Promo For ‘BERLIN’ Album By LOU REED – 50 Years Ago
28 September 2023
Next week, on 5 October, it will 50 years since rock ‘n’ roll animal LOU REED (1942-2013) released his 3rd LP, titled BERLIN. One of his highly applauded and critically acclaimed longplayers, following the equally astounding Transformer magnum opus the year before.
Single ‘How Do You Think It Feels‘
Great live footage from 1974
Berlin wasn’t a happy album. The record is a tragic rock opera about a doomed couple,
Jim and Caroline, living in decadent Berlin, and addresses themes of drug use, prostitution, depression, domestic violence, and suicide. No, not a happy one, but one that reflected the real, hedonistic world he was a part of in his own beloved New York City.
Conservative American critics despised the record only because
Reed wrote songs about all those things as if he glorified them.
It flopped in the US but peaked at #7 in the UK. Over the years it
became a classic in the Western world, loved by different generations.
Here the promotional poster and visual advertisement message for the media.

Declan Patrick MacManus aka ELVIS COSTELLO (69 now) released
his 3rd LP ARMED FORCES (of a total of 32, so far) on 5 January 1979.
As it happened/happens all the time record labels wanted/want,
no idea why, different album covers for different countries/continents.
In this case, see the US and Europe/UK covers for Armed Forces below.
So the promo for magazines/newspapers, above, was definitely
the advertisement used in America.

Promotion/advertising from the past
The SEX PISTOLS released their one and only LP Never Mind the Bollocks,
Here’s the Sex Pistols in December 1977. Still the best punk record ever to
my punk ears.
In Japan the album was promoted in magazines
with the ad below. Talking about lost in translation.

Promote This! DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED (1977)
24 July 2023
Brit-punk gunslingers THE DAMNED were the first punk band to release an LP.
The album titled DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED was produced by Nick Lowe
and released by legendary indie label Stiff Records, on 18 February 1977.
Brian James (songwriter/guitarist) about the messy album cover: “That was
organised by this photographer called Peter Kodick, Stiff Records had assigned him
to do the thing. They thought it was a jolly wheeze to surprise us with a few cream
cakes, little knowing that we would relish it, get into to it and enjoy the whole
experience”.
Captain Sensible bassist: “I had more pie on my face than any of the other buggers
and on the back of the sleeve I had my back to the picture, so I went down a photo booth
and got some pictures, cut one out and said ‘put that on there’ so I would have something
to show my relatives, because I didn’t think we’d be invited to make another album.”
The still unanswered question is: did your sister like it?

Promote This! The Northern American Edition Of ‘RUBBER SOUL’ By THE BEATLES (1965)
Music promo from the past
23 July 2023
In Northern America the music (albums/singles) of THE BEATLES was released/distributed by Capitol Records. They didn’t always put new albums/singles out on the same day as the English release date. Also, they didn’t respect the original English tracklist of LPs.
This happened also with the Fab Four‘s masterpiece RUBBER SOUL in 1965.
The American version didn’t feature ‘Drive My Car’, ‘Nowhere Man’, ‘What Goes On’
and ‘If I Needed Someone‘, all of which were instead issued on the Beatles‘ next
North America LP, titled Yesterday and Today, that came out in June 1966.
On the other hand CR added ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face’ and ‘It’s Only Love’, two
songs from the Help! longplayer released the year before, in August 1965.
Masterwork.
