Powerhouse Rockers BLACKTOP MOJO Cover Soul Legends THE TEMPTATIONS

20 April 2022

Sturdy Texan rockers BLACKTOP MOJO shared a surprising acoustic cover a couple of weeks ago, of timeless classic My Girl performed (written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, by Motown’s soul legends THE TEMPTATIONS in 1964.

Blacktop Mojo: “We love the original tune. Everyone grew up listening to it. There’s definitely something special about Motown and that era of music and there’s a reason why artists like the Temptations have stood the test of time. However when you’re having a bad day, or maybe having it out with your lady, and a song like “My Girl” comes on, while nine times out of ten it’ll cheer you up, sometimes you just don’t want to hear a happy love song. Sometimes you’re in the ‘Lonely Hearts Club’ instead, and that’s where our version comes in.”

The band have a live version of the song too. Although with much respect for
the original Blacktop Mojo color it with their own magical touch. Just great.

Matt James: ”We wanted to play the song live in a place where you could really feel the dilapidation of a broken heart. We snuck into this old church here in Palestine and the natural reverb in the room was incredible. The cracked stained glass and paint peeling from the walls of a place that was once so magnificent was definitely reminiscent of a love that had been lost.”

SHARON VAN ETTEN Is A STARMAN For 70 Seconds

11 April 2022

Beaut songstress SHARON VAN ETTEN just announced her 6th full-length WE’VE BEEN GOING ABOUT THIS ALL WRONG, out on 6 May. In the weeks before she shared two
new songs that will, weirdly, not be on that album.

And this 70 seconds of covering David Bowie‘s STARMAN (which came out 50 years ago)
won’t be on it either. It’s actually the end-credits song for the new Netflix documentary Return To Space about Eton Musk and his obsession for space missions.

Only 70 seconds, but quite special ones…

By Fans Demand – FERAL FIVE Get It On!

29 January 2022

London’s electronic duo FERAL FIVE pay
homage to the late great glam rock icon
MARC BOLAN and T.REX with their new
cover of the classic GET IT ON.

FF: “Featuring both Ferals on vocals, this stomping version saw a fans-only sneak
peek to celebrate finishing their album. They soon had requests for a full release,
which the band dutifully obliged. Talk about ‘Bang A Gong’, this track has dirty synths,
floating fuzz guitar, heavy bass and beats (including cymbals and gongs of course).
Crank up the generator and set your speakers to overload, this song is more than
electric, it’s a mesmeric fully Feralised electronic smash!

The duo’s version is a repetitive banging gong going on and on.
Glam and glitter electro for the dancefloor lit by a rotating, shiny
disco ball.

Let’s dance, take a chance, understand me
You’re dirty, sweet and you’re my girl…

Dublin Act REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER Just Released A ‘TELEVISION PERSONALITIES’ Cover

13 January 2022

Artist: REVOLUTION ABOVE DISORDER
Who: Vancouver-based Dubliner Stephen Nicholas White.
A post-punk/nugaze/electro artist.

FFO: Creation Records, Factory Records, Ride, The Verve,
Death In Vegas, Beak, The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Cover: SCREAM QUIETLY

The original is by London’s post-punk cult band Television Personalities
who, led by Dan Treacy, followed their own wayward vision of psychedelia.
The track dates from 1982. And the band is still going strong.

Turn Up The Volume: Stephen Nicholas White turns the original Kraut-rock
drone into a romanticizing Kraut-pop trip. The ongoing circling guitar riff, the
repetitious flow, and the featherlight vocals on top of it have a hypnotic effect
and sneak under your skin quietly but determinately.

“Love’s a thousand things
Everyone a precious thing
Love’s a thousand dreams
Everyone a mystery”

Dream quietly here…
