7 May 1977 – EAGLES Topped The US Single Charts With Everlasting Classic ‘HOTEL CALIFORNIA’ 47 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

7 May 2024

Legendary Californian rockers EAGLES scored a gigantic hit with their brilliant epic story of HOTEL CALIFONRIA that always reminds me, when I hear the song, of the remote hotel in the mountains in the classic horror movie The Shining with Jack Nicholson delivering one of his best psycho performances ever.

This everlasting classic was written by Don Felder & Don Henley (music), and the late Glenn Frey (lyrics) and featured a memorable Joe Walsh guitar solo. It peaked at #1 in
the US today 47 years ago, on 11 May 1977, and scored big time on the rest of the planet.
It was the title track of their fifth full length and sublime million-seller album that turned
the band into global rock stars.

‘We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave”

.

On this day in 1984, on 5 May 1984 they scored one
of their 2 number 1 hits in the UK with THE REFLEX.

“The reflex is a lonely child, who’s waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover, isn’t that bizarre?
And every little thing the reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark”

1 May 1956 – JOHNNY CASH Walked The Line 68 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

1 May 2024

The late great country star JOHNNY CASH released his
classic I WALK THE LINE on 1 May 1956, 68 years ago
today.

It was his first No.1 on the US Billboard country charts. It remained on the charts for over 43 weeks. Inspired by the backward playback of guitar runs on his tape recorder, the man in black used the technique to produce the unique chord progression of the song. It also includes Cash’s distinctive “boom-chicka-boom” sound, created by putting a dollar bill in the neck of his guitar.

OASIS Released Their Euphoric Gin & Tonic Debut Single ‘SUPERSONIC’ 30 Years Ago Today

Top singles from the past

11 April 2024

Britrock legends OASIS released their debut single SUPERSONIC on 11 April 1994,
30 years ago today. Oh my, oh my! Time really flies when you had/have fun with
one of the best rock bands ever.

I need to be myself / I can’t be no one else
I’m feeling supersonic / Give me gin and tonic

Those opening lines still sound awe-inspiring, rip-roaring and utterly cool!
So far, in my book, nobody followed into Oasis‘ giant champagne supernova
footsteps.

Noel wrote some of the best songs in music history and Liam was/is a natural-born
rock ‘n roll star every night. Live they were a red-hot rockin’ blast (I saw them 27 times). And yes, those two fighting brothers were maximum fun, on and off-stage.

Supersonic was the start of a fantastic rock era. Oasis‘ gonna live forever.

A reissue of the single, in different formats, is available now. Order here.

3 April 1964 – Today 60 Years Ago BOB DYLAN Had His First Hit In The UK With Legendary Anthem ‘THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’

Top singles from the past

3 April 2024

Living legend BOB DYLAN (best singer-songwriter in my book) hit the UK Single Charts
for the first time 60 years ago today, on 3 April 1964 with The Times They Are A-Changin’.

It peaked at #9. It was the title track of his acclaimed 3rd LP.

The times are a-changin’ drastically again lately.

In 2010 Dylan‘s hand-written song lyrics were sold at an auction in New York,
for $422,500. They were purchased by a hedge fund manager.

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin’
And you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won’t come again
And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
And there’s no tellin’ who
That it’s namin’
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside ragin’
Will soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin’
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin’
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin’
