Electro nerd and sometimes DJ Richard D. James aka APHEX TWIN started his – now you see me, now you don’t – Odyssey in 1988. He has, so far, 6 albums under his belt, with Syro from 2014 as the most recent one.
Now and then he drops shreds of music on the internet, which he did now again with two versions of a piece, named Zahl am1. The name is a reference to the Zähl, the soundboard he used to mix the track.
The art accompanying both tracks is a photo of the electronic music pioneer at the beach in Italy with a woman, who Reddit sleuths have identified as filmmaker Cordelia Angel Clarke.
James posted them on his favorite streaming platform Soundcloud and added this: “got many requests for this one from a few years back, italy, pic with my love from scilly recently…need sun…relentlessly raining in uk…mixed down on the zahl, think theres better mixes, will upload if i find em,”

Richard David James was born 51 years ago in Ireland. Back in 1985 he began
his musical journey as APHEX TWIN. His eccentric electronic wizardry impressed alternative critics who spread the news. Slowly but surely he gained notoriety among music fans who search for and love challenging artists.
It all started with his debut longplayer SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS 85-92.
A puzzling, yet accessible work (think early Brian Eno) of sound-exploring electronica.
It was released 30 years ago, on 9 November 1992.
AllMusic wrote: “One of the indisputable classics of electronica, and a defining document
for ambient music in particular, Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is Richard D. James’ earliest and most fully realized achievement. Reputedly created on homemade equipment deconstructed from standard synthesizers, the music within takes its cue from club beats and the techno rhythms of rave and acid-house culture… This landmark recording is one of the essential building blocks of any electronica collection.” Score: 5/5.

After his 2014 comeback album Syro, eccentric electro wizard Richard D. James
aka APHEX TWIN has uploaded six unreleased tracks on his SoundCloud page
where he’s known as user 18081971 as Resident Adviser found out.
The fresh tracks are quite accessible compared to what we are used from this
cult artist. The pieces vary from ambient to cinematic, from spacey to ghostly.
