Canadian Alt Rockers ‘1971’ Say Goodbye To Their Lost Friend And Founding Member ‘Cameron Glen Cranston’…

Sonic musings for the twilight hours…

22 November 2017

Last February Cameron Glen Cranston, bassist and founding member of Canadian indie rockers 1971 passed away suddenly, only 25 years old. The band decided to not continue without their lost soul brother, instead, they chose to say goodbye with the release of their last existing recordings with Cameron. Two unreleased demos actually. The first one called ‘Anxiety (In the Depths of Northwestern Ontario)’. Here’s the gripping heartbreaker…

The band will release this one as well as two other songs on cassette
and 7” vinyl via Art Of The Uncarved Block on 1 December.

“We really hope this release properly puts this band to rest and we hope it touches
some people who might have experienced something similar to what we went through. Cameron was a great musician and an inspiration to a lot of people he knew. He deserves
to be heard and remembered.

SONOFDOV – American Singer Songwriter With A Touching Spark Of Tristesse…

‘A Low Hush Keel’ by SON OF DOV

Singer-songwriter Dennis King aka SONOFDOV is a passionate singer-songwriter. “Most of the time I’m a walking grammatical canker-soar, a middle-aged Jersey boy with poor posture and DIY stubbornness. I grew up on hand-me-down vinyls and tough-skin jeans, teaching myself two broken chords and how not to play correctly” says the troubadour, born and based in New Jersey, US. His newest musing is a downhearted love ballad. A touching reflection of tristesse. You know, the kind of affecting song you like to hear on your car radio, in the middle of the night, when the world is asleep and the sound of silence takes over. Here’s some special soul music…

.
He’s standing on the corner with a suitcase in his hand
he’s leaving for good,he gave the best he can.
Dreams come a rushing like cross town floods
they’ll put you in the movies “The Killer Above”

Chorus:
In a low light I see a flicker in her eyes tell me
there’s a heart that won’t let go
please don’t lose control.

She’s standing light a statue in the middle of the road
dreaming how it was and never letting go.
But darkness is the devil and the devil was her friend
she made a final deal, now she can live again.

Chorus:
In a low light I see a flicker in her eyes tell me
there’s a heart that won’t let go
please don’t lose control.

I wish you all the best, the best that you can find
a moment in “mercy” on a long beatin’ line.
but the sickness came fast and stole my only love
brought me to my knees “The Killer Above”
brought me to me knees “The Killer…..

Chorus:
In a low light I see a flicker in her eyes tell me
there’s a heart that won’t let go
please don’t lose control.
please don’t lose control
please don’t lose control

DEAP VALLY Surprises With Gripping Unplugged Version Of ‘TURN IT OFF’…

‘Turn It Off’ by DEAP VALLY

As an homage to the nineties the utterly cool & noisy blues rock ladies of DEAP VALLY decided to record an EP with four of their favorite songs of last year’s booming album FEMEJISM stripped to the bone. John Stavas created a moony clip for TURN IT OFF, one
of the four tracks chosen to play without electricity. It also happens to be my fav one. If you never ever heard of this amazing duo nor the song in question you probably would say that Patti Smith just shared an unreleased and unknown track which she recorded somewhere, some time in a dark smoky bar with David Bowie on saxophone. Yes, that good! Genuine tenderness! Relax, open that delicious bottle of red Bordeaux, dim the lights, light some candles and press the button, here’s some honest sentiment…

The Song That Made Me Cry In 2016 – Here’s LOADED by RICH GIRLS…

7inthemix

richgilrl

Now and then we all need captivating songs to cry to. Harrowing melancholy coming straight from a sorrowful heart is what I cherish in moments of sadness and I had some this year,  privately (my father died) and more in general (the loss of human solidarity). RICH GIRLS is one of those bands you want to have close by when tristesse haunts you. Led by songwriter and endearing voice Luisa Black they released a gripping 5-track EP, titled Love Is The Dealer last September. Five tender pearls to soundtrack gloominess filled twilights. For me, opener LOADED was the track that colored the whole picture just perfectly. Imagine walking into a dim bar, late at night, alone and heavy-hearted. And while ordering your next drink the radio plays some forgotten song, Brenda Lee’s comin’ on strong.  Here’s my favorite track of several nights in 2016…

Slow to begin
since it’s a sin
I only want to see you
loaded

slow to pretend
only a friend
Ii only want to see you
holding

love is the dealer
love is the drug
love is the dealer
love is the loaded gun

slow to begin
it only makes it
it only makes it
worse
to be the prick

drunk on the phone
the whole night before
I only want to see you
anymore

love is the dealer
love is the drug
love is the dealer
love is the loaded gun

so shoot baby
shoot baby
shoot aim it
shoot aim
it’s too late yeah
too late yeah

love is the dealer
love is the drug
love is needle
love is damage done

done done…

For all the lonely ones
For all the broken ones
For all the desperate ones
For all the unfortunate ones
For all the dying ones
For all of us in pain.…

You can be redeemed, boys, you can be redeemed
Life is but a dream, boy, you can be redeemed
Nothing’s as it seems, you can be redeemed

Everything’s permitted, nothing’s really true
Live outside the law, boys, doing what to do
Nothing is at it seems, you can be redeemed

Sometimes I feel so lonely
Sometimes I feel so lonely
Sometimes I feel so lonely
Sometimes I feel so lonely

You can be redeemed, boys, you can be redeemed
Life is but a dream, boy, you can be redeemed
Nothing’s as it seems, you can be redeemed

Artist: GIUNGLA
Who/home: the one-woman-project of young, highly talented, Italian singer/songwriter Emanuela Drei from Bologna. Giungla is actually the Italian word for ‘jungle’…
Track: SAND – from her debut EP ‘Camo’ – out May 20th via Factory Flaws
Score: Once you will have heard the repetitive, mesmerizing guitar line combined with Drei‘s seducing, nostalgic pop voice you will remind her forever. Pure magic. When she sings ‘I love the sand in my shoes’ you know she’s on the beach and you want to join her. Here’s the soundtrack to your sweet night dreams…

Yellowbird by HEAVY HEART

4 boys and 1 girl from South East London
producing dream pop to play at night…
Anna, the girl, is sad, lonely, angry & afraid
a camouflaged, malicious spirit plays with
her feelings, she became a yellowbird ,
an incarnation of her worst self…
I guess we all know that yellowbird,
we all have our demons, therefore
this melancholic pop promenade will
capture your thoughts and ears…

.
Coming down this time around
I’ve got somebody to show me how
Even though it hurts, I know
to lay it all down, let’s have it out

Yellow bird
Feathers earned
Suffer through it all

On the stairs it was me and you
There was music playing in another room
Something old, we knew the tune
making up the words like we always do

Yellow bird
Feathers earned
Suffer through it all

If you’re so sure you’re right
would it kill to try and change your mind?
‘Cause you’re so tired of the fight
I think that you might change your mind

Friday night I go outside
but let the buses pass me by
‘Cause I have got nowhere to be
Do you want to go nowhere with me?

Yellow bird
Feathers earned
Suffer through it all

If you’re so sure you’re right
