TOYAH & ROBERT FRIPP – Legendary Spouses Go Underground For BLACK SABBATH’s Stroke Of Genius ‘PARANOID’

On a seventh day – 5 years ago – musical celebs TOYAH WILLCOX and her
husband ROBERT FRIPP their Sunday Lunch Sessions as a fun pastime during
Covid‘s lockdown, covering classics of big name artists. First they did some in
their garden, in their cellar and then they moved to their by now legendary
kitchen.

After Fripp suffered a heart attack last May they paused their weekly performance
for a couple of months. It was really weird no to see them going bonkers on Sundays
for a while. Of course, the King Crimson illustrious guitar expert’s health was top priority. He returned in August ready to rock again.

Yesterday they revisited their performance of Black Sabbath‘s
monstrous classic Paranoid (more than 1,4 billion stream on
Spotify.

For this occasion they went underground again, with Toyah going nuts behind bars and tattooed Fripp turning Paranoid into a freakish cellar rock jaw-dropper. Halloween is just around the corner, folks.

Indestructible stroke of genius.

THURSTON MOORE Covers ‘TEMPTATION INSIDE YOUR HEART’ From THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

Former Sonic Youth top dog is a busy man.

Last year THURSTON MOORE (now aged 67) released his 9th solo album,
named Flow Critical Lucidity. Earlier this year, he dropped one-off single
The Serpentine and teamed up with grindcore gang Napalm Death for
a cover of Ramones’ Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue.

And now he treats us with a cover of
a song by The Velvet Underground.

Not a really famous one. TEMPTATION INSIDE YOUR HEART
dates back from 1968, but did come out much later, on a VU
compilation from 1985.

It’s a fooling around, riff-rotating VU ripper
spiced with Lou Reed‘s characteristic vocality.

SUEDE Cover BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN’s Classic ‘HUNGRY HEART’ With Glammy Glow

As all fans already know for weeks, London‘s glam pop-rock biggies SUEDE release their 10th longplayer, named Antidepressants on September 5th. They treated us with three singles, so far, which you can stream below.

It’s promo time, of course. They appeared recently on BBC’s Radio 2 Sofa Sessions
Show with Jo Whiley and besides performing some new songs, they did a cover of
Bruce Springsteen‘s grand 1980 hit Hungry Heart (almost 290 million streams
on Spotify) from his ‘The River’ LP.

INTERPOL Maestro PAUL BANKS Covers IGGY POP

INTERPOL voice/face has scored the soundtrack for black comedy
movie SISTER MIDNIGHT which premiered in Cannes last year.

He included two covers of Iggy Pop songs. Sister Midnight
from his 1977 album The Idiot and The Stooges‘ Gimme Danger
from their 1973 LP Raw Power.

Banks: “‘Gimme Danger’ is one of my favorite Stooges songs, and ‘Sister Midnight’ I was less familiar with, but it is the titular track of a film that is feral with Stoogian grit and joy, so I was equally excited to immerse myself in it, and find an interpretation that felt authentic to my voice‘

NELSON SOBRAL – Canadian Artist Delivers Soulful Cover Of CINDY LAUPER’S 1983 Classic ‘TIME AFTER TIME’

Who: Singer-songwriter-guitarist hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, equally inspired
by the vast, wide open spaces of the country he calls home and the labyrinthine maze of the city in which he resides. Sobral’s music is as much Americana and blues as it is soul and rock’n’roll, perfectly balanced with the energy and sound of each of his respective influences.

Sobral‘s cover of Cyndi Lauper‘s (now 71) supreme 1984 classic Time After Time (more than 1 billion streams on Spotify) is a soulful and enticing accomplishment. A gripping vocal performance, bringing the emotive timbre of the sublime voices of Springsteen and Seger to mind.

On this very day – June 9 – in 1984, Lauper started a two-week
No. 1 run on the US Singles Charts with Time After Time.

Sobral: “I play a lot of cover gigs, part of the job. Some songs I play straight. Others, I bend until they feel like they came outta me. Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Time After Time” is one of those. It started out as just another tune in the set. But night after night, it kept landing differently. Somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like a cover and started feeling like mine, like something I might’ve written. It’s about taking an already powerful song and saying it in my
own voice.”

TOYAH & ROBERT Search And Destroy THE STOOGES In Their Kitchen

British pop legend TOYAH WILLCOX and her beloved partner and King Crimson
guitar wizard ROBERT FRIPP are still in the kitchen at parties, for almost 4 years
now. Their weekly Sunday Lunch Cover Sessions started back in April to kill time
in that awful Covid-19 lockdown year.

What they have done since is make us laugh to tears with their both hilarious and
utterly cool performances. They already covered tons of classic songs by classic artists/bands and there is no way of stopping them. Yes, it only takes two to tango.

Yesterday they slashed and trashed The Stooges classic Search And Destroy.

Watch Fripp‘s eyes rollin’ again from left to right and back
when seeing his colorful punk wife going berserk.

DAVID BYRNE Covers PARAMORE And Vice Versa

Last February a tribute album, titled Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute
To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense was announced featuring BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, the Cavemen, Chicano Batman feat. Money Mark, DJ Tunez, El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, girl in red, Jean Dawson, Kevin Abstract, the Linda Lindas, Lorde, Miley Cyrus,
the National, Teezo Touchdown, and Toro y Moi.

PARAMORE are also part of the cast and perform a spry version of
Burning Down The House from the 1983 longplayer Speaking In
Tongues.

Smitty: “I have wanted to cover this David Bowie song for quite some time. Long before he passed away in 2016. We did a version of ‘Panic in Detroit’ for our debut live performance at ONCE in Somerville. We did it again in Detroit at The Detroit All-Star Garage Rock Punk Revue III. The song killed. But I wanted to do a different Bowie song for our performance at the Jamaica Plain Music Festival in 2019. This version of ‘Rebel Rebel’ is ostensibly the version we played live for that event. It came off wonderfully. I knew then and there, I wanted to record it.”

Looks like these madcap rebels have the time of their lives.
As Bowie would say Let’s Dance.
