One of the best firecrackers of one of the best bands ever in my book. THE JAM scored their first UK numero uno with flaming single GOING UNDERGROUND on 22 March 1980. 38 years ago today. It went straight to the top spot on release and stayed there for three weeks. Actually, it was a lucky shot as B-side ‘Dreams of Children‘ was planned to be the
A-side, following a mistake at the pressing plant so it was finally released as a double-AA. As many radio DJ’s preferred ‘Going Underground‘, they played it on repeat and the rest is history. Here’s living legend ‘Paul Weller‘ and his former mates going really sharp…

Some people might say my life is in a rut
But I’m quite happy with what I got
People might say that I should strive for more
But I’m so happy I can’t see the point
Somethings happening here today
A show of strength with your boys brigade
And I’m so happy and you’re so kind
You want more money of course I don’t mind
To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes
And the public gets what the public wants
But I want nothing this society’s got
I’m going underground (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground (going underground)
Well let the boys all sing and the boys all shout for tomorrow
Some people might get some pleasure out of hate
Me, I’ve enough already on my plate
People might need some tension to relax
Me, I’m too busy dodging between the flak
What you see is what you get
You’ve made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies wash you down and their promises rust
You’ll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns
And the public wants what the public gets
But I don’t get what this society wants
I’m going underground (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground (going underground)
So let the boys all sing and the boys all shout for tomorrow
We talk and talk until my head explodes
I turn on the news and my body froze
The braying sheep on my TV screen
Make this boy shout, make this boy scream!
Going underground
Going underground!
I’m going underground!
I’m going underground!
These braying sheep on my TV screen
Make this boy shout, make this boy scream!
Going underground (going underground)
Well, let the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground (going underground)
Well, let the boys all sing and let the boys all shout
Going underground (going underground)
Well, let the brass bands play and feet go pow, pow, pow
Going underground (going underground)
So let the boys all sing and let the boys all shout for tomorrow

CLASSIC – Here’s SLADE Scoring No 1 Hit In The UK With ‘CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE’ 45 Years Ago Today…

20 March 2018

Screamy glam rockers SLADE from Wolverhampton were a massive hit machine back in
the early seventies (17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart) Frontman Noddy Holder‘s voice was one of a very clamorous kind and essential
for this 4-headed gang that looked weirdly flashy and made a living out of easy shout along bangers. Big bands such as Nirvana , Smashing Pumpkins, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Undertones, The Runaways and The Clash all said at one point that Slade influenced
their own racket. CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE was their fourth numero uno crackerjack
in the United Kingdom when it landed on the top seat of the singles chart on 20 March 197345 years ago today. Manchester legends Oasis covered the steamy track as
one of the B-sides for their ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ cd single in 1996.

40 Years Ago KATE BUSH Scored A Number One Hit In The UK With Debut Single ‘WUTHERING HEIGHTS’…

Iconic singer/songwriter and fascinating performer KATE BUSH hit the top spot with
debut single WUTHERING HEIGHTS on the UK singles chart on 11 March 1978 – 40 years ago today – and stayed there for four weeks. Bush was inspired by the novel of the same name and wrote, at the age of 18, the idiosyncratic and spectacular song after watching the last ten minutes of a BBC mini-series based on Wuthering Heights. Legend goes that when Bush discovered that she shared the same birthday with writer Emily Brontë (30 July) she decided to write a song about the book within the space of just a few hours. Here’s that prodigious pearl, here’s that breathtaking voice, here’s that classic…

Glam Rock Legends SUEDE Released Flamboyant Firecracker Single ‘ANIMAL NITRATE’ 25 Years Ago…

20 February 2018

Twenty-five years ago – on 22 February 1993 – British glam rockers SUEDE released one of their best tracks ever (to my ears). ANIMAL NITRATE was/still is an awesome firecracker. Glowing and flashy. Anthemic and towering! A top stroke! According to Chris Jones, BBC’s music journalist at the time, the song (with its reference to the inhalant drug amyl nitrite), was “despite its punning title, a thrill-seeking slice of cynicism that perfectly summed up what
it was like to be young and chemically imbalanced in the nation’s capital at the time”
.

It was the third single from their stupendous, self-titled debut LP, and charted
at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. Here’s that fabulous beast…

Like his dad you know that he’s had
Animal nitrate in mind
Oh in your council home he jumped on your bones
now you’re taking it time after time

oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now your animal’s gone?

Well he said he’d show you his bed
and the delights of his chemical smile
so in your broken home he broke all of your bones
now you’re taking it time after time

oh it turns you on, on, on, now he has gone
oh what turns you on, on, on, now your animal’s gone?

what does it take to turn you on, on
now he has gone?
now you’re over 21?
now your animal’s gone?
animal, he was animal, an animal

The story of DAS MODEL by KRAFTWERK

The visionary song was first released in 1978 – 40 years ago – only in Germany, as
a 7″ single. Three 3 years later, in 1981, the English version came out as the B-side
on the ‘Computer Love‘ single. After English DJ’s started to play that B-side over and
over again the song was re-released in 1982 by record label EMI although the band opposed. It became the first No 1 hit for a German act in the UK on 6 February 1982.

Quick, get yourself a clean haircut.
Take that old red shirt out of the closet.
Steal your daughter’s red lipstick.
Look like a robot on strike and
pretend you’re a cool model…

[Verse 1]

‘Das Model’ was on THE MAN-MACHINE LP – released 19 May 1978, almost 40 years ago – and spelled in German up to the 2009 remaster when English title ‘The Model’ was used.

SHOT BY BOTH SIDES is an impressive jigsaw classic by MAGAZINE. Written by its frontman Howard Devoto and Buzzcocks’ mastermind Pete Shelley (they actually both formed pop punks Buzzcocks in 1976, Devoto left after a few months to start his own band). The song was inspired by Devoto‘s girlfriend who said to him after a political discussion: “Oh, you’ll end up shot by both sides” and has sonically nothing to do with punk whatsoever. It’s just a monumental, paranoid pushed up eruption released as a single on 20 January 1978, 40 years ago. Go frenzy here…

Artist: THE VERVE
Record: 5-track debut E.P.
Released: 7 December 1992 – 25 years ago…
NME wrote: “one of the few bands who still believe that the space between your ears is infinite, that nothing is impossible, that it’s all within our reach…they soar…This is no easy ride but it’s a hell of an adventure, a risk well worth taking…”
Notes: the E.P. features songs that never appeared on a studio LP. The EP’s 2 singles – ‘Gravity Grave’ and ‘She’s a Superstar‘ – reappeared on the compilation album This Is Music: The Singles 1992 – 1998. The record’s cover was taken in Ashcroft‘s flat in Wigan.
Score: the striking and spacey start of a tumultuous ride for a spectacular anthems band
fronted by charismatic singer/songwriter and – then – eccentric Richard Ashcroft.

THE STEVE MILLER BAND – Classic Slam Dunk ‘ROCK ‘N ME’ Numero Uno In The USA 40 Years Ago Today…

When timeless in sound and vision it’s a…

6 November 2017

STEVE MILLER and his BAND released masterpiece album FLY LIKE AN EAGLE back in 1976. The second single from the LP is to me and millions the track to go completely nuts to. ROCK ‘N ME is no less than a classic diamond that puts a giant smile on my face every, countless, time I hear it while yelling the lyrics out loud, word by word. Here’s what author Steve Miller revealed about what inspired him to write his top-notch rocker, back then: “elements of “Rock’n Me”, particularly the intro, was a tip of the hat to British group Free’s “All Right Now”. Yeah, it’s a tack on the wall for Paul (Kossoff). I did one concert in the 2 years that I was off the road. I went to London and played with Pink Floyd… it was a big, huge outdoor show so we needed a big rock and roll number that was really going to excite everybody. I just put it together and didn’t think much about it.” The banger hit the top spot of the US singles chart on 6 November 1976. Forty years ago today!…

Here’s a stunning and euphoric live rendition that gets the audience
and definitely, you too on your feet while going totally bonkers…

Well I’ve been lookin’ real hard and I’m tryin’ to find a job
But it just keeps gettin’ tougher every day
But I got to do my part ’cause I know in my heart
I got to please my sweet baby, yeah
Well, I ain’t superstitious, and I don’t get suspicious
But my woman is a friend of mine
And I know that it’s true that all the things that I do
Will come back to me in my sweet time

So keep on rock’n me baby
Keep on a rock’n me baby (x3)

I went from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could be with my sweet baby, yeah

Keep on a rock’n me baby ( x5)

Don’t get suspicious, now don’t be suspicious
Babe, you know you are a friend of mine
And you know that it’s true that all the things that I do
Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time
I went from Phoenix, Arizona all the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California where the girls are warm
So I could hear my sweet baby say

Keep on a rock’n me baby (x7)

THE VERVE Released Their Mother Of All Power Ballads ‘BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY’ 20 Years Ago…

When timeless in sound and vision…

‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ by THE VERVE

Twenty years ago – 16 June 1997 – THE VERVE released BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY,
their most famous song ever. An epic and timeless masterstroke. An imperishable
anthem with the lyrics written by charismatic frontman Richard Ashcroft. But as
the band sampled strings arrangements from the 1965 Andrew Oldham Orchestra symphonic recording of ‘The Last Time‘ (composed by a certain David Whitaker but
inspired by The Rolling Stones‘ song of the same title) 60s greedy Stones’ manager
Oldham and poor guys Jagger & Richards were added to the songwriting credits.
Whatever. It became The Verve’s biggest hit (No 2 on the UK singles chart). Here
we go, at the top of our lungs…

‘Cause it’s a bitter sweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
You’re a slave to money then you die
I’ll take you down the only road
I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,

No change, I can’t change
I can’t change, I can’t change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never pray
But tonight I’m on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds
that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine,
let it cleanse my mind,
I feel free now
But the airways are clean
and there’s nobody singing to me now

No change, I can’t change
I can’t change, I can’t change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no
I can’t change
I can’t change

‘Cause it’s a bitter sweet symphony, this life
Try to make ends meet
Try to find some money then you die
I’ll take you down the only road
I’ve ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the things meet yeah

You know I can’t change, I can’t change
I can change, I can change
But I’m here in my mold
I am here in my mold
And I’m a million different people
from one day to the next
I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

I can’t change my mold
No, no, no, no, no,
I can’t change
Change my
No, no, no, no, no

Its justs sex and violence melody and silence (x2)
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
It justs sex and violence melody and silence
I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down
Been down
Ever been down (x4)
Have you ever been down? (x3)
