genius. A fascinating wordsmith, a modern poet and made more records in his short lifetime than Radiohead would ever be able to complete in a full century. In memory
of this once in a lifetime artist and the countless brill line-ups of his band here are not the 15 usual picks, but 25 standout eruptions. R.I.P. Psycho Mafia Smith.
